Motivation: Regional-Scale Waveform Inversion (3D)
1.  Structure matters.
2.  Imaging is enhanced by the full waveform. Valuable information, due
to topography, arrives late after the direct waves.
3.  How can we quantify the effect of topography at these periods of
interest (T > 2 s)?

Conclusion
•  Numerical resolution is an essential part of this study.
•  Topography affects seismic waves, especially surfaces waves.
•  Nodal directions experience strong topographic effect.
•  Station maps show some systematic topographic effect.
•  In 1D model, the change in seismograms includes topographic and structure effect.
•  It remains unclear how to determine the topographic effect within observed seismograms.
•  Depending on the scope of your study, topography should be taken into account (i.e., the
frequency content of seismograms and the length scale of topographic variations).
Future Work
•  Systematic study: how do source mechanism and depth influence the topographic effect?
•  Adding realistic error.
•  Topographic effect for other interests (plane wave source for teleseismic wavefield study.)
•  Numerical simulation with 3D model, and comparison with real data.
•  Quantification of topography on other choices of misfit function (e.g time frequency

Conclusion •  Numerical resolution is an essential part of this study. •  Topography affects seismic waves, especially surfaces waves. •  Nodal directions experience strong topographic effect. •  Station maps show some systematic topographic effect. •  In 1D model, the change in seismograms includes topographic and structure effect. •  It remains unclear how to determine the topographic effect within observed seismograms. •  Depending on the scope of your study, topography should be taken into account (i.e., the frequency content of seismograms and the length scale of topographic variations). Future Work •  Systematic study: how do source mechanism and depth influence the topographic effect? •  Adding realistic error. •  Topographic effect for other interests (plane wave source for teleseismic wavefield study.) •  Numerical simulation with 3D model, and comparison with real data. •  Quantification of topography on other choices of misfit function (e.g time frequency Kristekova et al. 2006)
