SCIENCE,
TECHNOLOGY,
AND SOCIETY
WHAT IS STS
Science and technology studies, or
science, technology and society studies is
the study of how society, politics, and
culture affect scientific research and
technological innovation and how these, in
turn, affect society, politics and culture.
SCIENCE
From the Latin word “scientia”
(knowledge)
Any systematic
knowledge or practice.
The human attempt to understand
the natural world, with or without
concern for practical uses of
that knowledge.
NATURAL WORLD
SCIENCE tries to discover facts
and relationships and then tries to
create theories that make sense of
these facts and relationships.
TECHNOLOGY
CAME FROM TWO GREEK WORDS:
• “TECHNE” means skill, craftsmanchip and art
• “LOGOS” means reason
The human attempt to change the world.
•SCIENCE explores for the purpose
of knowing.
•Technology explores for the purpose
of making something useful from that
knowledge.
SOCIETY
A large group of people who live
together in an organized way. All the
people in a country, or in several
similar countries, can be referred as a
society.
CHAPTER 1
HISTORICAL ANTECEDENTS IN THE
COURSE OF SCIENCE AND
TECHNOLOGY
ANCIENT TIMES
PROBLEMS.
TRANSPORTATION AND NAVIGATION
COMMUNICATION
RECORD KEEPING
SECURITY AND PROTECTION
HEALTH
ARCHITECTS AND ENGINEERING
TRANSPORTATION is significant during
that time because people were trying to go
to places and discover new horizons. They
travelled to search food and find better
place locations for their settlements.
NAVIGATION assisted them to their
journeys to unfamiliar and strange areas in
the world. It allowed them to return home
after they discovered new places or
completed an important trade with another
group of people.
COMMUNICATION was also
essential in their endeavors to
discover and occupy new
places. They need a way to
communicate with the natives of
the areas they visited.
RECORD-KEEPING was
also important since they
needed to remember the
places they had been to and
document the trades they
made with each other. It was
also vital to keep records of
their history and culture.
WEAPONS and ARMORS were important as well in
the discovery new places or the establishment of new
alliances with other tribes. At the time, there was
always a risk of conflict when people met others with
other tribes.
CONSERVATION OF LIFE. The early people
might have been successful in harnessing the
rich resources that the world could provide, but
their survival posed a great problem. Different
illnesses and diseases, both natural and man-
made.
