Evil In Lord Of The Flies
Throughout history, philosophers have wondered what essentially drives people to do certain actions. It is not clear whether these actions occur
because humans are intrinsically good or bad. Nevertheless, the novel Lord of the Flies and several historical examples provide some insight into why
human beings may be fundamentally bad. To begin with, the death of Simon in Lord of the Flies illustrates innate human evil. Simon's death is
preceded by Jack's tribe singing a savage chant. They violently murder Simon, mistaking him as the beast. Children's instantaneous instincts drove them
to kill Simon. Engaging in an unplanned murder, these children effectively demonstrate that when they relinquish rationale which is a product of
civilization, impulses lead them to act savagely. What is also significant in this scene is that Ralph and Piggy, the two characters mainly portrayed as
being rational, join the cruel murder and even begin to express instinctive behavior from their inner self. It is irrational for any person and especially
children, to commit murder. Therefore,...show more content...
This scene specifically focuses on Roger's cruelty. What is different from Simon's death is that Roger intentionally pushed a boulder to kill Piggy.
Roger's hatred against Piggy is negatively exhibited in this way. This incident happens after Simon's death, and thus it shows that meanwhile the
driving force behind the murder changed from unintentional to intentional manner. Continued isolation from civilization facilitates acting just based on
one's will as there are no strict rules to follow in the island, ultimately leading to evil conduct like murder. If human beings are inherently good, then it
is not possible to explain why even young children keep murdering each other and act based on their impulses. As a result, the idea that humans are
fundamentally evil is plausible to explain the events of Lord of the

Lord Of The Flies Simon Monologue
Thank you all for being here today. We are gathered here today to remember Simon. He was such a good person! Sure, he was shy and quiet but he
was also kind, helpful, selfless, determined and caring. I remember the first day I met him. I saw a small weird looking group of boys, dressed in
black cloaks singing and walking along the beach. I thought it was so odd, then when they arrived at our part of the beach and he fainted, at first I
was a little worried but then when I heard Jack say "He's always throwing a faint," "He did in Gib.; and Addis; and at matins over the precentor." I
did not feel so sorry for him anymore, I thought he was just seeking attention. Now I want to tell you how Simon died, its a shame he had to die the
way he did... you see there was this feast, now we thought he was there too, eating and having a grand time with us but what we did not realize was
that he was the beast crawling from the forest. There was no beast that night, just him. Simon... He was stabbed and washed away in the tide....show

I remember one time when jack smacked my spectacles off and no one dared help me except for Simon, he picked them up for me. I wish I was
more grateful for the things he did for me, but at that moment jealousy had taken over me... I was jealous that no one picked on him but only on me,
even if they thought he was a little weird. Although we thought these things we all loved having him on the island even if we did not say

"What I mean is... maybe it's only us," (Golding, 89). Simon, the keeper of hope, was talking in the assembly, which was called to discuss the beast,
and explained that the boys might just be their own beast. Also, Simon is showing that the boys are all alone without any adults to tell them what to
do, so they had to figure out what to do by themselves. By saying this, the young boys had to find a way to create a new civilization with rules, jobs,
and a leader, which allowed room for conflicts to sneak in. The goal for the writing is so that the readers can understand that there are roles that are
taken so that civilizations can thrive and survive. William Golding, author of Lord of the Flies, explores several themes throughout the novel in order

I don't know why," (Golding, 82). In addition, the author of Lord of the Flies uses the theme that people abuse unearned power, which shows
people that there will always be a leader, and that leader will not care about the people he is ruling over. Ralph and Jack were just put into
leadership roles without doing much, and since then, many negative events had occurred. Those negative events had been caused by the
misconduct of power. "Jack held out his hand for the conch," (Golding, 35). Jack had wanted to be in power over Ralph, even though he had not
won the vote, so he kept trying to abuse the small amount of power that he did have. Jack was very power hungry and didn't care what precautions
he had to take in order to gain power. "And you shut up! Who are you, anyway? Sitting there telling people what to do," (Golding, 91). Jack had been
very upset with Ralph for trying to suggest different ideas than what he had wanted, and Jack felt that he was the better leader over Ralph. Thus, Jack
was using the power that he had to try and dominate over Ralph. Leaders arise in everything and some of them use their power to benefit

Simon as Silent Prophet of Lord Of The Flies
The role of the prophet changes with the society in which he lives. In Modern America, a prophet is a visionary, telling his people what they can
become; in Biblical times, a prophet was the voice of God, telling his people what they had to become to fulfill their covenant with God. In William
Golding's Lord of the Flies, though, the prophet told his people nothing; he realized what they had already become, and he dared not tell them because
he knew they would turn against him. Simon lived in knowledge and fear because his society denied the role of the prophet, and he did not fight it
because he wanted so much to be part of that society.
The basic premise of Lord of...show more content...
Simon, though he did not tell the other boys of his vision, was incapable of forgetting. He was the observant character, the quiet philosopher. He
was often alone, sometimes by his own choice, and he liked to wander into the peaceful jungle. He sincerely cared about the other boys, sometimes
helping the young ones to fetch fruit, yet "Simon turned away from them and went where the just perceptible path led him. Soon high jungle closed
in" (56). He loved solitude and yet felt loneliness; he was alien to the other boys. The boys did not think anyone would be stupid enough to go into
the jungle by night: "The assembly grinned at the thought of going out into the darkness. Then Simon stood up and Ralph looked at him in
astonishment" (85). Many of the boys even thought he was "batty" because he left the group to spend time alone. He did not fear the jungle, and he
did not fear the Beast. "'Maybe,' he said hesitantly, 'maybe there is a beast. . . . maybe it's only us'" (89).
The Beast takes many forms in the boys' imaginations; once, they saw a strange shape moving at the top of a mountain, and they were afraid that it
was the Beast. No one dared to go near it save Simon, who went alone to the mountaintop during one of his sojourns; he discovered that the Beast was
only a dead parachuter whose gear shifted in the wind. Ironically, the dead man was a soldier, a symbol of thesavagery that was the true Beast.
However, Simon's compassion

