  4. 4. ivHeating Cables and TapesHeating cables and tapes are one of the mostversatile product lines in the Isopad range.Availablein a vast array of technologies, the Isopad range issurpassed by none.Isopad offers a variety of heating tapes and cablesto give fast and efficient direct contact heating.Theyare suitable for a wide range of applications fromsimple frost or condensation protection through toprocess requirements up to 1000°C.Where space is tight, heating tapes are the perfectsolution, allowing high temperatures to be reachedquickly and maintained on pipelines, containers andother irregular shapes. In addition pre-terminatedtapes are available in a variety of popular lengths,ready to install and easy to use requiring no specialskills or tools.TechnologyConstant wattage tapesThese flexible and rugged tapes are constructed fromparallel resistive cores insulated with various materialsfrom silicone to quartz glass. Strict manufacturingtolerances ensure these heaters have a uniformelement resistance, and due to the relationship betweencurrent, resistance and power, they deliver a constant,predetermined power density along the entire length.
  5. 5. vApplicationsDue to the versatile nature and broad range ofapplications for Isopad heating cables and tapesit’s impossible to list all of the industries serviced, thefollowing are just a few.Food processingCables and tapes are used in a variety of ways in thefood industry: for keeping freezer doors and drain linesfrost free, heating conveyor systems, creating anti-sticksurfaces, heat for sealing applications including lids onpre-packed foods and sealing plastic bags.Condensation protection for motorsIsopad anti-condensation motor (ACM) heaters havebeen specifically designed in conjunction with majormotor manufacturers to prevent condensation in motorwindings which would otherwise lead to sudden orpremature failure of the equipment; they are installedaround the stator and are popular with manufactures andmotor rewind companies alike.Mineral insulated heating cablesMineral insulated (MI) heating cables and units are rugged,long lasting and suitable for extreme conditions for example,to 1000˚C for very low vacuum/high pressure (or 600˚C for EXapplications). They are constructed from a metallic tube and aconductor which is supported and insulated from the tube with aninorganic insulating powder, magnesium oxide. The conductoris usually Nichrome 80/20 although other materials such ascopper and ferry can also be supplied for specific applications.The most common sheath materials are 321 stainless steel andInconel 600, copper and cupronickel are also available.Various methods can be employed to connect the MI heatingelement to the cold lead cable such as brazing or silver solder,however, no method offers the same temperature rating orproven longevity as that of the laser-welded cold lead jointdeveloped and employed by Isopad. A significant improvementon previous jointing techniques, this laser welding providesa totally mechanically secure joint.   6. 6. viHeating PanelsIsopad heating panels are suitable for applicationswhere uniform surface heating is required to maintainor increase the temperature of machine parts orequipment. Available in a variety of materials, sizesand fixing methods there is a panel in the Isopadrange for almost all requirements.TechnologySilicone heating panel (200°C)Isopad silicone panels are fully waterproof and suitablefor applications up to 200°C. Formed by encapsulatinga resistive heating element between two layers of semivulcanised silicone rubber and then sealed undertemperature and an even pressure to form a singlevulcanised silicone sheet.Uniform heat density is achieved using decades ofexperience at the design stage and the heating elementis precisely laid using a numerically controlled 2 axispositioning system.Isopad silicone panels use no adhesive and as theyare essentially a single piece of silicone and there is noseam which is a common failure mechanism in panelsmanufactured using lower quality methods.Isopad silicone panels provide good resistance toozone, oxygen, weathering, ageing effects, bacterialand fungal attacks. They are also highly resistant tovarious chemicals such as alcohol, acetylene, mineraloil, acids, glucose, and glues. Isopad silicone heatingpanels can also be toughened with glass cloth whenimproved mechanical strength is required.Glass silk heating panel (450°C)A highly flexible and versatile panel suitablefor applications up to 450°C and produced byencapsulating a resistive heating element in glass silk.Isopad offer this product with several fixing methodsfrom hooks and eyes, to lace, to Velcro depending onthe client’s specific needs.Quartz cloth heating panel (900°C)Identical to the glass silk heating panel from aconstruction perspective the maximum operationtemperature is increased from 450°C to 900°C bychanging the insulation material to quartz cloth.

