Christian Art Vs Greek Art Essay
Compare/Contrast of Ancient Greek art and late Antiquity art
While most art styles differ in many ways there are no two art forms, in my opinion, that differ and contrast each other as much as Greek and early
Christian art seem to. And so, today we will be comparing but mostly contrasting these two art forms from each other.
Greek Art is based most on worldly situations, this is because the Greeks viewed man as the measure of all things, and they spent most of their time
trying to create the "perfect" specimen of humanity. The Greeks strive for perfection resulted in them making very realistic art pieces such as statues;
these statues were almost always of young men at their prime and were called kouros. The attention to detail that the Greeks had, along with the muscle
definition and the expressions the statues often possessed, the archaic smile in the archaic period that represented being alive and the emphasis the
people of the Hellenistic period had with draping and non–geometric, "wet" garments for women, resulted in Greek art becoming one of the most
realistic but also idealized...show more content...
This form of art is based on a canon that was created in the Late Empire period of the Roman Empire, for a sculpture called the tetrarchs, which shows
four people, two ceasers and two agustie, with short and stocky bodies, big heads, hands and feet, slim shoulders, and expressionless faces. Christian
art is largely portrayals of Christ as a young and carefree Sheppard, because of how hard life was for the Christians at that time. It was very idealistic
and did not have accurate portrayals of the human body, in what is assumed to be the Christians attempts to distance themselves from anything that
resembled the Greeks and romans. Christian art was also mostly done for inside churches, and was not for

Comparing Two Works Of Art Essay
Comparing two works of art
For my final project, I will compare two pieces of art and show the comparisons and differences that they have in the Greek ancient period and the
modern period of the same theme "the representation of the Trojan war". The visual work art is a bilingual art because it was made with the
participation of two artists, Andokides (Red figure) and the Lysippides (Black figure) and it is titled "Achilles and Ajax Playing a Dice a Game". It was
painted in 525–520 B.C in Greece and it represents the ancient Greece. The literary artwork I will consider is The Iliad, an epic poem by the ancient
Greek poet Homer in 750 BCE. I will compare both artworks and connect them to the contemporary period debating the similarities and differences
that the poem and the ceramic have and how they influenced our modern world, which help the creation of the film Troy led by Brad Pitt, Eric Bana
and Orlando Bloom in 2004.
The bilingual amphora was painted in Athens, Greece during the ancient Greek period in a black figure and red figure style. This was a typical style
in Athens, Greece at that time and it was mainly to decorate fine pottery. Most of the amphoras were made in sections initially (neck and body) and
were put together afterwards (the foot and handles). This pottery was not for everyday use, but it was affordable for most of the population. This fine
Greek pottery goes back to the Minoan and Mycenaean pottery of the Bronze Age. The black figure technique focused

Comparing Paintings by Pablo Picasso and Alberto Morrocco
I have decided to contrast and compare paintings by cubist artist
Pablo Picasso and contemporary artist Alberto Morrocco.
I have studied their paintings to find out their influences and any similarities between their work. I have tried to find a source of their motivation and
reason for their interpretations.
Firstly, I am going to write about cubist artist, Pablo Picasso.
Inspired by artist Paul Cezanne, the father of analytical cubism,
Picasso attempted many styles of work. He experimented with different media and use of colour, throughout his artistic career. Hispaintings reflected
his moods and attitudes, which changed several times during the course of his...show more content...
The most obvious comparison is both artists' choice of colour. Morrocco has deliberately repeated Picasso's use of 'blue' and injected it into his
'Siesta', to continue the idea of a solemn, cold atmosphere. A justifiable difference is Morrocco's over–use of simple shape. He transforms items from
their natural state, simplifying and exaggerating them until his results are almost child–like. This bears little resemblance to the human figures in
Picasso's 'The Tragedy' which are well detailed and realistically perceived.
When I look at 'The Tragedy' I feel overwhelmed in sadness and feel a sense of sympathy for Picasso and the family in his painting. I feel as
though I am made a part of his painting as I can relate to how he is feeling after losing a loved one. Therefore I conclude that this painting was
produced after Picasso experienced how it felt to have that love taken from him, a love that would be lost forever. I believe that is why he chose to
show through an imaginative family, the emotional consequences of love ceasing to exist.
The 'Siesta' is less atmospheric and doesn't make me feel any emotional sadness towards the family featured in the painting, partly due to the title and
the presence of the sunflower, which, in my opinion, are symbolic of some source of happiness. The wedding ring represents love, thus making me

Everyone has been created unique and there is no other that is the like anyone else. People think different, dress different and like and dislike certain
things. This is similar to the artists of the nineteenth century including Pierre Etienne Theodore Rousseau and Joseph Mallord William Turner. They
are both artists during the nineteenth century and were painted at the same time; however, there is a difference between their styles, their point of
view, and the scenery. However there are similarities between the two paintings. The paintings that will be compared and contrasted are "Under the
Birches, Evening" and "The Campo Santo, Venice." The first painting, "Under the Birches, Evening", is done by Pierre Etienne Theodore Rousseau. He

