This document outlines Tory Broytman's research and product development for a virtual taste technology called TechTaste. It identifies potential user personas of a diabetic woman and unhealthy engineer who want to taste foods without health consequences. The branding process is described, with the name TechTaste chosen to represent using technology to create flavor on the tongue. Research sources discuss how a digital device can recreate tastes through electrical and thermal stimulation of the tongue.

Editor's Notes
Title of article, ‘Are you ready for virtual taste?’
-does the world have a need for this technology
-what does this virtual taste entail
-how can we put it into practice
-taste is big part of human’s lives
-it evokes emotion, satisfies desires and is expressive
-Dr. Nimesha, a research fellow at National University of Singapore says that there’s a way to enjoy ‘taste’ through a digital gadget
-why choose a digital method as opposed to chemical?
-chemicals are unrealistic bc they’re difficult to store and manipulate
-Digital is the way to go…
-by actuating the tongue through electrical and thermal stimulations, one can create different tastes
Technology:
-Digital taste interface (control system)
2 parts
- Control module- formulate different electrical and thermal stimuli
-tongue interface- two silver electrodes worn on tongue
-experimental results suggest sourness and saltiness are the main sensations that are evoked
-however there is evidence of sweet and bitter sensations too
Diabetic patients can enjoy sweet tastes without blood sugar levels sky rocketing
Cancer patients who are going through chemo therapy have dulled taste senses, so digital taste can appease their desire for taste
As part of recovery service, digital taste can increase patient morale by giving them the desired taste they crave without any harm