Lord Of The Flies Simon Character Analysis Essay
Lord of the Flies: William Golding In Lord of the Flies, Simon shows to be an important role in the story as he uncovers the mystery of the beastie.
He is seen to be shy and to himself but soon shows his full brain capability and what he can offer to the group but it goes unnoticed. His personality
is unique and shows much potential, as does mine. Both me and Simon are independent, sensitive, and introverted as this presents an idealistic
nature. Simon is one to resist the influence of those around him. He feels he is capable of making his own decisions and to keep in line with his
priorities. "... How everyone was going to work hard until the shelters were finished?... All day I've been working with Simon. No one else..."
(Golding 50)...show more content...
Me being an introvert as well, I can relate, where the absence of confidence has stuck. It seems to be really hard for me to openly share my
opinions and my assessments to most topics. "Simon turned away from them and went the just perceptible path led him... Holding his breath he
cocked a critical ear at the sounds of the island." (Golding 57) When wanting to be alone, Simon heads to a secret place to take in the silence.
When I get frustrated or need calming down, I too find a quiet safe place for me where I feel comfortable to let out all the negative energy. While
being in this mind set, there is a great deal of thinking and feeling happening. Throughout the book, Simon finds a deeper meaning to all things
around him and provides information upon the Lord of the Flies but is then ignored and unappreciated. "You shut up, young Simon! Why couldn't
you say there wasn't a beast?" (Golding 93) Simon desperately tries to tell them he doesn't think the beast is real but more as an imaginary figure of
their inner rage, but all he got in the end was being yelled at and disregarded by the group. With his theories, he uses his feelings to produce a
reasonable and opinionated judgement to the beastie. In my personality traits, I use feeling to make my decisions based on my emotions along with
Simon, going and doing whatever he wants based on what he feels like doing. "However, Simon thought of the beast, there rose before his inward

Character Essay of Simon
The appearance of Simon in the novel The Lord of the Flies is of great significance and is substantial for the development of the story because he made
lots of points in the story. First of all, it is important to state that he sent simple, yet deep messages throughout the novel, with morals behind them.
Religiously speaking, Simon can be identified as the Christ–figure in the story. Simon also had a very specific role in the novel in being the character
in contact with nature. Simon's significance in the story is obvious, and one way to deduce this is by identifying his messages.
Throughout the story, Simon gave a variety of advice that did not seem important at the moment, but turned out to be substantial as time went by. Simon

Beelzebub also tempted Simon and gave him a forecast of what would happen. Like Jesus, Simon knows he has to die to allow the tribe to subsist. The
facts that everybody was guilty, and that no one did anything to bring him back to life link him to Christ in a greater proportion. After Simon's death,
the tribe started to believe in him, especially Ralph, noticing Simon was right and he tried to tell them the truth about the Beast remembering that it
was inside all of them; similar to what occurred with Jesus and his apostles. An even more compelling similarity between Jesus and Simon is that
"Jesus then leads three of his disciples to a very high mountain, where he undergoes the Transfiguration from Jesus to the Christ figure, the true Son of
God. He then comes down from the mountain and begins his priestly ministry" (Racicot). Like Jesus, Simon goes out to the woods and meditates,
coming back with more clear answers and perspective of things. On one occasion, Simon went up to the mountain and talked with the Lord of the
Flies, having a similar situation to the one Jesus had when he was in the desert meditating. Simon's relation to religion is evident, and his role was even
clearer.
Simon had a specific mission in the novel: the opportunity to talk to the beast and receive answers, very similar to revelations. His role was to help the
boys notice what the Beast really was, and not

How Does Simon Change In Lord Of The Flies
Children are savages by nature, when no adults are around. One kid on the island truly doesn't have any savage in him. Simon is a Christ–like figure,
that continuously stays true to himself and his morals. Simon will not let anyone or anything get in the way of this. Simon is the prime example of a
superego. Simon stays true to his moral rules by, watching out for the boys and trying to keep civilization on the island. Simon gives food to Piggy,
when nobody else will, without hesitation. Simon helps to build shelters instead of killing because he knows in order to be civilized he will need to
have shelter and doesn't want to include himself in any killing. When the boys plan to kill Piggy, Simon doesn't even engage in their conversations.

Although all of the other boys on the island are turning into savages, Simon does not follow. The other boys are becoming savages because it is
instinct. Simon is not like the other boys, in this sense. Simon is a Christ–like figure, so he isn't able to become savage. This island is a very harsh
environment, so only the savage will be able to survive. The other boys are not always savage, as they have developed the savagery over time.
Simon isn't able to develop this and he isn't able to survive on the island, just as piggy. Due to this Simon will not be able to survive. The novel is
foreshadowing that Simon will not make it, as he has not turned savage "You'll get back to where you came from" (Golding 111). This quote implies
that other boys, such as Ralph, will get back and make it but Simon will not. William Golding, is showing that he believes everyone has some savage
in them. Golding believes that as people are put into bad situations, the savage starts to come out. He shows this in the boys, the boys are very
"normal" as they first arrive at the island, but the longer they stay the more savage they become. Simon isn't becoming savage no matter how long he
has been on the island because he is a Christ–like figure and the author wants to show that the boys become savage, but Christ would not. Golding is
showing that he thinks all people are inherently

In different stories people may be represented as a figure of Christ. They may do things similar to what Jesus or God would do constantly. In the
book, Lord of the Flies, there is a person who is represented as a Christ–figure. The person who fills this role is Simon. Simon is represented in Lord of
the Flies as a Christ–figure because his death is similar to Jesus' and communion, has imagery of being sent to heaven, and he is kind to everyone. In
this book, Simon's death was meant to be represented as Jesus' death and communion. This is shown by, Simon was betrayed and killed by his
friends. This is just like how Jesus was betrayed and killed by his followers. Also Simon was killed like a crucifixion shown by, ВЁAt once the crowd