"Under"). One could mistake that the focal point is the little figure under the birch tree who is a priest. However, the main point in this landscape
is all about the birches. The reason why one could say so is because of all the visual elements such as: the birches are in the middle of the painting;
they are also the most lighted objects in the painting (light is shining in the form of an oval) (National Gallery). Due to the levels of lightning one
can see that the picture is divided into three horizontal parts: the top (dark, but not as dark as the bottom of the painting); the middle is the
lightest; and the bottom is the darkest. This means that he used what he learned about the Dutch style and mixed it with his personal style thus we
have a whole new way of seeing his point of view. The second painting, "The Campo Santo, Venice", was done by Joseph Mallord William Turner.
He was born in London on April 23, 1775. Turner was interested in painting water subjects as well as landscapes ("Biography for"). He was
educated at the Royal Academy of Arts where he developed his way of expressing natural light on the paintings, thus his style is seen as
impressionistic. It is said that his father has been selling Turner's paintings at his own shop from1 to 3 shillings which may have influenced his
decision to have the boy educated as a painter. Turner's artistic style best progress was during 1835–45. It is also a time during which he painted "The

Greek culture is the source from which many of the characteristic elements of Western culture derive. Their explorations and innovations in art have
both fascinated and inspired other civilizations for centuries. For this assignment I chose two Greek sculptures viewed at the Getty Museum. The first
is Kouros circa 530 B.C. made of Dolomitic marble from Thasos and is approximately 200 cm (80 in) in height. The second is Cult Statue of a
Goddess, (most likely Aphrodite) South Italy, 425– 400 B.C. made of Limestone and marble. It stands at a height of 220 cm (86 5/8 in). There is some
dispute to the authenticity of the Getty Kouros...show more content...
The overall all renditions are block–like and sculpted with geometric reduction of details. The anatomy is made up of planes, completely symmetrical.
The hair, ears, and eyes have been reduced to simple shapes В– again, all identically symmetrical. Kouros is depicted nude, symbolic of Archaic Greece
's emphasis on the ideal individual male and autonomous Greek citizen. In contrast, Aphrodite is a considerably large female (7 feet tall and
substantially wider than the Kouros). Given the larger than real–life scale, this statue probably served as a cult image in a temple. The statue's excellent
state of conservation also suggests that it was kept indoors. It is free standing but also in an anatomical, not just mechanical sense. The pose is full
and rounded, not solely frontal. You get a sense of the body being relaxed, with one hand extended in a gesture that gives a sense of it moving forward.
One foot is also forward with Aphrodite but with the pelvis at an angle to the ground plane creating the position known as contrapposto, the position of
a human figure in painting or sculpture in which the hips and legs are turned in a different direction from that of the shoulders and head; the twisting of
a figure on its own vertical axis. Additionally, no geometric reduction and arrangement of separate parts occurs with Aphrodite. You have a complete

Comparing Two Sculptors Essay
This essay will compare and contrast the work of two sculptors who use the human form as a basis of their artwork. The first sculpture "Apollo and
Daphne" by Gian Lorenzo Bernini was created in 1622 and portrays a Romanian story. Where as "Two Women" by Ron Mueck is a hyper realistic
sculpture made by an Australian contemporary artist.
Gian Lorenzo Bernini was a traditional sculptor that was born in 1598 and created art pieces such as "Apollo and Daphne" for well–known churches in
Rome. On the other hand, Ron Mueck is a contemporary sculptor from Australia who is known to use hyper–realism when creating magnificent
sculptures of the human form.

By using mixed materials such as silicon, fabric and plastic Ron Mueck to created the diminutive and brilliantly realistic sculpture of two elderly
women. Ron Mueck dresses and threads each hair into the heads of the sculpture, which further the uncanny realistic look of his artwork.
The sculptures "Apollo and Daphne" and "Two Women" share elements and principles with one another, such as shape, size and texture. Bernini's
work is a life size piece that complements the figure of the two characters. The facial expressions, hands, feet and hair of "Apollo and Daphne" are in
reasonable detail; however there are no lines on the bodies to create depth and texture. On the other hand, Mueck challenge's the viewer by changing
the scale of his work, with "Two Women" minute and in incredible proportion with the features and figure of the women.
While Gian Lorenzo Bernini's sculpture "Apollo and Daphne" depicts a Romanian story of forbidden love, Ron Mueck's "Two Women" portray two
elderly women hyper–realistically. By analysing the meaning behind the two sculptures, evidence is given that the two artists had different intentions
for their work. The story "Apollo and Daphne" is from a roman poem named "Metamorphoses" by a man named Ovid. In the story, Apollo is hit by a

