Objective
It is my passion to serve as a compass in disadvantaged communities where people, families and communities are
without any hope for their future in South Africa. People, families and communities who are just existing, without
any sense of direction in their lives and without being able to make a positive contribution in society. In these
communities, alcohol- and drug abuse as well as violence and child abuse is getting worse. The main reasons being
a lack of positive roll models and very low self worth. Using my training as a Life Skills Facilitator and Life Coach,
as well as the necessary experience I gained during the past ten years, working with and working in these
communities, I recognized the need for direction, positive character reinforcement, a need for positive self worth
and personal values.
I would like to have the opportunity to use my skills and training as well as my empathy for people without hope
in their lives, to make an effort to help them realize the positive impact they can possibly have on their families
their communities and in their workplace.
Experience
Research and Life Skills facilitation in disadvantaged communities January 2015 – October 2015
• I did extensive research on Aquaponics – Vegetable gardening in a soilless medium combining aquaculture (fish farming) with
hydroponics (vegetable farming in a soilless medium). The fish provide the necessary nutrients for the vegetables to thrive and the
yields are much higher and healthier without using chemicals or pesticides. The fish can be harvested and together this farming
method can create a sustainable food chain. I build an experimental closed system aquaponics-foodgarden at my house as test
model and operated it for a year. I would like to implement this system at the one informal settlement where I am currently involved
as a volunteer. I already started a vegetable garden for their soup kitchen and the first vegetables are being harvested now.
• I did research on Permaculture vegetable- and fruit gardening and started implementing the system at my house as well as in the
informal settlement where I am a volunteer. Both methods of gardening, Aquaponics and Permaculture is a sustainable and water
wise farming method in times of water shortages and in low rainfall areas.
• During 2015 I did BrightStar Life Skills training with members from the disadvantaged communities in and around Melkbosstrand
near Cape Town. Combined with the Life Skills training I did Life Coaching and one-on-one therapy sessions with community
members for alcohol and drug abuse, depression and extensive family problems. The problems these communities are facing is
boredom, lack of education and the lack of job opportunities for minimum schooled people. I am in contact with an small NGO to
provide skills training, but because they work on a volunteer basis, not many trainers came forward to offer their skills.
• I offered my skills and knowledge to the ACVV Koeberg – Social workers to help them in their line of work in the disadvantaged
communities. These communities and I have a good understanding and I worked hard over the past 10 years to build a relationship
of trust and respect between us.

Dutch Reformed Church Melkbosstrand – Assistant Scribe March 2011 – April 2015
• My work at the church was a wonderful opportunity to get to know the whole Melkbosstrand community well. I build a good
relationship with the congregation and a working relationship with the other churches, businesses’, NGO’S as well as the South
African Police Services in our community.
• My work consisted of the following:
1. A good knowledge of Microsoft Office and Publisher – With these tools I managed al the Power Point presentations for Sunday
services, a weekly newsletter, various publications of flyers and adverts in local newspapers. Typing, copying and miscellaneous
tasks for members of the congregation and ministers.
2. In my capacity as a therapist, I saw many individuals from our congregation and from the rest of Melkbosstrand for therapy
sessions.
3. I actively took part in our congregation’s various functions, duties in the community, choir and with my positive outlook and
caring nature tried to make our church a welcoming environment for everybody visiting our offices and church during the week.
4. My knowledge of people in our community with material need and food shortage, led me to contact a local filling station to ask
for their help. We receive their deli products taken off the shelves each day. I arranged with a company, doing direct marketing
of products, to supply us with their surplus food products. Once a week we packed food parcels for the people in need. This
project is still going on.
5. I was involved in BrightStar Life Skills facilitation for members of the congregation.
ACVV Koeberg – Social workers offices 2008 – February 2011
• I started as a volunteer with gardening projects in the informal settlements in and around Melkbosstrand. Teaching
the participants vegetable gardening to sustain themselves and to sell the extras as an income. Unfortunately not
many of the participants carried on with their home gardens. The negative mindset of helplessness and
hopelessness played and is still playing a huge roll in their day-to-day lives.
• I was part of establishing a pre-school class for children from these communities to be exposed to an school
environment where they could learn the necessary skills to adapt to and be excepted into the Primary School in
Melkbosstrand. We realized that these children were at a huge disadvantage with no previous stimulation in a
teaching and disciplined surroundings. Only three of the first group of children, were accepted in the Primary
School the next year. The school is doing well at the moment and is called Clever Kids Academy.
• The ACVV Koeberg appointed me as their community developer, working between the communities and the
ACVV Koeberg. I was part of informative community projects, uplifting and encouraging parents and children to
persue a better future.
