Back on My Feet Models and Metrics – A Recommendation
Vic Acosta
Executive Director, Back on My Feet Boston
Back on My Feet (BoMF) has a significant impact on at-risk and homeless populations. The correlation of
those outcomes with the running/socialization aspect of the BoMF program is identified through the general
theory of self-efficacy and self actualization which lead to positive outcomes. Associated with these outcomes
is significant community impact in terms of overall populations and resource allocation.
Back on My Feet delivers the following to at-risk and populations experiencing homelessness which from now
on I will define as “Customer”:
 Non invasive and non judgmental socialization through a team environment.
 A non-clinical support mechanism through the team environment.
 Entry and/or return to the running community
 The ability to identify as an athlete/runner
 Running gear
 Participation in and/or access to social activities
 Physical exercise with the option of progressive build up to endurance training
 Non clinical and secondary goal setting
 Access to financial assistance
 A secondary and/or primary path to services within the at-risk and homeless eco systems.
The outcomes of delivering this service are variable given that the initial conditions are extremely variable as
well. CO will be used for the initial condition a customer enters the program. The only conditions placed on
this initial state are the customer is not a level 3 sex offender and is sober/clean at the time of participation on
the team. The primary outcomes from the BoMF deliverables are then deltas from that initial state:
 CS – Change in ability to socialize. (observable and self reporting)
  CR – Change in running/exercise regimen (observable and tracked)
  CRACE – Participation in races/running activities outside standard program.
 CST – Stabilization and/or lack of relapse over specified time (observed)

  CST – Variability of Stability from non-BoMF population (against a standard.)
  CPH – Change in physical health parameters (measured)
  CPY – Change in emotional/psychological outlook (self reporting)
  CSR– Change in access of services (self reporting, observable)
  CETH – Change in access of employment, training, education, and housing services (observable and
self reported)
  CE – Change in status of employment (positive slope only: unemployed to part time to full)
  CTE – Change in status of training and education (positive slope only.)
  CH – Change in housing status (positive slope only - observable and tracked)
 CH – Stability of Housing (self reported and observed)
  CF – Change in family/relationship status (self reported)
  CC – Change in judicial standing (self reported – positive slope only)
The long term intent is to create a model based on these parametric models to establish both the efficacy of
the BoMF approach and the significant differentiation in rehabilitative approaches. From these parametric
measures a number of metrics can be determined. To bound this discussion and recommendation I have put
forth the following metrics:
· CI - Community Impact per BoMF Program Investment measured in dollars ( CE,  CTE,  CH,  CF,
CC)
· Parametric Health Improvement measured in increased physical and psychological deltas.
· Increased Partner Efficacy measured in comparative terms i.e. improved program efficiency of a
partner due to Back on My Feet.
· SEO - Self Efficacy Outcomes measured in increased positive movement and outcomes (education,
job training, employment, homed.) This is not a comparative figure. (CS,  CR,  CRACE, CST.  CPH, 
CPY,  CSR,  CETH)
The Golden Measure
The ability to equate Community Impact in terms of fiscal outcomes (CI) with Self Efficacy Outcomes (SEO) is
the golden measure BoMF must and can demonstrate i.e. CI(SEO) – CI as a function of SEO.

Community Impact Models
Back on My Feet Boston has used a Strategic Growth Plan approach to demonstrate Community Impact (CI) to
investors. This model uses the following baseline and data:
According to the Pine Street Inn and the Massachusetts Housing and Shelter Alliance studies on homeless costs
the State saves $9,950 per individual when permanently housed but this does not take into account case
management, health care costs, emergency hospital services, and accompanying services required to sustain a
person in a homeless state. Estimates made by the Interagency Council on Homelessness estimates the cost
closer to $30,000 to $150,000 depending on relapse cycles, involvement of the judicial system, and
recovery/rehabilitation services. For the purposes of this estimate Back on My Feet will use the Boston
Foundation's estimate of $42,000 and reserves the right to change based on the most current data.
Using the parameters identified above:
Community Impact ( CE,  CTE,  CH,  CF, CC) = Cost Impact from moving/assisting moving one
individual out of the eco system or preventing a return tothe eco system.
A sample version of this model and a corresponding reporting mechanism is as follows. The numbers are real
and represent Back on My Feet Boston in 2010.
CommunityImpact
(Employed+Housing) $1,915,200
Employed/ EnteringEmployment 32
PermanentHousing 14
EnteredJob Training/Education 34
At-Risk and ShelterResidentsServed 76
VolunteersEducated/Engaged 200
Investment $294,000
Community Impact (CI) in this model does not represent all costs savings to the community as it does not
include housing stability. The model simply uses (employed + housed)*$42,000 to create an outcome of
$1,915,200 community impact. The model requires several adjustments including allowance for BoMF not

operating in a vacuum but as a partnership. The CI should be adjusted to 50% to 65% of total to show BoMF’s
as of yet unverified increased efficacy of programs participation.
Self Efficacy Outcome Models
The Back on My Feet effect is unique and disruptive technology which combines the tools of passive
rehabilitation, self actualization, and socialization with physical conditioning. The tools for measuring the
parameters which define self efficacy (CS,  CR,  CRACE, CST.  CPH, CPY,  CSR,  CETH) are well defined and used
in a number of programs (Dreamfar High School Marathon, Boy’s and Girl’s Clubs, etc.) and rely on
observation and self reporting. To a large extent BoMF has collected qualitative data in terms of self reporting
and team participation. Equating that existing data will only serve to verify the physical and psychological
outcomes of running and socialization long proven in countless studies. The secondary aspect of affecting
greater engagement in forward movement and/or stability is the ground breaking work the organization
requires.
Self Efficacy Outcome (SEO) = SEO (CS,  CR,  CRACE, CST.  CPH,  CPY,  CSR,  CETH) = either a negative or positive
slope measured between entrance to the program plus an initial condition (CO) identifying the status of the
individual and the baseline from which to measure. A three point slope (alpha slope) identified as incept, mid
point, and exit can be used for existing legacy data.
Summary
The use of these two metrics will affect the business model fundamentally. The metrics and models are
centered and focused on the “intangibles” of the individual yet they are based on movement and outcomes.
The models assume BoMF is part of an eco system but strongly identify the unique and specific effects of the
program versus others. And most fundamentally it changes this non-profit from a funder base to an investor
one requiring significant investor reporting and data capture. But proving the direct correlations between the
two identified metrics CI and SEO in this recommendation could be the baseline which statistically bear out
Anne’s initial genius and the faith of our investors, staff, volunteers, and customers.