Simon never had a problem helping anyone or making them happy. Simon was helping the littleuns when nobody else would,"...Simon found for
them the fruit they couldn't reach, pulled off the choicest from up the foliage..."(Golding 56). In this it shows how Simon was helping the
littleuns even though ever thought of them as weight on their backs. This could be compared to Jesus how he helps people like giving a blind
man vision again. Simon also saved a littleun when he was stuck in the circle but they made the group switch to attacking Simon. This is like
when Jesus was crucified and died for our sins. One more example is that he was the only one who helped Piggy, like get his glasses after Jack
knocked them off. Another thing Simon did was meditate to remain peaceful in between all the chaos around him. To add, he tried to warn them
that the beast was not real which could have kept the kids more peaceful and not scared of the beast. This is like Jesus because he tries to keep
peace in the world. As shown, Simon doesn't care about your age or how you look, he just helps people because that is what he wants to do like
Jesus. Simon is meant to be a Christ–figure in the Lord of the Flies because he is killed like Jesus, and is representing communion, he looks like an
angel being sent to heaven, and cares about everyone like Jesus. Simon is kind, caring, and acts and is similar to Jesus in many ways. He is meant to
try to bring peace and help everyone on this island. This island needed a protector because of all the chaos that happened and he was meant to be

lord of the flies: simon as a christ figure Essay
The character of Simon in William Golding's Lord of the Flies has often been viewed as the Christ figure of the novel. If you were to examine the
actions of both Simon and Jesus, you would find a number of incidents that parallel each other.      One of the first
things that Simon does that depicts a Christ–like action, is found in chapter 3 when he helps the littluns get fruit, "Simon found for them the fruit they
could not reach" (Golding 56). During his lifetime, Jesus often aided the hungry, one example being when he turned 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish into
enough food for thousands of people. Later in the chapter Simon finds himself in the wilderness. While there, Simon was calm and enjoyed the solitude

Many of the prophecies revealed by Jesus were also disregarded and not accepted by everyone. This depicts that both Simon and Jesus were
misunderstood by the people around them.      Simon's encounter with the Lord of the Flies in chapter nine can be
seen as a parallel to Jesus' confrontation with Satan in the desert. Simon and Jesus were both challenged by evil but overcame it. Although, the
Lord of the Flies would reveal to Simon that it is the evil within the boys, "You knew, didn't you? I'm part of you?" (Golding 143). From this, he
reaches an epiphany and later leaves to tell the other boys. While returning to tell the boys, Simon is hit in the side by a spear. Jesus was also
stabbed in the side before his crucifixion.      The deaths of Simon and Jesus also had many things in common.
Both were killed by members of their community, and were persecuted for the sins and evil of others. The events that directly followed the deaths
of Simon and Jesus are very much similar also. According to the Bible, when Jesus was being persecuted "there was darkness over the whole land"
(Mark 15:33) and once he died the earth shook. When Simon died "the clouds opened and let down the rain like a waterfall" (Golding 153).

Simon Lord Of The Flies Essay
In the book Lord of the Flies, Ralph and Simon seem to be good characters. But there is a notable difference between the two mention characters in
their goodness. Ralph and Simon were the "good guys" compared to Jack and his cronies. Ralph and him were against Jack ruling because they knew
how bad Jack was. Simon was part of Ralph's tribe before Simon was killed by Jack and his tribe. Ralph and Simon are similar in how they care about
the other boys and their need to maximize their survival rate. They are also similar because they want a central leadership with someone trustworthy.
Ralph and Simon, unlike most other "big uns" don't mess around with the "littluns" which proves their kindness. When the littluns couldn't reach fruit,

Both of the boys' goodness stemmed from different sources. Simon enjoyed being alone even though he enjoyed helping other people. He also was
the only person who was not paralyzed being alone and did not believe in the beast. Simon said, "Maybe the beast is only us." This showed that
Simon had a deeper understanding of what was happening to the other boys because of them living on the island. The reader believes that Simon's
goodness is from nature kind of like Gautama Buddha because his goodness comes from his inner–self and nature. Simon is also a martyr due to being
killed by Jack's tribe because unbeknownst to them, he was running so fast to tell them about his discovery of the dead airman. The reader believes
that Ralph's goodness on the other hand, was learnt from civilization and his father who was an Admiral in the Royal Navy. Ralph's morals were
based from society because just like the other people from Jack's tribe, Ralph's morals slowly deteriorate over time too. Simon's morals never
changed because his goodness was influenced from himself. Ralph tried to justify Simon's death. The reader believes that this was a sign that Ralph's
morals were slowly being stripped due to no outside influences of the "real

Essay about Lord of the Flies Simon as Christ
Simon, Christ–figure?
In the book Lord of the Flies the charecter, Simon, is portrayed as a Christ–figure. He is shown to have all the qualities Christ has: intelligence,
determination, and resiliance. Simon also is portrayed like Christ physically, he is skinny and not a strong person. Simon was very calm, kind, and he
enjoyed being alone when ever he could.
Simon was made fun of by the other kids because of how he acted and the things he said. One such ocassion was when he was talking to Ralph and
said, "You'll get back to where you came from" to which Ralph replied a few lines later, "You're batty." (Page 111) Simon here

Simon also never fell for the illusions of the beast and despite the fact that he is one of the smallest biguns he never follows the others and always does
what he wants to and says what he wants to. One such occasion where he shows his defiance of the others beliefs is when he says to everyone,
"I think we ought to climb the mountain." (page 128) This shows that he knows the beast isn't real and he shows no fear of the unknown.
Christ called people to do things they thought impossible just as Simon did here. Many people said that the things Jesus wanted them to do were
impossible, and here whne Simon said they should do something they said that since the three strongest boys couldn't do it no one could.
Simon was even sacraficed during the ritual dance so that the other boys may live. When Simon died he was killed by all the boys, but many of
them are told that it wasn't really him. Ralph knows it was Simon they killed, and he realizes how everyone is becoming because Simon died. Also
the way Simon was shown in the movie after he died showed him as a Christ–figure in the story. Simon dies on water that is calm, peaceful, and pure,
the light reflects off the water and gives a kind of feeling of holiness, and the way he was floating with his arms stretched out like he was on the cross
as Jesus was.

