2. 1.First Access of the internet in the country
-Corporations such as Intel, Motorola and Texas
Instruments used the internet to contact their
companies back in America in the years 1991-
1993
2. PLDT & Philcom Internet Stations
-accessing e-mail using AT&T Mailwas brought
by PLDT and PIS via American CampuServe and
The E-mail Company as their internet service
providers
3. 3. Dr. William Torres the Grandfather
-Dr. Torres experienced the internet in America
and planned on applying this to the country
-He asked DOST to help him in his project,
PhilNet Phase I
4. PhilNet Phase I
-DOST members from UP Diliman and Los Banos,
ADMU and DLSU connected an academic
internet connection in Ateneo with Australia’s
Victoria University
4. 5. PhilNet Phase 2
-PhilNet Phase I became too expensive which
encouraged DOST in creating a new phase
-DOST hired Industrial Research Foundation to
head the second phase
-This phase was given a budget of 12.5 million
pesos
-IRF appointed their member, Dr. Rodolfo
Villarica to administer the project
5. 6. Dr. Rodolfo Villarica the Father
-several universities such as UPD, ADMU, DLSU,
and University of San Carlos in Cebu was given a
64kbps internet access to United States on March
29, 1994
-After, DOST, IRF, other universities, and other
companies were given access as well
6. 7. PHNet
-PhilNet or now known as PHNet, then included
more that 50 other organizations to join
8. 1995 Public Telecommunications Act of the
Philippines
-Internet Business Companies emerged charging
for their access