Compare and Contrast works of art that represent the 15th Century Early Renaissance art and 16th Century Northern European art. The artists
Masaccio and Grunewald will be used to illustrate the differences and similarities in the styles of art. Their works of art are chosen for their
interpretation of the style that was representative during these eras. Early Renaissance artists used mathematical one–point linear perspective to create
illusions of depth and depicted the human body as realistic and natural. Northern European artist used medieval mysticism and intense emotional
spirituality and they used illustrative human figures rather than realistic depictions. By understanding the corresponding and distinctions between these
two works of art we can understand why they created their artwork in the respective style to their era.
The first work of art is a fresco titled "Trinity with the Virgin Mary, John the Evangelist, and the Donors" (Holy Trinity) by artist Masaccio during the
Early Renaissance c. 1425–
1427/1428. The fresco is located on the wall of the Church of Santa Maria Novella in Florence,
Italy. Brunelleschi's experiments on linear perspective and architecture had an influence on
Masaccio's art.
The second work of art is an oil painting on wood panel titled "Isenheim Altarpiece" by artist Grunewald in c. 1510–1515. It was located in the chapel
of the St. Anthony abbey hospital near Colmar, Germany. The hospital treated patients with

The Art of War, The Art of War was the most important and most famous military treatise in Asia for the last two and half thousand years created in
ancient China by Sun Tzu. Sun Tzu was born around 722–481 BC during the Eastern Zhou Dynasty became Chinese military general/philosopher.
Whereas there is agreement as to when Sun Tzu was born, there are contradictory orientations as to where he was born. An ancient Shiji text chronicles
that master Tzu was born in the state of Wu. This however, is contested by the Spring and Autumn Archives which document that he was born in the
state of Qi. The one thing that is clear though, is that he served under the king of Wu, King HelГј, as a military strategist and general in the late sixth
century BC, around 512...show more content...
The Art of Warwas written in part due to military conquests he had achieved early on in his career. Later observed as the most well–known and
celebrated of "China's Seven Military Classics." The Shiji record asserts that Sun demonstrated his models on the battlefield; a well–recognized
example of his strategy was Battle of Boju. Sun Tzu efficaciously out contrived the much larger Chu militaries ultimately defeating them. The Art of
War was one of the most widely read military texts in the Warring States Period (475–221 BC). In his book, he outlined the key components to
absolute victory in warfare by defeating the enemy using their weaknesses against them and minimizing one's causalities; decisively maximizing
resources; but can it be used against the war on terror? The Art of War is one of the most powerful literary guidelines detailing how a true leader
should wage war. Sun Tzu's knowledge is still thought of as useful in the modern times. However, his advice shouldn't be adopted and followed as the
only means to the end. But it is good guideline for any leader to follow in order to be effective in the

After reading over chapters fifteen through twenty they describe when and where art was used the most. Art was used in many cultures in different
time periods as the years, centuries pasted art became more advances and more complex. People used what they could find to make something out of it.
I learned that the earliest form of art began in Africa approximately two million years ago. It was interesting to find out that the work of art was an
engraved ochre that had lines as if it was crossed hatches (Page 241). I also found out that other pieces of art were discovered from cave paintings to
human like figurines either carved or molded by clay. Egypt had similar views their art was many of humans most higher ranking. Later, Greece began
creating work of art that honored an individual's achievements that consisted of a life–sized, freestanding either nude male or clothed woman. Most of
their art involved classical art which meant it restrained emotion (256–257). Then along came the Romans which their art was tied into architecture and
the engineering. They created structure such as, The Colosseum and Pantheon these structures both had similar things they had arches and columns

Art is an incredible medium when used to its fullest potential. What I mean by that is; it has the capabilities to surround the viewer with its imagery
and play with the emotions. Paintings are particulary effective in doing this through the use of color tones and 'temperature'. For example; El Greco
used a lot of blue and green throughout his body of work. The outcome is that the subject matter comes off as ghostly and perhaps a little alien. This is
in high contrast to Georgia O'Keeffe's desert paintings, which utilise reds, yellows, and browns to create a 'warm' and appealing landscape.
Of course, these are not the only artist to make master works of tonality. Here are five artists (which you may recognize) who have harnesed the power

Both Velazquez's 'Old Woman' and Rembrandt's 'Prodigal Son' are bathed in (or painted in) golden yellow tones. While both are wearing clothes of
differing colors, each pigment is mixed with a little yellow, white, or light brown to give warmth to the figure. This helps them to contrast to the very
dark background. I like how Rembrandt has figures in the background that are almost indiscernable. By being part of the opposing (darker) tonal
group, we as viewers are shown that they are not the most important part of the portrait; that the son and father are. Velazquez, however, chooses to
have all elements of interest in the lighter tones in his painting, leaving the back as a dark void of mystery.
Van Gogh is probably one of the most interesting painters concerning tonality. His purposeful usage of onecolor in a body of work is a strong reference
to emotion (particularly in his portraits). His expressive brush work swirls the blues, and slight yellow and green, around his face. Even his skin has a
bluish hue. These elements describe a somber or sorrowful state of mind. Its as almost if the troubles around him are seeping into his skin (like the blue).
That being said, tonality is both the friend of the artist and the art–lover. It is a wonderful story

ancient Greek styles were duplicated by the Romans and modified to suit their needs. We can still see a lot of Greek and Roman influences in the
present day, especially in the architectural world. Below I will cite some examples of Greek and Roman pieces of art and a structure from each