The largesize possible with Isopad platens has facilitated themanufacture of some of the largest solar panels currentlyavailable.H e a t i n g P a n e l sMetal cased heating panel (1000°C)At the core of an Isopad metal cased heating panel lies an MIheating cable which results in an inherently robust product. TheMI element is precisely formed to achieve a uniform heat densityand fixed to a metallic plate for use as a radiant or contact heater.Isopad metal cased heating panels are ideally suited for use inhigh vacuum applications where it is essential to address thepotential failure mechanisms at the design stage, for example• Minimum number of vacuum feed-throughs−− THERMOCOAX has access to the longest lengths of mineralinsulated cable in the industry and therefore a minimumnumber of feed-throughs and cold-lead joints is possible• High temperature, reliable cold-lead joints−− Isopad cold-lead joints are laser welded which, not onlyincreases the operation temperature compared to brazedjoints, but also greatly improves the reliability of the joint• Avoid introducing possible sources of volatile contamination−− The all-metal construction is very suitable for use in highvacuum equipment as it prevents contamination fromvolatiles. Vacuum feed-throughs and sensors are suppliedas part of the assembly to remove the risk of contaminationprior to installation.Radiant heatersWhere heat transfer through physical contact is not possibleor desirable, an Isopad radiant heater is the ideal solution. Itcombines the uniform heat density and robust properties of amineral insulated heating cable with a highly polished, supportplate. Directed heat with a withstand temperature up to 1000°Cis possible and panels can be manufactured up to 5 squaremeters.Platen heatersIsopad platen heaters are produced by mounting a mineralinsulated cable within an aluminium plate which has beenmachined to exacting tolerances and controls.   8. 8. viiiHeating JacketsIsopad heating jackets provide a convenient solutionblending the versatility of a heating panel with theconvenience of integral insulation. A heating panelexcels when it is required to heat a flat surface,wherea jacket is the product of choice when a uniform heatsource is required to a surface in more than 2 planes,for example pipes, filter housings, valves and tees.A distinct advantage is maintenance down-time; it issignificantly quicker to remove a jacket with integralinsulation than it is with other heating methods suchas a heating tape with sensor, lagging and securingtape.Isopad heating jackets can be manufactured toalmost any shape,temperature range and operationalconsideration.TechnologySilicone jackets (200°C)Isopad silicone jackets are fully waterproof and suitablefor applications up to 200°C.   9. 9. ixApplicationsFrost protection heatersIn 2010 it cost the UK an estimated£27m to rectify the damage causedby frozen pipes, in addition watersupply, drainage and soil systemsbecame inoperable for extendedperiods. Isopad heating jacketshave been used to ensure key supply and waste servicesoperate consistently in sub zero conditions, for examplethe jackets in the above image were designed for thesoil system of a temporary toilet facility set-up by themilitary ensuring toilets remained operational in extremeconditions.Heating complex shapes Isopad have designed andsupplied countless heating jacketsfor complex shapes which not onlyensures an even heat density butalso reduces expensive site time atboth installation and maintenancestages.Heaters for filtration systemsHeating filter housings aids filtration,separation and purification byeliminating condensation andresidual water, reducing liquidviscosity and maintaining thetemperature of the medium slightlyabove the dew point to prolong the life of the cartridge.Heatpromotestheflowoffluidsthroughthefiltercartridge,this reduces the load on the pumps and filters andresults in longer maintenance intervals. By maintainingthe medium at a constant working temperature, with nohot spots, there is no degradation or crystallisation ofthe liquid being filtered. Isopad filter heater jackets arepermanently moulded to shape with integral insulatingsilicone foam, there is no need for straps or bolts to holdit to the filter housing, which reduces maintenance time.Heaters for intermediate bulk containersDesigned for caged, plastic, ormetal tote tanks / IBCs, the wrap-around blanket design evenly heatsa tote tank externally, helping tomaintain a constant temperature.Glass silk heating jacket (450°C)A highly flexible, versatile jacket suitable for applications upto 450°C and produced by encapsulating a resistive heatingelement within a glass silk outer. Isopad offer this product withseveral fixing methods from hooks and eyes, to lace, to Velcrodepending on the client’s specific needs.Quartz cloth heating jacket (900°C)Identical to the Glass silk heating jacket from a constructionperspective the maximum operation temperature is increasedfrom 450°C to 900°C by changing the insulation material toquartz cloth.Metal cased heating jacket (1000°C)Isopad heating jackets can be designed utilising any of theheating cables and tapes within the Isopad range in order toform a robust and protected product.   10. 