OPENING KICK
West Texas A&M returns to the friendly confines of
Buffalo Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 19, when they host No.
25 Angelo State in a Lone Star Conference showdown.
Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
FIVE KEY STORYLINES
The Buffs overcame a 10-point halftime deficit for a second
time under Hunter Hughes in their 14-10 victory over UT
Permian Basin. Jordan Johnson scored both touchdowns
for WT as they improved to 2-11 under Hughes when
trailing by 10 or more points at halftime.
Following his 223-yard performance against the Falcons,
Nick Gerber became the first Buff quarterback to throw
for over 200 yards in three consecutive games for the first
time since 2016. The redshirt sophomore has completed
102-of-173 passes for 1,143 and eight touchdowns with
three interceptions through his first career six starts. He
has completed a pass to 14 different receivers with Chase
Sojka, Juwan McCall, J. Johnson, Semaj Mitchell and
Jamaal Hamilton all pulling it 10-plus receptions.
Gerber has played behind an offensive line that hasn’t
allowed a sack since Week 2 against William Jewell
ranking them first in the nation in sacks allowed.
Saturday’s contest will be a tough test for the Buffs as they
face off against an ASU team that is averaging an LSC-
high 2.83 sacks per game.
J. Johnson rushed for his team-high sixth touchdown
on Saturday in Odessa. The senior swiss army knife has
rushed for at least one touchdown in five of six games
and ranks 28th in the nation and fourth in the LSC in the
category. He also pulled in 16 receptions, three short of
his career-high 19 set back in 2017 when he led the team
in receiving.
Frank Honang recorded a career-high 16 tackles in WT’s
14-10 victory over UTPB. The senior linebacker now ranks
sixth in the nation and third in the LSC with 71 tackles. He
has recorded 10 or more tackles in five of his six starts
this season for 6.5 tackles for loss and two force fumbles.
Fellow linebacker Hayden Dennis ranks 10th nationally
and fifth in the conference with his 68 tackles.
SCOUTING ANGELO STATE
Angelo State are 5-1 on the season and 3-1 in Lone Star
Conference play after a 31-14 victory over Western New
Mexico at Legrand Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The
win put the Rams back in the American Football Coaches
Association (AFCA) Top 25 for the second time this
season.
The Rams offensive attack is led by senior quarterback
Payne Sullins, who has completed 107-of-179 passes
for 1,452 yards and 13 touchdowns. He has thrown for
over 200 yards in five games this season including a
season-high 370 and four touchdowns against Texas A&M-
Kingsville. Kike Chism and Lawson Ayo are Sullins’ top
targets as the duo has combined for 46 receptions for 925
yards and nine touchdowns.
Lloyd Howard is the leading rusher fo the Rams with 552
yards and five touchdowns on 96 carries. Daven Manning
has also seen time in the backfield with 32 carries for 163
yards and two scores.

points per game, as Western Oregon and Western New
Mexico are the only teams to score more than 14 points.
Hunter Kyle is the leading tackler for the Rams with 42
including 4.5 tackles for loss while Derrick Dickers has a
team-high 3.0 sacks.
A LOOK AT THE SERIES

in Canyon. The Buffs have won 10 of the last 13 matchups
including a 26-18 victory in San Angelo last year. WT

passing yards and four touchdowns from Dustin Vaughan.

finished with their first winning record in three
years at 6-5 which included a four-game winning
streak and a win over a Top 25 opponent for
the second consecutive season. The Buffs were
named Dave Campbell’s Team of the Week

Washington in the Wildcats first-ever night game
at Tom-linson Stadium in Ellensburg, Washington
where Duke Carter IV ran for a career-high 259
yards and a touchdown.
Under Hughes, Tobias Harris was named the
Lone Star Conference Freshman of the Year after

per game, combined kick return yards and punt
return touchdowns. Carter IV, Eric Collins and
Travis Vornkahl all earned 2nd Team All-LSC
honors while John Cummings earned D2CCA
2nd Team All-American honors along with being
named a Google Cloud Academic All-American.
In 2017, Hughes and the Buffs won his first game
of his WT career with a thrilling 24-21 victory at
Kimbrough Memorial Stadium over his former
school Colorado State-Pueblo as the Thunder-
Wolves were ranked No. 7 nationally entering the
game. Hughes went 3-8 in his inaugural season
and had eight players named to the all-confer-
ence team, with two being selected to the LSC
All-Academic Team and senior Dillon Vaughan

years as the defensive coordinator at Colorado
State University-Pueblo and was the defensive
mastermind behind the ThunderWolves’ 13-0
shutout of then-No. 1 Minnesota State in the 2014
NCAA Division II National Championship, which
handed CSU-Pueblo its first NCAA national title
in school history. Hughes was hired in 2007
prior to the first season of CSUP football in 2008
to help build the inaugural class.
Since the 2008 season, Hughes has consistent-
ly put defenses on the field that not only lead
the Rocky Mountain Athletic Confer-ence, but
rank among the top units in the nation. He was
named Football FootballScoop.com Division
II Coordinator of the Year finalist in 2014 and
guided the ThunderWolves’ defense that lead
all of Division II in scoring defense (12.8 points
allowed per game), passes intercepted (29),
defensive touchdowns (7) and turnovers gained

game to finish fourth nationally and CSUP ranked
13th in total defense allowing just 296.8 yards
per game.

defense has produced 14 All-Americas and 67
All-RMAC performers.
Hughes and the ThunderWolves’ defense
continued to dominate in 2015 as he helped
guide the team to its third appearance in the
NCAA Quarterfinals in the previous four seasons.
CSUP finished top 20 nationally in nine different
defensive categories, which included third in
scoring defense (15.8 ppg) and passes intercept-
ed (24). The ThunderWolves also were 10th in
rushing defense (94.6 ypg) and 11th in turnovers
gained (31).
One of the most decorated Division II coordina-
tors in the nation, Hughes earned FootballScoop.
com Division II Coordinator of the Year in 2011 as
the ThunderWolves went 11-0 in the regular sea-
son. CSUP allowed a national-best 10.33 points
per game and tallied 26 interceptions which also
was tops in Division II.
In the first four years Hughes was at CSUP, the
ThunderWolves finished in the top 25 nationally
in points allowed three times includ-ing ninth
in 2010. In 2008, Hughes squad allowed the
37th-fewest points in the nation during the pro-
gram’s first season of competi-tion.
Prior to CSUP, Hughes quickly rose through
the coaching ranks as he was on staff at two of
the most prestigious Division I programs in the
country – University of Colorado and University
of Tennessee.
While at Colorado, Hughes was a defensive
graduate assistant from 2003-2006, assisting in
coaching various defensive positions, as well as
recruiting. At Tennessee, he served as a defen-
sive graduate assistant focusing on linebackers
and defensive backs in the fall of 2006 and
spring of 2007.
Hughes graduated from Middle Tennessee State
in 1991 and earned a master’s degree from MTSU
in 2001.
