3. Prototyping is…
“Bringing life to static designs. Also
enhancing communication of ideas”
“Making an idea tangible and feasible
enough that helps people
communicate the idea and bring them
on the same page”
“A tool used to test and validate a
concept before significant investment
of time, money & effort is made”
“Prototyping means building a sample
of an idea in order to proof a concept
and/or test and validate”
“Prototyping makes
me a better designer”
“If a picture is worth 1000 words, a
prototype is worth 1000 seminars” -
IDEO
4. Prototyping is… a state of mind
Doing design, not only talking about design
Being ready to be proven wrong
A craft for all designers, but not only for designers
6. Onboarding passengers to WiFi portal
/ Testing
/ Discussion between teams & technicians
Animations for seat map
in app
/ Discussion between designers
/ Made during design review
Paper prototyping
7. Audiobooks in app
/ Discussion between devs
/ Discussion between
designers
Basic prototyping / Sketch, InVision, Axure
Payment methods in
app
/ User testing
/ Discussion between teams
/ Discussion between designers
and devs
8. Aurinkomatkat Kaupunkiloma
/ Qualitative user testing
/ Communication between the team, business & stakeholders
Complex prototyping / Axure
Aurinkomatkat OmaLoma
/ Communication within the team
/ Tool for developers
9. Complex prototyping / Miscellaneous
From app to
onboard WiFi
portal
/ Technical POC and
possibilities
/ Discussion between
teams
/ Testing
Payment form
/ Communicating wishes
towards external stakeholder
/ Communication within team
/ Dev + designer collaboration
/ Evaluation future efforts
Doing design instead of talking about design (Frontiers of Design https://frontiersfilm.com , “there’s been too much talking about design, too little doing design”, “craftsmanship”)
Being ready to proven wrong - fear of doing an actual prototype since it might prove I’m wrong even before I show it to anyone… especially as young designer…
Note – talking from designer’s point of view
Designers should be craftsman prototypers - or which field of design wouldn’t need prototypes (or the mentality of prototyping) one way or the other?
Finnair.com / Flight search, booking, managing existing bookings, managing Finnair Plus profiles, destination information, campaigns…
Payment / Payment flow
In-flight / “Every flight is different”, going to and controlling details isn’t as beneficial as giving flexibility in a wide range of situations
Mobile app & Aurinkomatkat app / Focused on viewing and editing existing booking and trip, those elements that are in app will go to
Aurinkomatkat / Trip search, flights, hotels, extra services, booking, managing existing bookings, campaigns…
When does it make sense nowadays? Animations, transitions, ”one-offs”
WiFi stickers one prototype of ideation around “how to onboard passengers to Nordic Sky”.
Lot of technical limitations when it comes to capture portals etc.
Discussion between technical maintenance, cabin design team, etc.
There’s benefits of making it really sketchy, for expectation management
Nowadays easy to prototype basic A-B-C flows with Sketch prototyping
Especially with design system
Benefit of getting ”quick and dirty” protos that are easily shared quickly, for testing etc.
Kaupunkilomat
From 0% to 100% success to find Kaupunkiloma
Selecting flight ticket / with Fare class or with only one Fare class
Business decision for simplified product
300% increase in sales with Kaupunkiloma
OmaLoma – will be launched next week, managing your holiday after booking and during the trip
Dynamic view, building the front page with different variables
When does this make sense?
Not as a specially made tool for developers it seems…
as they usually come up with faster ways that are more suitable for their workflow
Nordic Sky:
POC as prototype, since the one you see right now is only cosmetic
We knew it could be done, but didn’t know all the technical limitations involved
Now POC/prototype is maturing to an actual feature
Payment:
Help from a developer to do it (java script)
Developers can help and join making prototypes, as the voice of reason as well as technically
In this case, would’ve been easier with just code...
Testing out which method makes sense – javascript+html or Axure (with javascript)
Few words about our in-house design team:
Turns 2 years old tomorrow!
Started with 5, now already 13 and few additions coming soon
Old pictures… but one from our first ever meeting!
