INTRODUCTION
 It is a mind-to-movement system that allows a
quadripligic man to control a computer using
his thoughts
 This system is to help those who have lost
control of their limbs , or any other body
functions to operate various gadgets such as
TV, computer , lights etc
 It monitors brain activity in the patient and
converts the intention of user into computer
commands
HISTORY
 After 10 years of study and research, Brain
gate system was developed by the bio-tech
company Cyberkinetics in 2003 with the
department of Neuroscience at Brown
University
 At first it is implemented on rats then monkeys
and after no complication on human beings
What is Brain gate
Technology
 Brain gate is a neuroprosthetic device that
converts brain activity into computer
commands
 Brain gate is an electrode chip implemented
in the brain which contains an internal signal
sensor and external processor that converts
neural signals into an output siganal
Objectives
 The main objective of the Brain Gate
program is to develop a fast and reliable
connection between the brain of a
severely disabled person and a personal
computer
 The first allow a human to control his
surrounding environment using his mind.
Fig . Components of brain gate system
Components
 The Neuro chip
 The connector
 The converter
 The computer
The Neuro chip
 A 4-millimeter square silicon chip
studded with 100 hair-thin
microelectrodes is embedded in the
primary mortar cortex the region of the
brain responsible for controlling
movement
The connector
 The connector is attached to the skull of
the patient and it forwards the signals to
the converter which are received by the
clip
The Converter
 The signal travels to an amplifier where it
is converted to digital data
 The electro encephalo gram is responsible
for converting brain signal into digital
signal and digital to brain signal
The computer
 The computer translates brain activity and
creates the communication output using
custom decoding software
Brain Gate Research
 Brain Gate with rat
 Brain Gate with Monkey
 Brain Gate with Human
fig. Brain gate research on rat
Brain Gate with Rat
 At first rats were implanted with silicon
chip
 Signals recorded from the cerebral
cortex of rat to operate computer to
carry out the movement
 The chip is attached in brain of rat and
it’s thinking to eat food infront of it
Fig. Brain gate research on monkey
Brain Gate with Monkey
 Some of the researchers at the
university had demonstrated on a
monkey that can feed itself with a
robotic arm simply by using signals from
its brain
 Using its mind the monkey was able to
control a cursor on a computer monitor
through brain gate
Fig . Brain gate research on human
Brain Gate with Human
 Mathew-Nagel is the first person to use
the brain computer interface
 He had a severe spinal injury ,and he is
not able to move his arms and legs
 After the experiment he can open emails
and he can draw shapes by using a
paint program on the computer
Working
 It consists of a sensor, cable,
pedestal and a cart
 The sensor is implanted in brains
percental gyrus
 A tiny wire connects the pedestal
to a computer
 A cable connects the pedestal to a
computer
 The sensor senses the electrical
signals and passes to pedestal
 Pedestal passes this signal to
computer
 Computer translates the signal into
communication output
 It allows a person to move a cursor
on a computer
Advantages
 It allows disabled persons to work with
computers
 Turn on or off the lights
 Watch and control television
 Locking or unlocking the doors
Disadvantages
 It is very expensive
 Risky surgery
 It is not wireless
 Difficult to read the signal
Applications
 Military uses
 Bioengineering
 Artificial vision
 In evaluating the machine learning
algorithms
 In multimedia communication
Conclusion
 According to Cyberkinetics two patients
have been implanted with the brain gate
system
 It has proved that people can use actually
use this system to switch a television and to
control volume also
 All of these developing technologies are
sure to help millions of people in world
