3. THEORY APPLIED
“Richard Florida: Urban Innovation”
▪ One of the foremost experts in the world on urban innovation and smart cities
is Richard Florida (http://www.creativeclass.com/richard florida).
▪ He rose to fame in 2002 after the release of his significant and divisive book
"The Rise of the Creative Class." ( http://www.creativeclass.com/richard
florida/books/the rise of the creative c lass )
▪ In this book, Florida explains that in addition to the need for future professional
workers to be more inventive and creative, these workers will also migrate to
urban areas more frequently, where they will find quality of life amenities,
leisure activities, and cultural offerings in addition to economic "clusters" of
creative businesses. These urban areas will then adapt to meet the needs of
these "creative professional workers."
4. ▪ Cities face new, complicated social, environmental, economic, cultural, and
technological changes every day.
▪ Finding novel solutions to these problems and meeting citizens' wants is
what innovation is all about.
▪ An Urban Redevelopment Plan (URP) is designed to give the city the tools
it needs to meet urban improvement needs.
▪ The URP is intended to assist the city in developing the public and private
partnerships necessary to promote redevelopment and regeneration
within specific urban districts.
URBAN INNOVATION & URBAN REDEVELOPMENT
6. ➢Title of the Plan - Development plan for urban development area of Kurunegala.
➢Proposed area - Kurunegala Municipal Council Area
➢Conducted by - Urban Development Authority (UDA), Sri Lanka
➢Time Period - 2006- 2015
DEVELOPMENT PLAN - KURUNEGALA
8. ▪ The 10.53 sq. km. Kurunegala Municipal Council territory.
▪ The settlement lies close to the districts of Kandy and Matale in the central highland,
between 7.20 and 7.28 north latitude and 80.21 and 80.23 east longitude.
▪ The town region experiences average annual precipitation of 1000–1500 mm and
average daily temperatures of 25–35 °C.
▪ Due to the favorable environmental conditions, rice and coconut agriculture as well
as other minor crops like cinnamon, pepper, cocoa, coffee, and nutmeg have become
increasingly popular.
MAP OF KURUNEGALA (Contd.)
10. As shown in several locations of Sri Lanka, Kurunegala town is regarded as a key
intersection.
▪ Colombo - Kurunegala - Trincomalee Road
▪ Colombo - Kurunegala - Anuradhapura Road
▪ Kurunegala - Puttalam Road
▪ Kurunegala - Negombo Road
▪ Kurunegala - Kandy Road
▪ Colombo, Kurunegala, Anuradhapura Railway
ROAD NETWORK (Contd.)
11. ▪ The city has a lot of traffic.
▪ To Reduce the Number of Accidents
▪ Poor traffic control, especially in front of important schools
▪ Insufficient parking spaces
▪ Roads that are too small to make turns at signal lights
▪ There are still gravel roads and earth drains.
▪ The absence of pavement on the roadways
▪ Several major roads are still being built.
▪ Insufficient expertise in processing waste
WHY ROAD NETWORK SHOULD BE DEVELOPED?
12. Road Development
Strength
• Political support
• The availability of labor resources are
available.
• Access to Subject Knowledge
Accommodations and leisure options
• Kurunegala serves as a hub to link
North and South
Weaknesses
• Attitudes of citizens about the development
of cities that have an impact on culture
• Fears that prevent people from accepting
change
Opportunities
• Central Express, a future highway project
• No railroad tracks go through the city
• Present-day Road System
Threats
• A shift in the political parties
• Selecting reputable Contractors
• Budget-related corruption
SWOT ANALYSIS
13. Step 1: Decide if the development will be in a city or a rural area.
Step 2: Ensure a steady flow of cash
Step 3: Ensure a steady supply of water
Step 4: Consider available positions
Step 5: Don't isolate locals.
Step 6, create a master strategy.
Step 7: Include transportation
Step 8: Take into account accessible parking options
Step 9: Implement recycling procedures to make waste management smart.
The final step is to maximize connectedness and improve people’s quality of life.
Finally, Give it a name, of course!
