3.  In 80’s MS-DOS was the dominant OS for PC.
 Mac was better ,but expensive.
 UNIX was much better ,but much more
expensive.
 People were looking for a UNIX based system
,which was cheaper ,user friendly & that run
on PC.
• MS-DOS :Microsoft’s Disk Operating System.
• OS :Operating System.
• PC :Personal Computer.
• Mac :Macintosh.
• UNIX :UNiplxed Information & Computer System.

4. It was established by “Richard Stallman”.

5. GNU =‘GNU is Not UNIX’.
Aim to develop a complete UNIX like OS
,which is free for copying & modifications.
“Richard Stallman” established
“The Free Software Foundation” ,to
support GNU Project.
“RedHat(developed for business
Market & its advanced server) ,
SuSE(Software und System- Entwicklung) ,
Slackware(Oldest distributor)”.

6. A famous professor ,Andrew Tanenbaum
,developed “MINIX” ,a simplified version of
“UNIX” ,but for no commercial intentions.
A student at Helsinki University ,
called “Linus Tovalds” ,developed the
first Linux Kernel version 0.0.1.

7.  Linux is an open source OS that was initially
developed for Intel x86 processors .It has
however been ported to other platforms.
 The Linux Kernel was created by Linux Tovalds.
 The Linux Kernel is the brain of any GNU/Linux
OS. The Kernel glues both applications &
hardware together.

9.  Generally ,a Linux system has two operatable
mode:
1. Shell.
2. X Server.

10. i. Open-Source.
ii. Virus-Free.
iii. Free.
iv. TCP/IP Networking.
v. Support for running web servers ,such as
Apache ,to run protocols like FTP.
vi. Customizable.
vii. Well documented.
viii. Graphical.
