  3. 3. NHD<br />The National Hydrographic Dataset is a comprehensive set of digital spatial data representing the surface water of the United States using common features such as lakes, ponds, streams, rivers, canals, and oceans.<br />Also includes the Watershed Boundary Dataset, aka WBD. <br />

NHD Applications<br />Base layer for hydro features in cartographic applications.<br />Model features include:<br />Flow direction network that traces the water downstream or upstream.<br />An addressing system to link specific information about the water to a point such as water discharge, water quality, and fish population.<br />
  5. 5. NHD Applications (2)<br />Model features allow for advanced analysis such as:<br />Publishing and<br />Analyzing water pollution data<br />Prioritizing watersheds for conservation<br />Incident command for<br />Toxic spills into water-<br />ways<br />
  6. 6. NHD Data<br />Scale of NHD data varies by state<br />West Virginia, and much of the US, is 1:24,000 scale data<br />Includes all water features from USGS Topographic maps<br />This means much of WV’s data is quite old. <br />

Stewardship<br />The term “stewardship” refers to the mechanism by which the NHD data is improved and maintained.<br />Large Federal agencies do not have the knowledge to maintain these datasets, so…<br />Local Stewards are encouraged to take over and maintain this data, with support from the USSGS<br />
