Time line
◦ Second Volt has been operational since 2019.
◦ 2019- The SBU released its first product the second hand good, consumer electronic- TV
◦ 2019- The SBU starts to articulate interest via Social works
◦ 2020- The SBU starts to use music for propaganda exposure
◦ 2021- Second Volt starts articulating interest via Scholar works
Manufacturer service
◦ This SBU is a manufacturer service. This means that Second Volt purchases parts from multiple distributers to create a product. The SBU
has been focused on the sales of second hand goods- television screens because it is a complementary good to this SBU’s intended
unannounced product. The SBU has been doing research and development on raspberry Pi and its alternatives. This SBU desires to make
an aesthetic product that can have a high resale value and notoriety.
Revenue
◦ Second Volt is currently doing research and development on consumer electronics hence, its revenue generating activities are limited
although, this SBU has the ability to make revenue through the sales of used electronics such as televisions. For now, this SBU is dormant
until its value proposition is created.
◦ The SBU has been selling its product, the second hand goods via social media. It has the ability to generate advertising revenue. In this the
SBU are creating a perception of the value of the second hand good. Companies such as Game Stop and EB Games make profit off of
used goods. This SBU is using that idea to its advantage by first selling used consumer electronics then producing and manufacturing for
the sale of its own product.
Competition
◦ The domestic competition is HP and Dell computers. These companies have a similar business models. These companies are large
operations and they manage their entire supply line as they create their product.
◦ The foreign competition includes Ockel Computers. This is a Dutch computer company running on Windows. Ockel Computers is a start
up company that emerged from a crowdfunding campaign that was successful. The company is experiencing some technical difficulties
which can be attributed to the fact that they, like this SBU are start ups.
Trends
◦ There doesn’t seem to be anything too interesting here in this industry as the manufacturers have opted for a calculator like stagnant market.
They have standardized the computer and it are systematically sold in retailer shelves with little to no innovation. Not all is negative
however, the manufacturers have slowly been increasing the processing capabilities of the devices they release., as well as improving
graphics chips, increasing RAM and storage amounts. This has seemed to make customers satisfied with the market.
Problem
◦ Second Volt is interested in innovation and disruption. This means it has a political interest in the consumer electronics that are available in
the domestic environment. The issue however is the lack of differentiation as costs have become stable. This becomes a policy interest.
This SBU aims to create a policy whereby an Industrial Design is necessary after a certain number of unit sales. This would cause
companies that are releasing similar products Dell and HP to have a lot of difference in brand identification as well as to allow startups to
flourish. This results in fair competition.
Target audience
◦ The target audience for this SBU are the bloggers. The products this SBU intends are going to cater to the demands of these individuals
that require a fast, portable and convenient device to write with. There are mobile devices and laptops however, those devices don’t operate
with the Windows operating system. This SBU is focused on creating products that serve as vehicles for such activity and it is necessary to
have the right design and ergonomics to facilitate that.
◦ This SBU is also targeting students. The SBU wants to create its product specifically for these individuals to have better studying techniques
through their devices. An initiative by Google offering laptops to third world countries for free, is an example of a similar cause.
What is it now today?
◦ Today/ What is this SBU? This SBU is currently working off of multiple devices from multiple operating systems. It is very aware of the
need for internet and device security. It has worked with multiple IT technicians and software producers to get a grasp on the workings of
the industry. There are companies that have worked under another larger company, this includes Sega using Windows CE and Samsung that
uses AndroidOS. This SBU henceforth, is designing additions to the Windows operating system, through blogs and publications that have
become PROGRAMS. The SBU plans to include these PROGRAMS with the hardware that it produces. Further, this SBU is working with
another SBU to create software.
Business risk
◦ The high cost of penetration is the risk here. Creating the products that this SBU are going to vend is going to be a challenge. A lot of
cooperation and collaboration is necessary to get a good product to market. The stocking of the product at retailers is also an issue, as
stock fees in retailers such as Best Buy are very high. This SBU may consider other options such as Amazon, Ebay etc.
◦ Another risk is securing a reliable supply chain. Sales of raspberry Pi’s and its alternatives have been high. This means that the product is
sold out or not stocked enough. This SBU needs to create partners which can help it obtain the parts it needs for its product.
◦ Another issue is the lack of responsiveness by the Operating System manufacturer. This has happened to Sega and HP in the past where
Microsoft was unresponsive in their support of the devices using their operating system. The result of it was the lack of uptake of the Sega
and HP technologies (Sega Dreamcast and HP Elite X3). The SBU is focused on maintaining good relations as much as possible although it
has experienced some security issues.
◦ The high fees for licensing the operating system is a risk.
