ESC Working Group Gender on Crime and Justice Conference –Amsterdam 2018
After an inspiring mini-conference of the ESC Working Group Gender Crime and Justice in La
Coruna 2017, with a focus on Crime and Justice in a Changing Europe., we decided to organize a
second conference, which will be hosted in Amsterdam.
In a constantly changing Europe, violence is still present within and between regions, institutions,
individuals etc., and within this context the relation between gender and violence is a complex one.
To reduce violence, it is important to unravel the mechanisms underneath this relationship.
Therefore the theme of the mini-conference will be Gender and Violence.
The ESC Working Group GCJ Conference is organized by the VU University Amsterdam (Department
of Criminal Law and Criminology), Applied University Avans, University of Groningen, European
Society of Criminology and University of Cambridge.
Theme of the conference: Gender and Violence
Date: Monday 23 and Tuesday 24 April 2018
Location: VU University, Amsterdam
Local organizing committee: Anne-Marie Slotboom, Martina Althoff, Janine Jansen,
ESC Working Group support: Michele Burman and Loraine Gelsthorpe
The local organizing committee would like to suggest 5-6 different panels over the two days, with
the following themes:
1) gendered forms of violence
2) transgender, male and female victimization and perpetration
3) (trans)gender violence in prison
4) gendered pathways of crime and violence
5) social reaction on and public discourse of gendered violence
6) migration, culture and violence
If you are interested in attending and/or would like to give a paper (15-20 minutes duration)
around the theme Gender and Violence please send title and abstract of the presentation for the
conference to Anne-Marie Slotboom (m.slotboom@vu.nl).