Upon looking at each structure you would immediately notice the use of columns. Albeit the Parthenon's main weight–bearing elements are the
columns whereas the columns used on the Pantheon are more aesthetic than functional. Each of these structures also makes use of a portico that
originated in the Greek culture. Both structures are immense places of worship to the gods. The Parthenon was created for the goddess Athena but
over the centuries it changed through a series of hands finally ending up as an ammunition dump for the Turks during a seventeenth century war with
the Venetians. The Venetians bombed the building leaving most of it in ruins. The Pantheon was created as a house for sculptures of Roman gods.
Enough care was taken throughout the centuries that this structure is still being used for religious functions today. The Parthenon was a more
simplistic and ancient looking design where the Pantheon took on a whole new era. The dome came into play along with the many ornamental features
seen on the inside as well as the outside of the Pantheon. The interior contains marble slabs and granite columns. These are accentuated when the sun
shifts locations through the oculus in the center of the dome. These features reaffirm the fact that the Greek culture was to the point as far as balance
of mind and body. They created their work meticulously but didn't overdo it. Their buildings were functional

Compare and contrast the subject, concept, and the Formal Element of the two works of art. Also, explain which category this work falls in. The two

Also, the shapes in the background are fuzzier and assumed in piece one where the shapes in piece two are sharper and more defined. Another formal
element is texture. The first piece, according to the text, is a floor mosaic which is composed of many colored tesserae that were laid down in
irregular, curving lines, which effectively imitated painted brushstrokes. The individual tiles are more apparent when viewed closely. This gives the
piece a grainy and earthy texture, where it physically looks bumpy. The textbook says it has foreshortening, the illusion created on a flat surface in
which figures and objects appear to recede or project sharply into space. The second piece was drawn with tempera on parchment. This makes the
piece look smooth, flat, and two dimensional. The next element is color. The hues in both pieces are relatively earth toned. Both pieces have a low

rocky scenery has browns and creams with a dull green and brown center. A bright green patch of pine trees is in the corner that contrasts with the

The Classical and Renaissance periods of art are both extremely interesting but of the two, the renaissance period captured my attention. The work of
Michelangelo Buonarroti in particular, is fascinating to say the least. If given the opportunity to cover any period, that period would be the
Renaissance period and the chosen artist to be interviewed would surely be Michelangelo Buonarroti. Renaissance, which translates from French to
mean 'rebirth', is seen as a revival of the style of art from the classical period with the focus on form returning to art, added with the new technologies
of this era creating pieces that were expressive and depicted human relations. Many of the works from the renaissance period depicted religious images

One feature of the Sistine Chapel is that the ceiling is undeniably high. This means that Michelangelo and his assistants would have painstakingly
painted each fresco, going through great pains to ensure that the challenge of the height of the ceiling does not compromise the detail and structure of
the paintings. Lastly, I would ask him his true feelings about the paintings after completion. Was it one of relief? Was it one of pride? It is apparent
that Michelangelo took the challenge of the Sistine Chapel with arms wide open, however, as it is widely believed that Michelangelo had become
frustrated after roughly four years of working on the Sistine Chapel, and it would be interesting to know whether he felt that the frescoes were worth
the physical and mental toll that they had taken on his body during that four year

comprised of painting, sculpture and architecture. Baroque art was known to reflect more on the religious tension of the time. Most of the artists
reflected more on the desires of the Catholic Church in Rome, where the Roman Catholic was trying to affirm itself in the wake of the Protestants
reformation. Most of the Baroque paintings were aimed at exhorting the divine majesty of the church, but the primary purpose of most of these
paintings was to strengthen kingdoms' reign under the religious influence like Spain and France. The Catholic Church dominated these two nations.
Most of the paintings which were created that time period tried to compare both Catholic and the Protestants religions. The primary aim was to
show how Protestants had less religious content when compared to the Catholic religion. Most the Baroque paintings were intended to persuade
people not to be an apostate. However, most of the Baroque paintings were designed to affect the public. Catholic inspired a Baroque art that was
done on a large scale. Most of the places where these paintings were found were churches and palaces. Artists of Baroque art were known to portray
a sense of movement by their work, by the means of swirling spirals and upward diagonals. They made good use of extravagant color schemes, and
this was aimed at dazzling as they surprised the targeted audience. As time went on, there were some people who started criticizing Baroque art

