Questions can broadly be divided into 2 kinds.

Framing questions
Questions can be framed in two ways:
A] ‘Wh’ Questions B] ‘Yes/No’ Questions
When a sentence conveys factual
information about time, place, manner, or
reason, we can frame questions for them
using various question words such as,
This are the most basic types of questions
and therein lies their importance. These
questions are so called simply because
they have ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers.
Framing of ‘Wh’ Questions:
1. The smallest state in India is Goa.
Which is the smallest state in India?
2. Ali went to a London for a holiday.
Why did Ali go to London?
3. She saw a thief leaving the neighboring house.
What did she see?
4. The train will arrive at 7:15 a.m.
When will the train arrive?
5. The man picked up his luggage from the conveyer belt and walk away.
Where did the man pick up his luggage from?
Framing of ‘Yes/No’ Questions
Yes/No questions generally use two forms:
1. Be 2. Do/Does
Be + Subject + Adjective /Noun
Are you

not.
Do/Does + Subject + Verb
Do you play

Yes, I do. No, I
don’t.

Question tag
• There are 24 ‘special verbs’ or ‘Finites’.
These verbs are also known as ‘Helping
verbs’ or ‘Auxiliaries’.
• These auxiliaries are mainly used in
Question Tags and Short Responses.
• During a conversation, it is very common
to make statements and immediately ask
the listener to confirm what was said. Such
a short question added to a statement is
called a ‘Question tag’.