10. xHeated HosesMany products are heated in containers or processesto improve their flow characteristics or homogeneity.Moving these materials between processes orfrom storage vessels can be problematic as rigidpipe work combined with cumbersome heatingmethods can be undesirable at best and is oftenimpossible. Isopad heated hoses solve these issuesby seamlessly blending industry standard hoses andfittings with world leading heating technology into aflexible hose with integral heater and sensor.Isopad hoses are designed and manufactured tooptimise heat uniformity and control characteristicsusing an integrated temperature sensor and evenlydistributed resistive heating element. Decadesof engineering experience ensure the hose willmaintain the medium being transferred at an even,pre-set temperature, avoiding hot spots or changesin viscosity, eliminating condensation, degradationand crystallisation.The flexible properties of the heated hose eliminatemany problems with alignment and machinevibration.TechnologyInner hose is in direct contact with the liquid or gas.Standard hoses are high-quality polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE) which exhibit many characteristics that make itthe ideal choice from a very low coefficient of frictionto a high chemical resistance and a temperature rangeof -70°C to 250°C. Other materials can be used tomanufacture hoses for specific applications.Stainless steel braiding is required for highpressure use. The PTFE inner hose is provided with astainless steel braiding. Up to 3 layers of braiding canbe applied to increase the operational pressure up to500 bar @ 24°C (6 mm diameter inner).Heating element is precisely wound aroundthe hose at a constant predetermined pitch to ensureaccurate and uniform heat density.Temperature sensor ensures accurate systemcontrol. Isopad heated hoses have an integral sensor,several types are available e.g. Pt100 resistancetemperature device, type K thermocouple, type Nthermocouple.Fleece ensures the heating element and sensor pitchremains unchanged during the repeated manipulationsthe hose will endure during operation.
  11. 11. xiApplicationsGas analysersWhen analysing gas it is criticalthat the composition of thegas is unchanged betweenthe gas sample point and thegas analyser itself, none of theconstituent parts can changephase or the analysis will beinaccurate.Isopad heated hoses have been extensively used in thisfield to maintain the temperature and prevent externalcontamination thus ensuring an accurate analysis, forexample, exhaust gas analysing equipment used byleading car manufacturers.Automotive / robotic industryThe automotive industry hasbeen revolutionised by roboticsbut new challenges had to beovercome, for example, many carwindscreens are secured using a“hot” adhesive applied using anarticulated robotic arm, the gluemust be maintained within a specific temperature rangefor optimised adhesion which is simply not possibleusing fixed pipe work or an unheated system.Isopad, in partnership with a leading robotics company,designed a heated hose that could withstand therigours of the automotive industry, this was particularlychallenging due to the degree of articulation and thenumber of repetitions required by the client.Oil pumpingOil transportation has becomedifficult as more and moreheavy oil is extracted, there iscurrently more than twice thereserves of heavy oil than thereare conventional oil. To meetthe demands of this challengingindustry Isopad design heavyduty heated hoses specificallyto reduce the viscosity of oil toallow it to be pumped betweencontainers and transporters.Isopad hoses are also used with light oil in areas withsevere winter conditions, the cold temperatures increasethe viscosity of the light oil making it very difficult topump unless heated.H e a t e d H o s e sInsulation material and thickness is calculated to minimiseheat loss and ensure the maintain temperature specified by theclient is achieved.Braiding is not only aesthetically pleasing but it’s alsodesigned to ensure the insulation material remains undamagedand firmly held in place as well as meeting the static anddynamic bend requirements of the client.End cap with cable entry has dual use, firstly to ensure thehose remains intact during operation and secondly it provides asecure and convenient location for both the power and sensorconnection cables.PTFE smooth hoseHeating elementMetal braidPolyester-fleecePower and sensorconnection leadsEPDM foamPolyamide protective braidSoft EPDM endcap
  12. 12. xiiDrum HeatersIsopad offers a range of drum and base heaters thatprovide a reliable way to reduce viscosity, protectstored product from frost and enable productremoval. Available in both nonhazardous andhazardous area versions with reliable temperaturecontrol, Isopad drum heaters offer the ideal heatingsolutions for viscous products stored in drums,for example: adhesives, asphalt, waxes/paraffin,chemicals, chocolate dyes and varnishes. Threetypes of drum heaters are available a metal drumheater,a soft jacket drum heater and a silicone drumheating band.TechnologyMetal drum heater designIsopad drum heaters have a unique “clam shell” designand castors, heaters can simply be wheeled up to andclosed around the drum, eliminating overhead lifting.The clam shell design allows the heater to be storedopen, against a wall taking up less space. Castors areantistatic and have parking brakes to prevent heatermovement whilst in use.Supplied as a complete unit with integral insulationand lid the Isopad drum heater is very efficient with theadded benefit of allowing the drum to be heated at orclose to where the product is needed.Manufactured in heavy gauge sheet steel with a doubleskin construction housing, the electric heating elementscover the entire inner surface. The heating elements areprovided with reinforced thermal insulation to preventheat loss through the outer wall. Inner walls are paintedwith a thermally conductive paint to give maximum heattransfer.