Christian Art Vs Greek Art Essay

  • 1. Christian Art Vs Greek Art Essay Compare/Contrast of Ancient Greek art and late Antiquity art While most art styles differ in many ways there are no two art forms, in my opinion, that differ and contrast each other as much as Greek and early Christian art seem to. And so, today we will be comparing but mostly contrasting these two art forms from each other. Greek Art is based most on worldly situations, this is because the Greeks viewed man as the measure of all things, and they spent most of their time trying to create the "perfect" specimen of humanity. The Greeks strive for perfection resulted in them making very realistic art pieces such as statues; these statues were almost always of young men at their prime and were called kouros. The attention to detail that the Greeks had, along with the muscle definition and the expressions the statues often possessed, the archaic smile in the archaic period that represented being alive and the emphasis the people of the Hellenistic period had with draping and non–geometric, "wet" garments for women, resulted in Greek art becoming one of the most realistic but also idealized...show more content... This form of art is based on a canon that was created in the Late Empire period of the Roman Empire, for a sculpture called the tetrarchs, which shows four people, two ceasers and two agustie, with short and stocky bodies, big heads, hands and feet, slim shoulders, and expressionless faces. Christian art is largely portrayals of Christ as a young and carefree Sheppard, because of how hard life was for the Christians at that time. It was very idealistic and did not have accurate portrayals of the human body, in what is assumed to be the Christians attempts to distance themselves from anything that resembled the Greeks and romans. Christian art was also mostly done for inside churches, and was not for Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Comparing Two Works Of Art Essay Comparing two works of art For my final project, I will compare two pieces of art and show the comparisons and differences that they have in the Greek ancient period and the modern period of the same theme "the representation of the Trojan war". The visual work art is a bilingual art because it was made with the participation of two artists, Andokides (Red figure) and the Lysippides (Black figure) and it is titled "Achilles and Ajax Playing a Dice a Game". It was painted in 525–520 B.C in Greece and it represents the ancient Greece. The literary artwork I will consider is The Iliad, an epic poem by the ancient Greek poet Homer in 750 BCE. I will compare both artworks and connect them to the contemporary period debating the similarities and differences that the poem and the ceramic have and how they influenced our modern world, which help the creation of the film Troy led by Brad Pitt, Eric Bana and Orlando Bloom in 2004. The bilingual amphora was painted in Athens, Greece during the ancient Greek period in a black figure and red figure style. This was a typical style in Athens, Greece at that time and it was mainly to decorate fine pottery. Most of the amphoras were made in sections initially (neck and body) and were put together afterwards (the foot and handles). This pottery was not for everyday use, but it was affordable for most of the population. This fine Greek pottery goes back to the Minoan and Mycenaean pottery of the Bronze Age. The black figure technique focused Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Comparing Paintings by Pablo Picasso and Alberto Morrocco I have decided to contrast and compare paintings by cubist artist Pablo Picasso and contemporary artist Alberto Morrocco. I have studied their paintings to find out their influences and any similarities between their work. I have tried to find a source of their motivation and reason for their interpretations. Firstly, I am going to write about cubist artist, Pablo Picasso. Inspired by artist Paul Cezanne, the father of analytical cubism, Picasso attempted many styles of work. He experimented with different media and use of colour, throughout his artistic career. Hispaintings reflected his moods and attitudes, which changed several times during the course of his...show more content... The most obvious comparison is both artists' choice of colour. Morrocco has deliberately repeated Picasso's use of 'blue' and injected it into his 'Siesta', to continue the idea of a solemn, cold atmosphere. A justifiable difference is Morrocco's over–use of simple shape. He transforms items from their natural state, simplifying and exaggerating them until his results are almost child–like. This bears little resemblance to the human figures in Picasso's 'The Tragedy' which are well detailed and realistically perceived. When I look at 'The Tragedy' I feel overwhelmed in sadness and feel a sense of sympathy for Picasso and the family in his painting. I feel as though I am made a part of his painting as I can relate to how he is feeling after losing a loved one. Therefore I conclude that this painting was produced after Picasso experienced how it felt to have that love taken from him, a love that would be lost forever. I believe that is why he chose to show through an imaginative family, the emotional consequences of love ceasing to exist. The 'Siesta' is less atmospheric and doesn't make me feel any emotional sadness towards the family featured in the painting, partly due to the title and the presence of the sunflower, which, in my opinion, are symbolic of some source of happiness. The wedding ring represents love, thus making me Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Everyone has been created unique and there is no other that is the like anyone else. People think different, dress different and like and dislike certain things. This is similar to the artists of the nineteenth century including Pierre Etienne Theodore Rousseau and Joseph Mallord William Turner. They are both artists during the nineteenth century and were painted at the same time; however, there is a difference between their styles, their point of view, and the scenery. However there are similarities between the two paintings. The paintings that will be compared and contrasted are "Under the Birches, Evening" and "The Campo Santo, Venice." The first painting, "Under the Birches, Evening", is done by Pierre Etienne Theodore Rousseau. He ...show more content... "Under"). One could mistake that the focal point is the little figure under the birch tree who is a priest. However, the main point in this landscape is all about the birches. The reason why one could say so is because of all the visual elements such as: