1. Different Roles Within a Record Label
Director of Artists and repertoire: (Director of A&R) finds new artists, matches
them with musical collaborators, and oversees the musical direction of the
label.
General Manager (owner): GeneralManagers are the decision makers at a
label, overseeing aspects of an album’s creation such as marketing, budgeting,
distribution, and promotional shoots.
Director of Publicity: Oversees the Publicity Departmentat record labels and is
responsiblefor formulating and managing publicity campaigns.
Artist Relations and Development Representative: Artist Relations and
Development Representatives work with artists to cultivate and develop their
careers, both artistically and financially.
Marketing Manager: Oversees all aspects of marketing albums, including
publicity and radio promotions. Also works with digital and physical
distributors to ensuresongs and albums are available for purchase.
Account Representative: Implements record label advertising campaigns.
Social Media Manager: Social Media Managers writeand schedule content for
an artist or music company’s socialpages. They also interact with fans and
providecustomer service on the social sites they manage.
AssistantMarketing Manager: supportthe Marketing Manager in carrying out
marketing campaigns to maximise the sales or to promote a particular record
label, artist, online music service, radio station or other music product.
Legal: legal department is responsiblefor all the contracts that are made
between the company and the artist. The label’s team of attorneys will draft
the recording contracts and do the final negotiations with the artist’s manager
or lawyer. Any legal actions, such as lawsuits between musicians and the label,
go through this department.