Essay On Simon Lord Of The Flies
Simon's spirituality has given him the ability to feel one with nature and find deeper meanings. Although the terrible events on the island have
influenced the boys, Simon was able to rise above evil and remain his innate self. However, savagery and civilization together had destroyed
Simon's spiritual truth. Simon's character is different from the boys on the island. After learning about Golding's past I believe Simon represents
hope for Golding and is someone he has always aspired to be. The characters in this book are in every one of us, but it is who we chose to be, that
defines us. Simon was the only one able to recognize the truth about the beast. Through Simon, Golding's message was that fear and shame are the
biggest obstacles, but it is how we chose to overcome these beasts that matter. Simon was the only one who knew the truth, but after the boys kill

Simon is the name of one of Jesus' twelve disciples and is continuously compared with Jesus throughout the book. Jesus was crucified for doing
good and preaching the word of God. Similarly, Simon was killed for spreading the truth of the beast. However, he was killed just as Jesus was.
Golding writes, "... dressed Simon's coarse hair with brightness" (170).Through this diction, I depicted an image of a halo as if Simon was an
angel of Heaven. Simon was not savage nor civilized but he is outside the spectrum because he is pure in heart and kind. Simon knows the only
way to get over the fear of the beast is to face it. As the boys become more fearful, the beast becomes worse and Simon, being the only one knowing
the truth, is killed. The message that I have taken away is we are not born good but taught to be good through society. We must learn to fight the
beast within us or else once civilization is taken away we will revert back to our true and savage selves, unless we are innately good as

Golding also draws a parallel between Simon and Jesus Christ. When Simon converses with the Lord of the Flies, an equivalent to Satan, the Lord of
the Flies told Simon, "We are going to have fun on this island! So don't try it on, my poor misguided boy, or else– Or else, we shall do you? See? Jack
and Roger and Maurice and Robert and Bill and Piggy and Ralph. Do you" (143). In this conversation, the Lord of the Flies seems to tempt Simon
to not interfere in the release and spread of savagery by threatening him with the fact that he will be killed by his own comrades if he does not
embrace savagery. Also, Simon is able to even predict his own death if he were to die from attempting to prevent the spread and descent of the boys

Simon is attempting to spread his revelation, but failed to and was instead brutally attacked by his own friends. However, Golding chooses to
make Simon try to spread that realization instead of making Simon crying out to stop hitting him. Instead of yelling to stop, Simon tries to spread
his message just like Jesus Christ wanted to before his crucifixion. Golding uses this action to draw that specific parallel. Finally, when Simon's
body is taken by the sea, the sea "dressed Simon's coarse hair with brightness. The line of his cheek silvered and the turn of his shoulder became
sculptured marble. The strange attendant creatures ... busied themselves around his head. The body lifted a fraction of an inch from the sand and a
bubble of air escaped from the mouth with a wet plop " (154). Simon's body seems to undergo a change as if he is becoming god–like or experiencing
a rebirth after his death. The creatures, a representation of angels, are gathering Simon's soul to take him to heaven. This is very similar to how
Jesus Christ, the prophet who had a revelation that could not be spread when attacked by his own people, experienced a rebirth and eventually
ascended into heaven. This story is reflected when Simon himself experiences a similar life to Jesus and eventually welcomed by the sea, a parallel to
God and heaven. All of this seems to say that Simon is a Christ–figure and further supports the fact that we are all sinners waiting to be saved by God
and Jesus

Simon, meanwhile, seems to exist outside the conflict between Ralph and Jack, between civilization and savagery. We see Simon's kind and generous
nature through his actions in this chapter. He helps Ralph build the huts when the other boys would rather play, indicating his helpfulness, discipline,
and dedication to the common good. Simon helps the littluns reach a high branch of fruit, indicating his kindness and sympathy–a sharp contrast to
many of the older boys, who would rather torment the littluns than help them. When Simon sits alone in the jungle glade marveling at the beauty of
nature, we see that he feels a basic connection with the natural world. On the whole, Simon seems to have a basic goodness and kindness that comes

example, in chapter three, Simon "found for them the fruit they could not reach, pulled off the choicest from up in the foliage, passed them back to

The teachings of Jesus Christ promote goodness in man and society, but are often opposed by the profound concept that human nature is rooted in
evil. In modern literature there are often suggestive cues that allude to a parallel between Jesus Christ and complex characters that embody a certain
innate goodness. Simon is the epitome of a Christ figure in The Lord of the Flies, in his actions, realizations, and later his death, thus complicating
the symmetry that the characters of Jack and Ralph create amid civilization and savagery, and the evil possible on both ends of the spectrum. The
boys' relationships to the natural world generally fall into one of three categories of their own individual relationships with nature. Every character in
Lord of the Flies sees nature as an adversary, whereas Simon is comfortable and at peace in it. Jack wants to dominate nature, Ralph sees nature as

Simon is dismissed in many ways by others. One being his overall physical frailty and uselessness to the boys for most tasks. Also, Simon seems

understand his identity so the boys will finally realize the devil doesn't exist, and it merely an idea representative of the beast inside of all of them.
He sacrifices himself for the boys' peace of mind. By courageously seeking to confront the figure on the mountaintop, Simon fulfills his destiny of
revelation. He doesn't get to share his revelation with the other boys because they are not ready to accept or understand it. Instead he dies as a result
of being made the scapegoat for the boys' unshakeable fear. On a deserted island the cruelty of man becomes very

