Editor's Notes
Dropbox is a company with aspirations that extend far beyond simply syncing our customers’ files. What do we do? Everything our product team focuses on now and in the future – is to unleash the world’s innovative energy by designing a more enlightened way of working. Dropbox Business is a central workspace that helps teams stay organized and keep their work flowing.
Dropbox has incredible customers who also believe in our mission, and we keep gaining momentum. Dropbox now has over 300k customers, which includes 56% of the Fortune 500, and great profiles across a number of different industries. We work with the likes of Ecolab, Under Armour, the Washington Post, and World Vision to help them keep their teams – and their work – in sync.
While we’ve seen broad adoption of Dropbox Business, an area that has stood out is the unique adoption amongst companies in tech. With partners like Facebook, HPE, and Expedia, we’re deeply integrated with the unique workflows of tech companies.
Given our work with customers in the [tech] industry, we’ve heard about some of the common challenges with getting teams and their work in sync.
Highly dispersed project teams & materials
Keeping all types of team materials and file in one place — accessible by engineering, product, and sales alike.
Uploading and sharing large design, programming, and coding files without size or compatibility limitations.
Complex supply chain coordination
Collaborating effectively with design, product, and engineering teams to iterate quickly
Ability to collaborate on mockups, product demos, and illustrations on any device or OS — whether at HQ or part of a field team.
Accessing industry favorite development, project management, and communication tools like: Jira Software• Microsoft• Salesforce• Slack• Trello, and even developer apps like MySQL and Heroku
Need to control sensitive IP
Keeping sensitive IP in the right hands, especially with employee BYOD or when working with contractors and vendors
Controlling access to important information when onboarding and off-boarding employees as company needs change
Do these workflows resonate? Are there other challenges that [Company] faces? What tools are used to keep these workflows in sync? What works well, and what doesn’t?
For these three pain points you are experiencing, here’s where Dropbox Business can help you. We want to show you specific solutions of deploying with us:

Use Dropbox on any device or OS to enable field teams to preview mockups and illustrations on-the-go even when offline
Plug into your favorite development, project management, and communication tools, including: Jira Software• Microsoft• Salesforce• Slack• Trello, and even developer apps like MySQL and Heroku
Securely control and manage sensitive IP
Protect IP and empower employee BYOD with enterprise-grade security features, including: Detailed audit logs• Single-sign-on (SSO) capability• Admin Console to monitor sharing

Transfer licenses and data from one employee to another as company needs change
But, don’t just take our word for how Dropbox is making a difference with [tech] companies We’ve had customers with those same challenges. Here what Dropbox Business is doing for them. [Choose 1 to focus on]
HP Enterprise decreases time-to-market for new service offerings by using Dropbox as a streamlined hub for data center training materials. HP Enterprise split off from the original HP and focuses on servers, storage, networking, consulting, software and financial services.
HP Enterprise has over 2,500 users on Dropbox Business and collaborates with more than 5,000 external domains
Dropbox is centralizing the sales process and accelerating time to revenue by becoming the platform for content across all applications and ensuring orders are built using the latest requirements
Expedia is one of the world’s largest travel conglomerates, with a portfolio of over 200 web properties in 70+ countries
Expedia purchased Dropbox in an effort to embrace the end user tool of choice. Over 4k organic users has now grown into 10,000+ IT-managed Dropbox Business users
Expedia drives organic workflows across the company - examples include the HR team’s use of Dropbox’s DocuSign integration and the marketing team’s use for collaborating on video content
Expedia has used Dropbox to replace several legacy homegrown solutions. One project, dubbed “ExFiles” replaced a file transfer tool used by over 500 users to collaborate internally and externally. Dropbox’s superior sync speeds and simple UI have vastly simplified the process of sharing large files, saving users an estimated 6,800 hours of work per year
Plex Systems is a 500-employee cloud-based ERP software provider based in Michigan. Their software helps manufacturers around the globe manage their production processes
Plex Systems is realizing benefits ranging from improved collaboration for legal and sales teams to streamlining backup strategies on Dropbox. Plex Systems uses Dropbox to power a number of crucial workflows. They’ve automated a process using our Salesforce integration to ensure sales reps are always armed with the right contracts from the Legal team when they are working on an open opportunity. This has led to:
Ability to downsize Salesforce deployment (as many users can now access the documents they need in Dropbox rather than Salesforce)
Reduced use of e-mail to share contracts
In addition to enhancing collaboration, they’ve also used Dropbox to save big on infrastructure costs:
Integrated Dropbox with Synology NAS to back-up internal servers
Replaced end user desktop backup software with Dropbox
396% ROI achieved overall
How did we get to over 300,000 customers? We’ve built on our strengths as a company - our innovation and our focus on our customers. We think we have a unique approach to building a product that keeps teams and their work in sync. There are three reasons for this:
First, Dropbox is really easy to use, which drives adoption. We see lots of employees (500 million people worldwide) picking up Dropbox to solve their problems, and they love how easy it is to use. But, design makes it simple: Dropbox is very sophisticated under the hood. IT admins appreciate the power AND ease of use.
Second, we are designed to scale with the size and complexity of any organization. IDC’s study shows that Dropbox’s sync speed is the industry’s leader and works reliably with teams small and large.
Third: we have more than 500,000 developers driving our open collaboration platform, which allows our customers to tightly integrate Dropbox Business and Dropbox Paper with all of their important apps, from Autodesk to Microsoft Office.
ALL of this is supported by a foundation of enterprise-grade security that makes sure that your team’s work is protected in transit and in rest.
I’m going to spend a bit of time going through each of these things that makes Dropbox different – and take you through a demo of key features, so that you can see them in action. Why Dropbox? Let’s go find out.
Secondly, Dropbox is built to support the needs of the world’s largest corporations. Fast, efficient sync technology is one of the many reasons people choose Dropbox. Leading industry analyst IDC agrees: their independent “EFSS Evaluation Guide” names Dropbox sync performance as best-in-class, and I’m happy to share an article with you that has more information on that. [Link to blog post: https://blogs.dropbox.com/business/2016/09/idc-rates-dropbox-sync-performance-as-best-in-class/]
The reason our sync outperforms the competition is because of 4 proprietary innovative technologies we’ve built over the years: LAN sync, delta sync, streaming sync, and our most recently launched feature, Smart Sync.
Last year, we also announced Magic Pocket, our in-house multi-exabyte storage system. Bringing storage in-house has allowed us to customize our infrastructure and improve performance. It’s also meant that we can distribute our network around the world, to wherever our users are located.
EXTRA DETAIL (if needed)
LAN sync looks for new and updated files on your Local Area Network (LAN) first, bypassing the need to download the file from servers and speeding up sync considerably
Delta sync speeds up the transfer of updated files. Only modified portions of files are downloaded/uploaded, instead of transferring entire files every time they’re changed
Streaming sync speeds up transfers for larger files by beginning a download on a second device before files have finished uploading from the first device, instead of waiting for the upload to complete]
Security is something that is foundational to Dropbox. One of our company value is being worthy of our customers’ trust. Dropbox is built on a world-class security foundation that operates at an unrivaled scale.
