Active Praise Ltd is the name of a privately owned retailer of which I was
one of six directors, for fourteen years. The company owned two cycle
shops and owned up to twelve newsagents. During this time as a director I
was actively involved in building the company, looking for new outlets,
involved in new product ranges, increasing turnover and profitability, as
well as being hands on running of the shops. The cycle shops were a forte
of mine in the early years, however due to the seasonal nature of this side
of this business, they were sold and we concentrated on newsagents.
2. Concourse News Ltd is a company my wife and I started. As the name
suggests we continued in the retail sector as newsagents. This role
although similar to the previous position was different in that I was
responsible for all aspects of business. Responsibilities included raising
finance, putting together credible business plans, dealing with leases, all
aspects of staff planning and development, budgeting, sales analysis,
buying and selling stock.
I grew this business to seven outlets and in addition had my own
distribution warehouse. Due to circumstances we later reduced the
business to four retail outlets all based in Newcastle centre, and operated
these successfully for several years.