  13. 13. xiiiCompatible drum materialsIsopad drum heaters can be used with ferrous and plasticdrums as heat is provided via an electric heating element asopposed to induction heating.Energy efficientIsopad drum heaters are designed to reduce energyconsumption through a combination of thermal insulation andtemperature control. The drum heater is the entire length of thedrum and the surface is in close proximity to the drum itself whichminimises the power required to heat the product, particularly incomparison to drum ovens or shorter drum heaters.Heating in hazardous areasIsopad drum heaters are available with IECEx and ATEX systemapproval. Drum and base drum heaters for hazardous areas areequipped with a self-regulating heating system negating theneed for a separate temperature limiting device.Soft jacket drum heaterIsopad soft jacket drum heaters are designed to wrap arounda drum and combine the convenience of quick heat-up timeand the precision of a digital controller. Fixed with a hook andloop Velcro fastening and insulated with glass silk cloth, theseheaters can heat up to 232°C.Silicone drum heating bandSilicone band heaters consist of a resistance heating cable andsilicone carrier. There are two versions available, one with aninternal Pt100 sensor and temperature limiter to 180°C and theother with a built-in adjustable thermostat with a control rangeof 10°C to 218°C.ApplicationsFood productionMany products such as glucose, chocolate, molasses,syrup and honey are transported and stored in drums,yet the ambient temperature viscosity means theyare very difficult or impossible to remove from thedrum effectively. Isopad drum heaters are employedextensively in these industries to provide an efficient,safe method to heat the drum and the product sufficientlyto remove it from the drum.Petroleum industriesHeavy oil and high wax content petroleum are notoriouslydifficult to remove from transportation drums due to theirhigh viscosity, this is compounded by the difficultiesassociated with the direct application of heat withinhazardous areas.   14. 14. xivGas Bottle HeatersIsopad gas bottle heaters have been designedspecifically to solve the issues associated withgas usage in cold climates i.e. gas separation, gasliquefaction and reduced capacity. There are twoversions available, a heavy duty metal version whichis based on the same technology as our metal drumheater and is suitable for use in hazardous areas anda soft lag gas bottle heater.TechnologyMetal gas bottle heaterPhysical designIsopad gas bottle heaters have a unique “clam shell”design and castors, heaters can simply be wheeledup to and closed around the gas bottle, eliminatingoverhead lifting. The clam shell design allows theheater to be stored open, against a wall taking up lessspace. Castors are antistatic and have parking brakesto prevent heater movement while in use.Manufactured in heavy gauge sheet steel with a doubleskin construction housing the electric heating elementsthat cover the entire inner surface. The heating elementsare provided with reinforced thermal insulation toprevent heat loss through the outer wall. Inner wallsare painted with a thermally conductive paint to givemaximum heat transfer.

Hazardous area approved designs are equipped witha self-regulating heating system negating the need for a separatetemperature limiting device.Soft lag gas bottle heaterIsopad soft jacket gas bottle heaters are available in different gascylinder sizes with a 240 V power supply. Fixed with a hook andloop Velcro fastening and insulated with glass silk cloth, theseheaters feature a grounded heating element.ApplicationsGas bottle heaters in a power stationCompressed gas is used during the commissioningand start-up phases of gas turbines, it’s critical that areliable and constant gas supply is available. ISOPADHazardous area gas bottle heaters were recently usedto guarantee the bottled gas supply met the client’srequirements during the start-up ignition sequence at anew plant in Yemen.Reduced gas costIn cold climates, the volumetric output from a gas bottlereduces as the material in the bottle becomes / remainsin a liquid state, for example, several Isopad customerswere questioned by their gas supplier when they returnedgas bottles which still contained useable material, theissue was the gas wasn’t useable at the cold site ownedby the customer and, in fact, the customer thought thebottles were empty. The solution was an Isopad gasbottle heater which allowed the client to use all of thematerial purchased thus reducing gas cost as well asdelivery charges.