Simon's Role as the Silent Prophet in Lord of the Flies

  • 1. Evil In Lord Of The Flies Throughout history, philosophers have wondered what essentially drives people to do certain actions. It is not clear whether these actions occur because humans are intrinsically good or bad. Nevertheless, the novel Lord of the Flies and several historical examples provide some insight into why human beings may be fundamentally bad. To begin with, the death of Simon in Lord of the Flies illustrates innate human evil. Simon's death is preceded by Jack's tribe singing a savage chant. They violently murder Simon, mistaking him as the beast. Children's instantaneous instincts drove them to kill Simon. Engaging in an unplanned murder, these children effectively demonstrate that when they relinquish rationale which is a product of civilization, impulses lead them to act savagely. What is also significant in this scene is that Ralph and Piggy, the two characters mainly portrayed as being rational, join the cruel murder and even begin to express instinctive behavior from their inner self. It is irrational for any person and especially children, to commit murder. Therefore,...show more content... This scene specifically focuses on Roger's cruelty. What is different from Simon's death is that Roger intentionally pushed a boulder to kill Piggy. Roger's hatred against Piggy is negatively exhibited in this way. This incident happens after Simon's death, and thus it shows that meanwhile the driving force behind the murder changed from unintentional to intentional manner. Continued isolation from civilization facilitates acting just based on one's will as there are no strict rules to follow in the island, ultimately leading to evil conduct like murder. If human beings are inherently good, then it is not possible to explain why even young children keep murdering each other and act based on their impulses. As a result, the idea that humans are fundamentally evil is plausible to explain the events of Lord of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Lord Of The Flies Simon Monologue Thank you all for being here today. We are gathered here today to remember Simon. He was such a good person! Sure, he was shy and quiet but he was also kind, helpful, selfless, determined and caring. I remember the first day I met him. I saw a small weird looking group of boys, dressed in black cloaks singing and walking along the beach. I thought it was so odd, then when they arrived at our part of the beach and he fainted, at first I was a little worried but then when I heard Jack say "He's always throwing a faint," "He did in Gib.; and Addis; and at matins over the precentor." I did not feel so sorry for him anymore, I thought he was just seeking attention. Now I want to tell you how Simon died, its a shame he had to die the way he did... you see there was this feast, now we thought he was there too, eating and having a grand time with us but what we did not realize was that he was the beast crawling from the forest. There was no beast that night, just him. Simon... He was stabbed and washed away in the tide....show more content... I remember one time when jack smacked my spectacles off and no one dared help me except for Simon, he picked them up for me. I wish I was more grateful for the things he did for me, but at that moment jealousy had taken over me... I was jealous that no one picked on him but only on me, even if they thought he was a little weird. Although we thought these things we all loved having him on the island even if we did not say Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. "What I mean is... maybe it's only us," (Golding, 89). Simon, the keeper of hope, was talking in the assembly, which was called to discuss the beast, and explained that the boys might just be their own beast. Also, Simon is showing that the boys are all alone without any adults to tell them what to do, so they had to figure out what to do by themselves. By saying this, the young boys had to find a way to create a new civilization with rules, jobs, and a leader, which allowed room for conflicts to sneak in. The goal for the writing is so that the readers can understand that there are roles that are taken so that civilizations can thrive and survive. William Golding, author of Lord of the Flies, explores several themes throughout the novel in order ...show more content... I don't know why," (Golding, 82). In addition, the author of Lord of the Flies uses the theme that people abuse unearned power, which shows people that there will always be a leader, and that leader will not care about the people he is ruling over. Ralph and Jack were just put into leadership roles without doing much, and since then, many negative events had occurred. Those negative events had been caused by the misconduct of power. "Jack held out his hand for the conch," (Golding, 35). Jack had wanted to be in power over Ralph, even though he had not won the vote, so he kept trying to abuse the small amount of power that he did have. Jack was very power hungry and didn't care what precautions he had to take in order to gain power. "And you shut up! Who are you, anyway? Sitting there telling people what to do," (Golding, 91). Jack had been very upset with Ralph for trying to suggest different ideas than what he had wanted, and Jack felt that he was the better leader over Ralph. Thus, Jack was using the power that he had to try and dominate over Ralph. Leaders arise in everything and some of them use their power to benefit Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Simon as Silent Prophet of Lord Of The Flies The role of the prophet changes with the society in which he lives. In Modern America, a prophet is a visionary, telling his people what they can become; in Biblical times, a prophet was the voice of God, telling his people what they had to become to fulfill their covenant with God. In William Golding's Lord of the Flies, though, the prophet told his people nothing; he realized what they had already become, and he dared not tell them because he knew they would turn against him. Simon lived in knowledge and fear because his society denied the role of the prophet, and he did not fight it because he wanted so much to be part of that society. The basic premise of Lord of...show more content... Simon, though he did not tell the other boys of his vision, was incapable of forgetting. He was the observant character, the quiet philosopher. He was often alone, sometimes by his own choice, and he liked to wander into the peaceful jungle. He sincerely cared about the other boys, sometimes helping the young ones to fetch fruit, yet "Simon turned away from them and went where the just perceptible path led him. Soon high jungle closed in" (56). He loved solitude and yet felt loneliness; he was alien to the other boys. The boys did not think anyone would be stupid enough to go into the jungle by night: "The assembly grinned at the thought of going out into the darkness. Then Simon stood up and Ralph looked at him in astonishment" (85). Many of the boys even thought he was "batty" because he left the group to spend time alone. He did not fear the jungle, and he did not fear the Beast. "'Maybe,' he said hesitantly, 'maybe there is a beast. . . . maybe it's only us'" (89). The Beast takes many forms in the boys' imaginations; once, they saw a strange shape moving at the top of a mountain, and they were afraid that it was the Beast. No one dared to go near it save Simon, who went alone to the mountaintop during one of his sojourns; he discovered that the Beast was only a dead parachuter whose gear shifted in the wind. Ironically, the dead man was a soldier, a symbol of thesavagery that was the true Beast. However, Simon's compassion Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Lord Of The Flies Simon Character Analysis Essay Lord of the Flies: William Golding In Lord of the Flies, Simon shows to be an important role in the story as he uncovers the mystery of the beastie. He is seen to be shy and to himself but soon shows his full brain capability and what he can offer to the group but it goes unnoticed. His personality is unique and shows much potential, as does mine. Both me and Simon are independent, sensitive, and introverted as this presents an idealistic nature. Simon is one to resist the influence of those around him. He feels he is capable of making his own decisions and to keep in line with his priorities. "... How everyone was going to work hard until the shelters were finished?... All day I've been working with Simon. No one else..." (Golding 50)...show more content... Me being an introvert as well, I can relate, where the absence of confidence has stuck. It seems to be really hard for me to openly share my opinions and my assessments to most topics. "Simon turned away from them and went the just perceptible path led him... Holding his breath he cocked a critical ear at the sounds of the island." (Golding 57) When wanting to be alone, Simon heads to a secret place to take in the silence. When I get frustrated or need calming down, I too find a quiet safe place for me where I feel comfortable to let out all the negative energy. While being in this mind set, there is a great deal of thinking and feeling happening. Throughout the book, Simon finds a deeper meaning to all things around him and provides information upon the Lord of the Flies but is then ignored and unappreciated. "You shut