Market Design Task Force present memorandum to European Commission
The World Energy Council’s member committee led European Market
Design Task Force, recently met with the Director General of the
European Commission, Dominique Ristori, to present highlights of a
memorandum on energy market designs. The Task Force, chaired by
Marco Margheri from the Council’s Italian member committee,
previously carried out a survey among the Council’s European
member committees to identify future market design uncertainties that
are not addressed in the current EU agenda. Based on the outcomes
of the survey, the Task Force prepared a memorandum that
highlighted these uncertainties and presented it to the commission on

World Energy Scenarios: Update
Following the series of regional workshops held throughout the world, the
World Energy Scenarios work has finalised its consultative stage and is
now entering a new major phase of its development work. Our project
partner, Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), is currently running the second
Scenario quantification while the Scenario Study group continues to
improve the global Scenario narratives which still include Jazz, and
Symphony from our previous scenarios work and a third emerging

Future Energy Leaders push for greater diversity
The World Energy Council is pleased to welcome this year’s 35 new
participants into its Future Energy Leaders (FEL) programme. The 100
energy leaders who are part of the FEL programme are highly motivated
young professionals with a solid interest and proven track record in the
energy sector with the potential to become a leader. Today they
constitute an increasingly strong, promising and diverse group of young
talents at the heart of the energy leaders’ community. Read more
Greek vote of confidence for the energy sector
More than two hundred participants attended the first energy market
international conference organised by the World Energy Council’s Greek
Member Committee and the Hellenic Association for Energy Economics.
Presidents, CEOs and other executives from major companies of the
international and local energy market were among the guests at the
conference, ‘Energy Market: Unlocking Greece’s’ potential’, in Athens.
Representatives of international and European organisations were also
there to give their perspective on current developments around the energy

Paris agreement: an ambitious course
Members of the Conseil Français de l’Énergie recently gathered to hear
the Chair of the Agency for Environment and Energy Management
(ADEME) share his views on the 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21)
two months after it was held, and analyse the results of the Paris
Agreement. Bruno Léchevin reflected on its progress and successes to
the French member committee of the World Energy Council at a
‘Décryptage’ breakfast meeting in Paris on 3 February, and hailed the
agreement as an historic turning point in the UN negotiations on climate.

Japanese nuclear plants still standing after
earthquakes hit Kumamoto
The World Energy Council’s Japanese member committee had been
consistently updating the Council’s network after the Fukushima events
back in 2011 and is working towards building stronger resilience in the
country, even more so in the context of the new earthquake that
hit Kumamoto Prefecture in Kyushu, southern region of Japan on 14 April.
Following the magnitude 6.5 earthquake, the World Energy Council Japan
reports no damage was done to the five reactors of the two nuclear power
stations in the region. Read more
Estonia to host Symposium to celebrate 100 years of oil shale mining
In the context of a global energy transition where countries are looking at
what is the best energy resources mix to balance their Energy Trilemma,
Estonia will be hosting an International Symposium on Oil Shale. The
symposium called “Oil Shale 100” will be held 20 - 23 September to
connect resource holders, technology developers, researchers,
government representatives and business leaders from across the world
to celebrate a momentous anniversary in oil shale development - 100
years of oil shale mining in Estonia. Read more
USEA holds its 12th Annual State of The Energy Industry Forum
The United States Energy Association (USEA) held our US member
committee Annual State of the Energy Industry Forum, for the 12th
year
running. Designed to coincide with the U.S. State of the Union Address,
and widely regarded as one of USEA’s leading events, the forum held at
the National Press Club in Washington, DC, brought together leading
executives in the energy industry to exchange ideas and present
information on major cross-cutting issues facing the energy industry in

World Energy Council to launch 2016 Trilemma report at CEM7
As previously announced, the Council will be formally launching this year’s
World Energy Trilemma report at the seventh Clean Energy Ministerial
(CEM7) meeting next month in San Francisco on 1-2 June. The report will
be introduced by Enerst Monitz, United States Secretary of Energy, to the
close Ministerial meeting including China’s Minister of Science and
Technology Wan Gang; Maroš Šefčovič, Vice President for EU’s Energy
Union; and India’s Minister of Power, Coal & New & Renewable Energy
