• Some parts are pretty some
parts are not……
• The only thing that is any
good when fried to a crisp is
bacon
• There are two kinds of care
workers…..
• Telling tales of survival
• Self Knowledge is the
beginning of Self Care

4. Signs of burn out
• Decreased energy levels - emotional and
physical. Tired in the morning
• Withdrawing from people & places
(clients/colleagues/family) Ring tones &
Rainy days
• Decreased productivity but not
necessarily decreased activity. Piles of
paper
• Difficult to concentrate or to care less and
less. Boy with gun
• Difficult to reach decisions – almost
impossible to implement.
5. Signs of burn out
• Physical symptoms, sleep & eating
disturbances, ulcers, headaches catch a
wake, changes in libido check
• Self defeating coping strategies, dockets
ceiling drinking, eating 95 DVD’s
• Preoccupations/obsessions - admin,
rules, areas
• Loss of courage and self worth, not able
to initiate or take risks. Planning out the
window
• Loose direction, feel aimless and
dissatisfied job hopping (running) depression
8. Contributing factors
• Lots of responsibility and little
control
• Working in a rigid (failing) system
• Superiors inattentive to personal
problems
• Exposed to severe circumstances
• Contact with victims and criminals
• Overloaded
• Bureaucratic paperwork. Grants
• Role conflict damned if you do,
damned if you don't
• Need to make decisions with little
time to think them through F36
• Lack of recognition and reward
financial or otherwise
9. Then we make our own
plans…..
• We can become angry or
distracted the blame game
• We fix things ourselves – if I
don’t do it, it wont get done
• Rigid thinking – my way or the
high way
• Refuge in power not
relationships I’ve got the power
• All or nothing thinking
• Rigid boundaries
• Meet each demand Yes
• Just become plain difficult NO
• Fall off the end of the world
• Into the pit…