up, young Simon! Why couldn't you say there wasn't a beast?" (Golding 93) Simon desperately tries to tell them he doesn't think the beast is real but more as an imaginary figure of their inner rage, but all he got in the end was being yelled at and disregarded by the group. With his theories, he uses his feelings to produce a reasonable and opinionated judgement to the beastie. In my personality traits, I use feeling to make my decisions based on my emotions along with Simon, going and doing whatever he wants based on what he feels like doing. "However, Simon thought of the beast, there rose before his inward sight the picture of a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Character Essay of Simon The appearance of Simon in the novel The Lord of the Flies is of great significance and is substantial for the development of the story because he made lots of points in the story. First of all, it is important to state that he sent simple, yet deep messages throughout the novel, with morals behind them. Religiously speaking, Simon can be identified as the Christ–figure in the story. Simon also had a very specific role in the novel in being the character in contact with nature. Simon's significance in the story is obvious, and one way to deduce this is by identifying his messages. Throughout the story, Simon gave a variety of advice that did not seem important at the moment, but turned out to be substantial as time went by. Simon ...show more content... Beelzebub also tempted Simon and gave him a forecast of what would happen. Like Jesus, Simon knows he has to die to allow the tribe to subsist. The facts that everybody was guilty, and that no one did anything to bring him back to life link him to Christ in a greater proportion. After Simon's death, the tribe started to believe in him, especially Ralph, noticing Simon was right and he tried to tell them the truth about the Beast remembering that it was inside all of them; similar to what occurred with Jesus and his apostles. An even more compelling similarity between Jesus and Simon is that "Jesus then leads three of his disciples to a very high mountain, where he undergoes the Transfiguration from Jesus to the Christ figure, the true Son of God. He then comes down from the mountain and begins his priestly ministry" (Racicot). Like Jesus, Simon goes out to the woods and meditates, coming back with more clear answers and perspective of things. On one occasion, Simon went up to the mountain and talked with the Lord of the Flies, having a similar situation to the one Jesus had when he was in the desert meditating. Simon's relation to religion is evident, and his role was even clearer. Simon had a specific mission in the novel: the opportunity to talk to the beast and receive answers, very similar to revelations. His role was to help the boys notice what the Beast really was, and not Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. How Does Simon Change In Lord Of The Flies Children are savages by nature, when no adults are around. One kid on the island truly doesn't have any savage in him. Simon is a Christ–like figure, that continuously stays true to himself and his morals. Simon will not let anyone or anything get in the way of this. Simon is the prime example of a superego. Simon stays true to his moral rules by, watching out for the boys and trying to keep civilization on the island. Simon gives food to Piggy, when nobody else will, without hesitation. Simon helps to build shelters instead of killing because he knows in order to be civilized he will need to have shelter and doesn't want to include himself in any killing. When the boys plan to kill Piggy, Simon doesn't even engage in their conversations. ...show more content... Although all of the other boys on the island are turning into savages, Simon does not follow. The other boys are becoming savages because it is instinct. Simon is not like the other boys, in this sense. Simon is a Christ–like figure, so he isn't able to become savage. This island is a very harsh environment, so only the savage will be able to survive. The other boys are not always savage, as they have developed the savagery over time. Simon isn't able to develop this and he isn't able to survive on the island, just as piggy. Due to this Simon will not be able to survive. The novel is foreshadowing that Simon will not make it, as he has not turned savage "You'll get back to where you came from" (Golding 111). This quote implies that other boys, such as Ralph, will get back and make it but Simon will not. William Golding, is showing that he believes everyone has some savage in them. Golding believes that as people are put into bad situations, the savage starts to come out. He shows this in the boys, the boys are very "normal" as they first arrive at the island, but the longer they stay the more savage they become. Simon isn't becoming savage no matter how long he has been on the island because he is a Christ–like figure and the author wants to show that the boys become savage, but Christ would not. Golding is showing that he thinks all people are inherently Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. In different stories people may be represented as a figure of Christ. They may do things similar to what Jesus or God would do constantly. In the book, Lord of the Flies, there is a person who is represented as a Christ–figure. The person who fills this role is Simon. Simon is represented in Lord of the Flies as a Christ–figure because his death is similar to Jesus' and communion, has imagery of being sent to heaven, and he is kind to everyone. In this book, Simon's death was meant to be represented as Jesus' death and communion. This is shown by, Simon was betrayed and killed by his friends. This is just like how Jesus was betrayed and killed by his followers. Also Simon was killed like a crucifixion shown by, ВЁAt once the crowd surged after...show more content... Simon never had a problem helping anyone or making them happy. Simon was helping the littleuns when nobody else would,"...Simon found for them the fruit they couldn't reach, pulled off the choicest from up the foliage..."(Golding 56). In this it shows how Simon was helping the littleuns even though ever thought of them as weight on their backs. This could be compared to Jesus how he helps people like giving a blind man vision again. Simon also saved a littleun when he was stuck in the circle but they made the group switch to attacking Simon. This is like when Jesus was crucified and died for our sins. One more example is that he was the only one who helped Piggy, like get his glasses after Jack knocked them off. Another thing Simon did was meditate to remain peaceful in between all the chaos around him. To add, he tried to warn them that the beast was not real which could have kept the kids more peaceful and not scared of the beast. This is like Jesus because he tries to keep peace in the world. As shown, Simon doesn't care about your age or how you look, he just helps people because that is what he wants to do like Jesus. Simon is meant to be a Christ–figure in the Lord of the Flies because he is killed like Jesus, and is representing communion, he looks like an angel being sent to heaven, and cares about everyone like Jesus. Simon is kind, caring, and acts and is similar to Jesus in many ways. He is meant to try to bring peace and help everyone on this island. This island needed a protector because of all the chaos that happened and he was meant to be Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. lord of the flies: simon as a christ figure Essay The character of Simon in William Golding's Lord of the Flies has often been viewed as the Christ figure of the novel. If you were to examine the actions of both Simon and Jesus, you would find a number of incidents that parallel each other.      One of the first things that Simon does that depicts a Christ–like action, is found in chapter 3 when he helps the littluns get fruit, "Simon found for them the fruit they could not reach" (Golding 56). During his lifetime, Jesus often aided the hungry, one example being when he turned 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish into enough food for thousands of people. Later in the chapter Simon finds himself in the wilderness. While there, Simon was calm and enjoyed the solitude of...show more content... Many of the prophecies revealed by Jesus were also disregarded and not accepted by everyone. This depicts that both Simon and Jesus were misunderstood by the people around them.      Simon's encounter with the Lord of the Flies in chapter nine can be seen as a parallel to Jesus' confrontation with Satan in the desert. Simon and Jesus were both challenged by evil but overcame it. Although, the Lord of the Flies would reveal to Simon that it is the evil within the boys, "You knew, didn't you? I'm part of you?" (Golding 143). From this, he reaches an epiphany and later leaves to tell the other boys. While returning to tell the boys, Simon is hit in the side by a spear. Jesus was also stabbed in the side before his crucifixion.      The deaths of Simon and Jesus also had many things in common. Both were killed by members of their community, and were persecuted for the sins and evil of others. The events that directly followed the deaths of Simon and Jesus are very much similar also. According to the Bible, when Jesus was being persecuted "there was darkness over the whole land" (Mark 15:33) and once he died the earth shook. When Simon died "the clouds opened and let down the rain like a waterfall" (Golding 153).      