4. What is a hot spot?
Hot spots are interactive zones on a
digital sign.
Hot spot actions include:
•Launch and run an application
•Launch a web portal
•Go to a desktop
•Shut down or reboot the computer
9. • Single touch displays support interactivity on the
screen using a single point of contact, such as a stylus
or a finger to display specific content. (This is also
referred to as “simple-touch gestures”)
• This is important because not all single touches on
this type of display can achieve gestures that require
one finger
• For example, the ability to “swipe” or “pan” is not
necessarily supported with a single touch display
Single Touch Interactivity
10. • Multi-touch refers to the ability of a surface (a trackpad
or touchscreen) to recognize the presence of more than
one, or more than two points of contact with the surface
• Multi-touch enables advanced functionality such as pinch
to zoom or panning/swiping
• Products such as smartphones and tablets feature multi-
touch functionality
• This is what your audience is expecting
Multi-Touch Interactivity

Single vs. multi-touch interactivity
Instant Source of Information
No looking around, trying to find someone to help you
This benefits the audience and staff
Unless you have an unprecedented amount of high volume traffic; you likely do not need full-time personnel to assist visitors
Multi-Purpose Display Use
You can literally double the visual real estate of your display by using hot spots
On a regular basis, you can use the display to show Dynamic Digital Signage Content that runs your event schedules, pr and marketing campaigns, weather, social media, news, live TV, streams, and anything relevant that capsures your audiences’ attention.
Then, you can incorporate hot spots to launch content “as needed” by your audience. This includes a variety of information – from Directories, Wayfinding with Maps and Turn by Turn directions to a mobile device, Real-Time Information or Promotional Content, even contests and more
Multi purpose = maximum return on investment
Make the most out of the display area by completely overriding content
A Hot spot is defined by an image that activates a function when selected.
Hot spot actions in AxisTV allow for several actions:
Launch and Run and application. This might include launching a video, such as a virtual tour, about us, an interview – perhaps with captions – a how to demo, such as, in a lobby area – how to dial an employee or what to do if you are making a delivery. Show photo slideshows. I have worked with numerous customers that have utilized the hot spot feature to show a floor map until they move forward with interactive wayfinding design.
Launch a web portal is simply opening a webpage that might show real-time shuttle mapping or dashboards. Display touchscreen food menus and queuing info. Use interactive games to entertain in waiting areas.
System administrators can use hidden buttons to shut down or reboot the player running your digital signage content
Let’s take a look at some of this content. This playback sample is for Western Iowa Tech Community College - using dynamic digital signage content, but using the display area for completely different content then when a user walks up to the display and touches the hotspot. They can find a room, see building information – they can even get their class schedule. Following a specified period in seconds or minutes of no activity, the content returns to its normal playback. You will also notice there is an “Exit Wayfinding” button built into this design, which immediately returns you to the default playback.
We just took a look at samples of touchscreen directories, wayfinding and queuing systems in our video samples, but there are more options using applications and content you already own,
Digital donor boards provide a way to honor patrons to your organization and possibly influence others to give. You can provide basic interaction that may display a directory and then a photo and bio of an individual to more advanced selection options and detailed information. This reduces cost associated with plaques and allows better use of your wall space!
Imagine if you have a display that shows today’s menu on the left and let’s you build a sandwich on the right side of the display – this is one possibility with an interactive menu application.
Incorporating real-time interactive shuttle and bus maps into your DS provides useful information and can increase safety and comfort by allowing riders to wait indoors for their ride. We provide more detail on how you can allow users to interact with this type of map using single or multi-touch display technology in the whitepaper. Note: your digital signage content / design needs to incorporate a way for the viewer to take the information in front of them – with them. QR Tags are a great way to make the content mobile.
Room management, or office hoteling is an excellent use for managing shared workspace or meeting rooms – and this also ties to something you most likely already own - scheduling software (like Microsoft Exchange or EMS).
This might be a simple interactive application that allows people to book rooms from a central point, or more advanced - a touchscreen map with the option to instantly book a room simply by tapping it on the display.
A custom hoteling and wayfinding design can be fed by your central scheduling application so that available and busy rooms appear in different colors on the map. This is much more intuitive for people – they can see what’s available on a single screen, rather than scrolling through your booking system’s pages, which improves the user experience.
Building Dashboard® Kiosk™ from Lucid Design Group lets your staff, students and visitors view energy and water use information on touchscreen displays by tying into your building management application.
This can truly impact human behavior and if you check out the News page on Lucid’s website (under references) – you will see just how well this works.
This is one of my favorite creative projects – simply because of the variety of information for just about any audience.

The touchscreen enables users to interact directly with what is displayed (no need for additional hardware).
If you have already purchased interactive displays, you still want to confirm the capabilities of the hardware you have purchased before you begin designing interactive content. Does your interactive hardware support simple/single touch or multi-touch?

Single touch displays support interactivity on the screen using a single point of contact, such as a stylus or a finger to display specific content.
