2. The moat is a defensive structure used mainly in the Middle Ages to protect defensive
forts or castles. The building is actually an artificial (or natural) depression filled with
water. The recess is several meters wide and deep, designed to prevent the attackers
from approaching the castle. The artificially created island was mostly connected to the
surroundings by a drawbridge. Water moats can also be found today in horse riding
or in horse racing, where these small landscaping sites serve as obstacles to horse
riders' racing or horse racing.