One of the last parallels between Simon and Jesus is shown after Simon's death. • 10. Simon Lord Of The Flies Essay In the book Lord of the Flies, Ralph and Simon seem to be good characters. But there is a notable difference between the two mention characters in their goodness. Ralph and Simon were the "good guys" compared to Jack and his cronies. Ralph and him were against Jack ruling because they knew how bad Jack was. Simon was part of Ralph's tribe before Simon was killed by Jack and his tribe. Ralph and Simon are similar in how they care about the other boys and their need to maximize their survival rate. They are also similar because they want a central leadership with someone trustworthy. Ralph and Simon, unlike most other "big uns" don't mess around with the "littluns" which proves their kindness. When the littluns couldn't reach fruit, ...show more content... Both of the boys' goodness stemmed from different sources. Simon enjoyed being alone even though he enjoyed helping other people. He also was the only person who was not paralyzed being alone and did not believe in the beast. Simon said, "Maybe the beast is only us." This showed that Simon had a deeper understanding of what was happening to the other boys because of them living on the island. The reader believes that Simon's goodness is from nature kind of like Gautama Buddha because his goodness comes from his inner–self and nature. Simon is also a martyr due to being killed by Jack's tribe because unbeknownst to them, he was running so fast to tell them about his discovery of the dead airman. The reader believes that Ralph's goodness on the other hand, was learnt from civilization and his father who was an Admiral in the Royal Navy. Ralph's morals were based from society because just like the other people from Jack's tribe, Ralph's morals slowly deteriorate over time too. Simon's morals never changed because his goodness was influenced from himself. Ralph tried to justify Simon's death. The reader believes that this was a sign that Ralph's morals were slowly being stripped due to no outside influences of the "real Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Essay about Lord of the Flies Simon as Christ Simon, Christ–figure? In the book Lord of the Flies the charecter, Simon, is portrayed as a Christ–figure. He is shown to have all the qualities Christ has: intelligence, determination, and resiliance. Simon also is portrayed like Christ physically, he is skinny and not a strong person. Simon was very calm, kind, and he enjoyed being alone when ever he could. Simon was made fun of by the other kids because of how he acted and the things he said. One such ocassion was when he was talking to Ralph and said, "You'll get back to where you came from" to which Ralph replied a few lines later, "You're batty." (Page 111) Simon here has a prophecy about Ralph, and was...show more content... Simon also never fell for the illusions of the beast and despite the fact that he is one of the smallest biguns he never follows the others and always does what he wants to and says what he wants to. One such occasion where he shows his defiance of the others beliefs is when he says to everyone, "I think we ought to climb the mountain." (page 128) This shows that he knows the beast isn't real and he shows no fear of the unknown. Christ called people to do things they thought impossible just as Simon did here. Many people said that the things Jesus wanted them to do were impossible, and here whne Simon said they should do something they said that since the three strongest boys couldn't do it no one could. Simon was even sacraficed during the ritual dance so that the other boys may live. When Simon died he was killed by all the boys, but many of them are told that it wasn't really him. Ralph knows it was Simon they killed, and he realizes how everyone is becoming because Simon died. Also the way Simon was shown in the movie after he died showed him as a Christ–figure in the story. Simon dies on water that is calm, peaceful, and pure, the light reflects off the water and gives a kind of feeling of holiness, and the way he was floating with his arms stretched out like he was on the cross as Jesus was. • 12. Essay On Simon Lord Of The Flies Simon's spirituality has given him the ability to feel one with nature and find deeper meanings. Although the terrible events on the island have influenced the boys, Simon was able to rise above evil and remain his innate self. However, savagery and civilization together had destroyed Simon's spiritual truth. Simon's character is different from the boys on the island. After learning about Golding's past I believe Simon represents hope for Golding and is someone he has always aspired to be. The characters in this book are in every one of us, but it is who we chose to be, that defines us. Simon was the only one able to recognize the truth about the beast. Through Simon, Golding's message was that fear and shame are the biggest obstacles, but it is how we chose to overcome these beasts that matter. Simon was the only one who knew the truth, but after the boys kill Simon, it...show more content... Simon is the name of one of Jesus' twelve disciples and is continuously compared with Jesus throughout the book. Jesus was crucified for doing good and preaching the word of God. Similarly, Simon was killed for spreading the truth of the beast. However, he was killed just as Jesus was. Golding writes, "... dressed Simon's coarse hair with brightness" (170).Through this diction, I depicted an image of a halo as if Simon was an angel of Heaven. Simon was not savage nor civilized but he is outside the spectrum because he is pure in heart and kind. Simon knows the only way to get over the fear of the beast is to face it. As the boys become more fearful, the beast becomes worse and Simon, being the only one knowing the truth, is killed. The message that I have taken away is we are not born good but taught to be good through society. We must learn to fight the beast within us or else once civilization is taken away we will revert back to our true and savage selves, unless we are innately good as Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Simon In Lord Of The Flies Golding also draws a parallel between Simon and Jesus Christ. When Simon converses with the Lord of the Flies, an equivalent to Satan, the Lord of the Flies told Simon, "We are going to have fun on this island! So don't try it on, my poor misguided boy, or else– Or else, we shall do you? See? Jack and Roger and Maurice and Robert and Bill and Piggy and Ralph. Do you" (143). In this conversation, the Lord of the Flies seems to tempt Simon to not interfere in the release and spread of savagery by threatening him with the fact that he will be killed by his own comrades if he does not embrace savagery. Also, Simon is able to even predict his own death if he were to die from attempting to prevent the spread and descent of the boys into savagery....show more content... Simon is attempting to spread his revelation, but failed to and was instead brutally attacked by his own friends. However, Golding chooses to make Simon try to spread that realization instead of making Simon crying out to stop hitting him. Instead of yelling to stop, Simon tries to spread his message just like Jesus Christ wanted to before his crucifixion. Golding uses this action to draw that specific parallel. Finally, when Simon's body is taken by the sea, the sea "dressed Simon's coarse hair with brightness. The line of his cheek silvered and the turn of his shoulder became sculptured marble. The strange attendant creatures ... busied themselves around his head. The body lifted a fraction of an inch from the sand and a bubble of air escaped from the mouth with a wet plop " (154). Simon's body seems to undergo a change as if he is becoming god–like or experiencing a rebirth after his death. The creatures, a representation of angels, are gathering Simon's soul to take him to heaven. This is very similar to how Jesus Christ, the prophet who had a revelation that could not be spread when attacked by his own people, experienced a rebirth and eventually ascended into heaven. This story is reflected when Simon himself experiences a similar life to Jesus and eventually welcomed by the sea, a parallel to God and heaven. All of this seems to say that Simon is a Christ–figure and further supports the fact that we are all sinners waiting to be saved by God and Jesus Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Simon, meanwhile, seems to exist outside the conflict between Ralph and Jack, between civilization and savagery. We see Simon's kind and generous nature through his actions in this chapter. He helps Ralph build the huts when the other boys would rather play, indicating his helpfulness, discipline, and dedication to the common good. Simon helps the littluns reach a high branch of fruit, indicating his kindness and sympathy–a sharp contrast to many of the older boys, who would rather torment the littluns than help them. When Simon sits alone in the jungle glade marveling at the beauty of nature, we see that he feels a basic connection with the natural world. On the whole, Simon seems to have a basic goodness and kindness that comes from within Get more content on HelpWriting.net

