Interview Date: October 23, 2001

Then Father Judge was there and he was lying on the ground and I went over to
him, took off his collar, I opened up his shirt, checked for a pulse, and I knew at
that point that he didn't have any.
Q. Where was he?
A. He was with us in the lobby all the time.
Q. In the lobby?
A. Right. He was saying some prayers and he was very anxious in the lobby. I could
watch him. He was very concerned, very different, Father Judge, as I know him.
Apparently, what it was, it was a heart attack. We didn't know at the time it was a
heart attack. We thought he was hit with debris.

18. Narrator: “By this time, Chief Pfeifer had
found a safe exit. They tried to radio the
men in the lobby. No answer.”
Chief Pfeifer: “And we walked across the
bridge to the Trade Center. Still trying to
call on the radio, and, not getting through.
Firefighter: “The guys that were left
there, were not there anymore.”
Narrator: “They had gone out another
way, carrying the body of Father Mychal
Judge down the street to St. Peter’s
church.”
Chief Pfeifer (on right)
returns to lead his men to
safety. But, they have gone
with the body of Father
Judge.

20. Interview with Shannon
Stapleton, Reuters
photographer, who
photographed Father Judge
being carried down the
street. From the
documentary: The Saint of
9/11
21. “My first instict was I had to get
down there. So I ran down there and
got to about Chambers street, which
is about four blocks from the Trade
Center and the first tower had
collapsed (i.e., WTC 2).”
22. “I ran and made it to the base of the
tower that was still standing and
there was this real eerie light. It was
a weird day, you know, there was this
beautiful light coming in, and, um, as
I was getting near the tower people
were starting to evacuate down the
stairs. And I noticed there was a
group of firemen, police, FBI,
emergency services carrying this
man. I started making some frames
(i.e., photos).”
“…there was this beautiful light
coming in...”
Comment: How could anyone find
the light beautiful? WTC 2 had just
been demolished, dust was choking
the air and thousands had probably
just died.
23. “And this one fireman
started yelling at me:
“Stop taking photos, stop
taking photos!”
I kept shooting.”