the birches are in the middle of the painting; they are also the most lighted objects in the painting (light is shining in the form of an oval) (National Gallery). Due to the levels of lightning one can see that the picture is divided into three horizontal parts: the top (dark, but not as dark as the bottom of the painting); the middle is the lightest; and the bottom is the darkest. This means that he used what he learned about the Dutch style and mixed it with his personal style thus we have a whole new way of seeing his point of view. The second painting, "The Campo Santo, Venice", was done by Joseph Mallord William Turner. He was born in London on April 23, 1775. Turner was interested in painting water subjects as well as landscapes ("Biography for"). He was educated at the Royal Academy of Arts where he developed his way of expressing natural light on the paintings, thus his style is seen as impressionistic. It is said that his father has been selling Turner's paintings at his own shop from1 to 3 shillings which may have influenced his decision to have the boy educated as a painter. Turner's artistic style best progress was during 1835–45. It is also a time during which he painted "The Campo Santo, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Compare And Contrast Two Works Of Art ARTW 101 В– Society and Visual Art University of Redlands Compare and Contrast Two Works Of Art Greek culture is the source from which many of the characteristic elements of Western culture derive. Their explorations and innovations in art have both fascinated and inspired other civilizations for centuries. For this assignment I chose two Greek sculptures viewed at the Getty Museum. The first is Kouros circa 530 B.C. made of Dolomitic marble from Thasos and is approximately 200 cm (80 in) in height. The second is Cult Statue of a Goddess, (most likely Aphrodite) South Italy, 425– 400 B.C. made of Limestone and marble. It stands at a height of 220 cm (86 5/8 in). There is some dispute to the authenticity of the Getty Kouros...show more content... The overall all renditions are block–like and sculpted with geometric reduction of details. The anatomy is made up of planes, completely symmetrical. The hair, ears, and eyes have been reduced to simple shapes В– again, all identically symmetrical. Kouros is depicted nude, symbolic of Archaic Greece 's emphasis on the ideal individual male and autonomous Greek citizen. In contrast, Aphrodite is a considerably large female (7 feet tall and substantially wider than the Kouros). Given the larger than real–life scale, this statue probably served as a cult image in a temple. The statue's excellent state of conservation also suggests that it was kept indoors. It is free standing but also in an anatomical, not just mechanical sense. The pose is full and rounded, not solely frontal. You get a sense of the body being relaxed, with one hand extended in a gesture that gives a sense of it moving forward. One foot is also forward with Aphrodite but with the pelvis at an angle to the ground plane creating the position known as contrapposto, the position of a human figure in painting or sculpture in which the hips and legs are turned in a different direction from that of the shoulders and head; the twisting of a figure on its own vertical axis. Additionally, no geometric reduction and arrangement of separate parts occurs with Aphrodite. You have a complete human face with each Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Comparing Two Sculptors Essay This essay will compare and contrast the work of two sculptors who use the human form as a basis of their artwork. The first sculpture "Apollo and Daphne" by Gian Lorenzo Bernini was created in 1622 and portrays a Romanian story. Where as "Two Women" by Ron Mueck is a hyper realistic sculpture made by an Australian contemporary artist. Gian Lorenzo Bernini was a traditional sculptor that was born in 1598 and created art pieces such as "Apollo and Daphne" for well–known churches in Rome. On the other hand, Ron Mueck is a contemporary sculptor from Australia who is known to use hyper–realism when creating magnificent sculptures of the human form. The media techniques and processes that each of the sculptors completed required large...show more content... By using mixed materials such as silicon, fabric and plastic Ron Mueck to created the diminutive and brilliantly realistic sculpture of two elderly women. Ron Mueck dresses and threads each hair into the heads of the sculpture, which further the uncanny realistic look of his artwork. The sculptures "Apollo and Daphne" and "Two Women" share elements and principles with one another, such as shape, size and texture. Bernini's work is a life size piece that complements the figure of the two characters. The facial expressions, hands, feet and hair of "Apollo and Daphne" are in reasonable detail; however there are no lines on the bodies to create depth and texture. On the other hand, Mueck challenge's the viewer by changing the scale of his work, with "Two Women" minute and in incredible proportion with the features and figure of the women. While Gian Lorenzo Bernini's sculpture "Apollo and Daphne" depicts a Romanian story of forbidden love, Ron Mueck's "Two Women" portray two elderly women hyper–realistically. By analysing the meaning behind the two sculptures, evidence is given that the two artists had different intentions for their work. The story "Apollo and Daphne" is from a roman poem named "Metamorphoses" by a man named Ovid. In the story, Apollo is hit by a magical arrow from a god of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Compare and Contrast Essay Compare and Contrast works of art that represent the 15th Century Early Renaissance art and 16th Century Northern European art. The artists Masaccio and Grunewald will be used to illustrate the differences and similarities in the styles of art. Their works of art are chosen for their interpretation of the style that was representative during these eras. Early Renaissance artists used mathematical one–point linear perspective to create illusions of depth and depicted the human body as realistic and natural. Northern European artist used medieval mysticism and intense emotional spirituality and they used illustrative human figures rather than realistic depictions. By understanding the corresponding and distinctions between these two works of art we can understand why they created their artwork in the respective style to their era. The first work of art is a fresco titled "Trinity with the Virgin Mary, John the Evangelist, and the Donors" (Holy Trinity) by artist Masaccio during the Early Renaissance c. 1425– 1427/1428. The