For example, in chapter three, Simon "found for them the fruit they could not reach, pulled off the choicest from up in the foliage, passed them back to the endless, outstretched hands" (Golding 56). Simon cares for the littluns without a doubt, showing that he is selfless and considerate. He takes time out of his day to help others achieve their goals and help them get what they want even though he has his own priorities. Simon's actions suggest that he accepts everyone for who they are, good or bad, when he asks, " 'What else is there to do?' Yes, absolutely nothing this is a story of a man who wanted and received exactly that. Simon was a simple man, he did not expect much out of life and his life lived up to the expectation. • 19. The teachings of Jesus Christ promote goodness in man and society, but are often opposed by the profound concept that human nature is rooted in evil. In modern literature there are often suggestive cues that allude to a parallel between Jesus Christ and complex characters that embody a certain innate goodness. Simon is the epitome of a Christ figure in The Lord of the Flies, in his actions, realizations, and later his death, thus complicating the symmetry that the characters of Jack and Ralph create amid civilization and savagery, and the evil possible on both ends of the spectrum. The boys' relationships to the natural world generally fall into one of three categories of their own individual relationships with nature. Every character in Lord of the Flies sees nature as an adversary, whereas Simon is comfortable and at peace in it. Jack wants to dominate nature, Ralph sees nature as ...show more content...
