Experience
Research and Life Skills facilitation in disadvantaged communities
January 2015 – August 2016
• I did extensive research on Aquaponics – Vegetable gardening in a soilless
medium combining aquaculture (fish farming) with hydroponics (vegetable
farming in a soilless medium). The fish provide the necessary nutrients for the
vegetables to thrive and the yields are much higher and healthier without using
chemicals or pesticides. The fish can be harvested and together this farming
method can create a sustainable food chain.
• I did research on Permaculture vegetable- and fruit gardening and started
implementing the system at my house as well as in the informal settlement where
I am a volunteer. Both methods of gardening, Aquaponics and Permaculture are
sustainable and water wise farming methods in times of water shortages and in
low rainfall areas.
• Since 2014 until August 2016, I facilitated BrightStar Life Skills training for
members from the disadvantaged communities in and around Melkbosstrand near
Cape Town. Combined with the Life Skills training I did Life Coaching and one-
on-one therapy sessions with community members for alcohol and drug abuse,
depression and extensive family problems. The problems these communities are
facing are boredom, lack of education and the lack of job opportunities for
minimum schooled people. I offered my skills and knowledge to the ACVV
Koeberg – Social workers to help them in their line of work in the disadvantaged
communities. These communities and I have a good understanding and I worked
hard over the past 10 years to build a relationship of trust and respect between
us. I facilitated Life Skills training to community members and businesses as well
as at Boland College in Paarl, for students from disadvantaged communities in
the Western Cape.

Dutch Reformed Church Melkbosstrand – Assistant Scribe
March 2011 – April 2015
My work at the church was a wonderful opportunity to get to know the whole
Melkbosstrand community well. I build a good relationship with the community
members, businesses’, NGO’ as well as the South African Police Services in our
community.
My work consisted of the following:
1. A good knowledge of Microsoft Office and Publisher – With these tools I
managed al the Power Point presentations, a weekly newsletter, various
publications of flyers and adverts in local newspapers. Typing, copying and
miscellaneous tasks.
2. In my capacity as a therapist, I saw many individuals from our congregation
and from the rest of the community for therapy sessions.
3. My knowledge of community members with material need and food shortage,
led me to contact a local filling station to ask for their help. We receive their
deli products taken off the shelves each day. I arranged with a company,
doing direct marketing of products, to supply us with their surplus food
products.
4. I was involved in BrightStar Life Skills facilitation for community members.
ACVV Koeberg – Social workers offices 2008 – February 2011
• I started as a volunteer with gardening projects in the informal settlements in
and around Melkbosstrand. Teaching the participant’ vegetable gardening to
sustain their families.
• I was part of establishing a pre-school class for children from these
communities to be exposed to a school environment where they could learn
the necessary skills to successfully adapt to and be accepted into Primary
School to start their formal school education, preparing them for life. We
realized that these children were at a huge disadvantage with no previous
exposure to mental stimulation in teaching and disciplined surroundings. The
school is doing well at the moment and is called Clever Kids Academy.
• The ACVV Koeberg appointed me as their community developer, working
between the communities and the ACVV Koeberg. I was part of informative
community projects, uplifting and encouraging parents and children to pursue
a better future.
Self employed – Various projects 1994 –2007