fresco is located on the wall of the Church of Santa Maria Novella in Florence, Italy. Brunelleschi's experiments on linear perspective and architecture had an influence on Masaccio's art. The second work of art is an oil painting on wood panel titled "Isenheim Altarpiece" by artist Grunewald in c. 1510–1515. It was located in the chapel of the St. Anthony abbey hospital near Colmar, Germany. The hospital treated patients with Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 9. The Art of War, The Art of War was the most important and most famous military treatise in Asia for the last two and half thousand years created in ancient China by Sun Tzu. Sun Tzu was born around 722–481 BC during the Eastern Zhou Dynasty became Chinese military general/philosopher. Whereas there is agreement as to when Sun Tzu was born, there are contradictory orientations as to where he was born. An ancient Shiji text chronicles that master Tzu was born in the state of Wu. This however, is contested by the Spring and Autumn Archives which document that he was born in the state of Qi. The one thing that is clear though, is that he served under the king of Wu, King HelГј, as a military strategist and general in the late sixth century BC, around 512...show more content... The Art of Warwas written in part due to military conquests he had achieved early on in his career. Later observed as the most well–known and celebrated of "China's Seven Military Classics." The Shiji record asserts that Sun demonstrated his models on the battlefield; a well–recognized example of his strategy was Battle of Boju. Sun Tzu efficaciously out contrived the much larger Chu militaries ultimately defeating them. The Art of War was one of the most widely read military texts in the Warring States Period (475–221 BC). In his book, he outlined the key components to absolute victory in warfare by defeating the enemy using their weaknesses against them and minimizing one's causalities; decisively maximizing resources; but can it be used against the war on terror? The Art of War is one of the most powerful literary guidelines detailing how a true leader should wage war. Sun Tzu's knowledge is still thought of as useful in the modern times. However, his advice shouldn't be adopted and followed as the only means to the end. But it is good guideline for any leader to follow in order to be effective in the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Art Compare Contrast Essay After reading over chapters fifteen through twenty they describe when and where art was used the most. Art was used in many cultures in different time periods as the years, centuries pasted art became more advances and more complex. People used what they could find to make something out of it. I learned that the earliest form of art began in Africa approximately two million years ago. It was interesting to find out that the work of art was an engraved ochre that had lines as if it was crossed hatches (Page 241). Egypt had similar views their art was many of humans most higher ranking. Later, Greece began creating work of art that honored an individual's achievements that consisted of a life–sized, freestanding either nude male or clothed woman. • 11. Art Comparison Art is an incredible medium when used to its fullest potential. What I mean by that is; it has the capabilities to surround the viewer with its imagery and play with the emotions. Paintings are particulary effective in doing this through the use of color tones and 'temperature'. For example; El Greco used a lot of blue and green throughout his body of work. The outcome is that the subject matter comes off as ghostly and perhaps a little alien. This is in high contrast to Georgia O'Keeffe's desert paintings, which utilise reds, yellows, and browns to create a 'warm' and appealing landscape. Of course, these are not the only artist to make master works of tonality. Here are five artists (which you may recognize) who have harnesed the power ...show more content... Both Velazquez's 'Old Woman' and Rembrandt's 'Prodigal Son' are bathed in (or painted in) golden yellow tones. While both are wearing clothes of differing colors, each pigment is mixed with a little yellow, white, or light brown to give warmth to the figure. This helps them to contrast to the very dark background. I like how Rembrandt has figures in the background that are almost indiscernable. By being part of the opposing (darker) tonal group, we as viewers are shown that they are not the most important part of the portrait; that the son and father are. Velazquez, however, chooses to have all elements of interest in the lighter tones in his painting, leaving the back as a dark void of mystery. Van Gogh is probably one of the most interesting painters concerning tonality. His purposeful usage of onecolor in a body of work is a strong reference to emotion (particularly in his portraits). His expressive brush work swirls the blues, and slight yellow and green, around his face. Even his skin has a bluish hue. These elements describe a somber or sorrowful state of mind. Its as almost if the troubles around him are seeping into his skin (like the blue). That being said, tonality is both the friend of the artist and the art–lover. It is a wonderful story Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Compare And Contrast: The Starry Night Trent Arvin Art Appreciation 11 April 2017 Compare and Contrast: "The Starry Night" and "Number 1 1949" When you look at the two paintings; "The Starry Night" by Vincent Van Gogh, and "Number 1 1949" by Jackson Pollock; there are a few similarities about the meaning of the works of art. Their background and history are different. These paintings were created in two totally different eras and have different formal and technical aspects. Saying that, these works of art share no spiritual or moral value. Respectively these paintings have a great history and legacy. While both of these painters are today well regarded and remembered, during their time they both had achieved such status in vastly different ways. Therefore even though these two artists lived during the same time these two are nothing alike. With their unique take on the world and events around them they were able to shape how the average person thought about the world around them. • 15. Comparing Two Arts I chose two arts from Paul Cezanne's Mont, Sainte–Victoire and Raphael's Madonna of the Meadow. Both arts were very incredible and meaningful. Each art was showing the strong points of people, society, peach, and humanism. But I want to discuss between these arts. When I compared with both arts, I liked Madonna of the Meadow better than Mont, Sainte–Victoire. Because