Folding bridge karishma 0837

  1. 1. The Rolling BridgeThomas Heatherwick studio
  2. 2. The studio was commissioned to design apedestrian bridge to span an inlet of the GrandUnion Canal at Paddington Basin, London, andprovide an access route for workers andresidents. Crucially, the bridge needed to opento allow access for the boat moored in theinlet.
  3. 3. the 40-foot-long remote-controlled hydraulicbridge was designed to be transformable, easyto use and not noticeable at the first sight.
  4. 4. A common approach to designing openingbridges is to have a single rigid element thatfractures and lifts out of the way. RollingBridge opens by slowly and smoothly curlinguntil it transforms from a conventional, straightbridge, into a circular sculpture which sits onthe bank of the canal.
  5. 5. The structure opens using a series of hydraulic rams integrated into the balustrade. As itcurls, each of its eight segments simultaneously lifts, causing it to roll until the two endstouch and form a circle. The bridge can be stopped at any point along its journey.
