4. • Ceramic cements are used in applications such as:
▪ Potting / Bonding / Encapsulation or Coating
▪ Typically where temperatures are greater than 500oF
(260oC)
▪ Electrical insulation is required
▪ Thermal conductivity/thermal transmission of heat
away from the unit is desired
▪ Substrates may be metal, glass, or ceramic
▪ Automation of assembly process may occur

5. Selection Criteria
• A complete description of the application is
paramount to providing a proper product cement
recommendation.
• Customer should communicate & provide:
– the substrates the cement will contact
– temperature requirement(s)
– any electrical properties desired
– how the unit works in the application
– configuration of the unit
– engineering drawing or photograph of unit

6. Product Categories / Properties
• Air set adhesives
– Single component powders mixed with water, liquid or
provided as a pre-mixed paste
– Indefinite working time; final cure through evaporation
of water in 18 - 24 hours
– Thin film bonding or coating applications from 1/16”-
1/4” (1.59 mm – 6.35 mm)
– Available in lithium & sodium silicate chemistries

• Chemical set cements
– Single component powders mixed with water or
liquid component prior to use
– “Limited” working time - 30 minutes to 1 1/2 hours
– Best suited for “thick” film potting or bonding
– Available as sodium silicate, phosphate, aluminum
phosphate, & magnesium oxysulfate chemistries

– Single component mixed with water
– Working time 30 minutes to 1 hour
– Humidity cure required
– Used in “thick” film potting or casting
– Most economical
– Chemistry is calcium aluminate

9. Potting or bonding applications for ceramic or quartz assembly
requiring low coefficient of thermal expansion, good dielectric
properties and high thermal conductivity

10. Resistors
Coating, potting, and/or encapsulation of resistance wire placed in
or upon ceramic for electrical insulation and to maintain electrical
properties

11. Thermocouples
Potting application of quartz into ceramic body requiring high
thermal properties for gas & temperature analysis or cement used
on internal ceramic or stainless tube to pot temperature sensor

12. Igniters
Low thermal expansion cement required that offers refractory properties
and electrical insulation through 2600oF (1427oC) for potting application

13. Infrared Radiant Heaters
Thermally conductive potting application to embed heater coil in ceramic
diaphragm or on to high temperature ceramic or ceramic fiber structure .
Cement also provides electrical insulation by maintaining element coil
spacing

14. Heating Elements
Thermally conductive cement for assembly of element to maintain
temperature / electrical properties as designed for various heating
operations

15. High Temperature Filters
Adhesive application to bond or pot high temperature filter media
into stainless steel housing. Adhesive is used to bond stacked
components nested within the unit ensuring electrical connectivity

16. Silverware
Chemical-setting magnesium oxysulfate cement used to secure
the stainless steel blade into the knife handle assembly. Cement
must be resistant to temperature and water associated with
dishwasher cycles