Raphael's art is giving you a clear point through his drawing. it has the clear shape, solid colors, specific lines, and value. In the other hand, Paul Cezanne's art was uncleaned. He used oil painting with the brush. some parts are exactly what it is but it seems he was boring. I felt he was just playing with any colors. In his art, the mountain is actual. • 16. Compare Contrast Greek and Roman Art Essay Compare Contrast Greek And Roman Art And Architecture Compare/Contrast Greek and Roman Art and Architecture Since the onset of Greek and Roman civilizations centuries ago we have seen the art and architectural worlds evolve into what we know them as today. In fact, many of the ancient Greek styles were duplicated by the Romans and modified to suit their needs. We can still see a lot of Greek and Roman influences in the present day, especially in the architectural world. Below I will cite some examples of Greek and Roman pieces of art and a structure from each culture and detail some similarities as well as some contrasting values. I'd like to begin by comparing some pieces of art. In The Fallen Warrior (Greece) and The Dying Gaul...show more content... Upon looking at each structure you would immediately notice the use of columns. Albeit the Parthenon's main weight–bearing elements are the columns whereas the columns used on the Pantheon are more aesthetic than functional. Each of these structures also makes use of a portico that originated in the Greek culture. Both structures are immense places of worship to the gods. The Parthenon was created for the goddess Athena but over the centuries it changed through a series of hands finally ending up as an ammunition dump for the Turks during a seventeenth century war with the Venetians. The Venetians bombed the building leaving most of it in ruins. The Pantheon was created as a house for sculptures of Roman gods. Enough care was taken throughout the centuries that this structure is still being used for religious functions today. The Parthenon was a more simplistic and ancient looking design where the Pantheon took on a whole new era. The dome came into play along with the many ornamental features seen on the inside as well as the outside of the Pantheon. The interior contains marble slabs and granite columns. These are accentuated when the sun shifts locations through the oculus in the center of the dome. These features reaffirm the fact that the Greek culture was to the point as far as balance of mind and body. They created their work meticulously but didn't overdo it. Their buildings were functional Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Compare and Contrast Two Works of Art Anthony Arteaga Art History Ancient World Homework Assignment #1 Compare and contrast the subject, concept, and the Formal Element of the two works of art. Also, explain which category this work falls in. The two pieces I have chosen can be found on page 200, figure 6–51, Battle of Centaurs and Wild Beasts from Hadrian's Villa and on page 434, figure 14–8, Battle of the Bird and Serpent. Not only did I choose these pieces for their beauty, but also because both works have similar yet different subjects, concepts, and formal elements. Both of these images have subject matter that is the same even though they're different. The subjects for the Battle of Centaurs and Wild Beasts from Hadrian's Villa are animals; centaurs (male and...show more content... Also, the shapes in the background are fuzzier and assumed in piece one where the shapes in piece two are sharper and more defined. Another formal element is texture. The first piece, according to the text, is a floor mosaic which is composed of many colored tesserae that were laid down in irregular, curving lines, which effectively imitated painted brushstrokes. The individual tiles are more apparent when viewed closely. This gives the piece a grainy and earthy texture, where it physically looks bumpy. The textbook says it has foreshortening, the illusion created on a flat surface in which figures and objects appear to recede or project sharply into space. The second piece was drawn with tempera on parchment. This makes the piece look smooth, flat, and two dimensional. The next element is color. The hues in both pieces are relatively earth toned. Both pieces have a low level of saturation. In piece one, the sky is mustard brown with a section of mint green that frames the boulder that the male centaur is holding. The rocky scenery has browns and creams with a dull green and brown center. A bright green patch of pine trees is in the corner that contrasts with the sky and rocks. The colors to the second piece are similar in the sense that it has low saturation. The colors are dull and warm. This piece utilizes reds and oranges, in the serpent, that the first piece does not. Student Name: Crystal Jagdeo Student ID: 00057022 Survey of Art History Assessment 1 Question (6) The Classical and Renaissance periods of art are both extremely interesting but of the two, the renaissance period captured my attention. The work of Michelangelo Buonarroti in particular, is fascinating to say the least. If given the opportunity to cover any period, that period would be the Renaissance period and the chosen artist to be interviewed would surely be Michelangelo Buonarroti. Renaissance, which translates from French to mean 'rebirth', is seen as a revival of the style of art from the classical period with the focus on form returning to art, added with the new technologies of this era creating pieces that were expressive and depicted human relations. Many of the works from the renaissance period depicted religious images that are now re–produced in many chapels as well as religious books. The renaissance period consisted of sculptures, literature, music,...show more content... One feature of the Sistine Chapel is that the ceiling is undeniably high. This means that Michelangelo and his assistants would have painstakingly painted each fresco, going through great pains to ensure that the challenge of the height of the ceiling does not compromise the detail and structure of the paintings. Lastly, I would ask him his true feelings about the paintings after completion. Was it one of relief? Was it one of pride? It is apparent that Michelangelo took the challenge of the Sistine Chapel with arms wide open, however, as it is widely believed that Michelangelo had become frustrated after roughly four years of working on the Sistine Chapel, and it would be interesting to know whether he felt that the frescoes were worth the physical and mental toll that they had taken on his body during that four year Get more content on HelpWriting.net
