3. Incentive Program
FrugalDiner | 3
Background
FrugalDiner is an incentive everyone can benefit from. The benefits of FrugalDiner are spending less money, losing weight,
increased social activities, and acquire better cooking skills. FrugalDiner is a goal we can all choose to work forward too. The
average American eats out more than two times per week and averaging about 15 dollars per meal. The total amount is
equal to about 120 dollars a month that is if you are only paying for yourself. Eating out has resulted in an increase in 7% fat
consumption of total calories. Eating out also has more sodium than home cooked meals approximately 75% more. Eating
out also provides a greater increase in total calories an extra 239 calories per meal.
Research
FrugalDiner will be a new monthly incentive run here at weber. The research supporting frugaldiner has been conducted for
years examining the quality of food received from eating out. Most research shows that eating out will have less nutrient
dense qualities, a higher concentration of saturated fat, a higher concentration of salt, and more calories. A recent study
showed the average amount time eating out compared to eating home cooked meals is up to 43%.

We can send out the Frugaldiner flyers. Mail employee how to use FrugalDiner and why it would be beneficial.
Program Outline
Track your meals for 20 days during the month. All meals during those days must be home cooked, or cooked at a friend’s
home. If you eat anything from a convenience store, vending machine, or coffee shop, you cannot count that day!
Exceptions to FrugalDiner include business meals and family celebration meals.
Supplies
Provide a weekly meal calendar to help plan and prepare what they are eating for the day. Planning your meals for the
week can help avoid having to go out to eat.
4. Incentive Program
FrugalDiner | 4
Implementation
Since this was the first time we have implemented this program, we had an amazing turn out. We have 79 participants in
Frugal Dining challenge. Each employee taking advantage of employee wellness rewards was emailed a sign up form for
Frugal Dining challenge. Participants were also able to sign up for challenge through employee wellness website.
Outcome
Employees appeared to enjoy the challenge. Some individuals did struggle participating the full 20 days of frugal dining, but
the challenge is good to develop healthy life changes. Each participant who mails back the monthly challenge results will
receive participation points. Participation points can be used to get employee wellness gear.
Evaluation
Follow-Up Email
Provided an evaluation form with 9 questions based on overall experience, results, what they enjoyed, least, and if any
additional ideas or suggestions to the program.
Evaluation form will be sent once weekly meal planner is returned.
Participant Response
Follow up email is to motivate all participants to keep up with frugal dining. Each frugal dining tracking sheet appears to
have more healthy food choices than what employees have previously suggested.
Summary
The program was overall successful. Each participant described being pushed to eat healthier and plan meals ahead. I would
run the program again. If I was to run the program again, I would have them track how much they spend on eating out the
month prior. Having knowledge on how much you spend prior might get more participation in frugal dining challenge.
Appendix
Each participant was emailed Frugal Dining weekly meal tracker.
