1. is a British documentary
series broadcast on Channel
4, documenting the lives of
several residents of James
Turner Street, Winson Green
in Birmingham.
2. ENTERTAIN
INFORMATIVE
RAISE AWARENESS
The show does have many
humorous moments, from
the banter between the
residents on the streets, to
the less serious characters like
Fungi giving it a more
comedic feel.
Throughout the
documentary, facts and
statistics are mentioned
quite frequently to inform
the audience and keep
them up to pace with what
the people have been going
through as well as what
they are going through
throughout the doc.
The main theme is to make the
audience aware of what people in
England living off benefits are going
through, either to make them feel
sympathy or just more aware of how
others are living.
3. OFF SCREEN NARRATOR LOCATION/MIS PEOPLEโS PERSPECTIVES
The off screen narrator talks over
the documentary adding
additional information and giving
the audience an outline of whatโs
happening/happened. The makes
the documentary flow smoothly.
This documentary is predominantly
filmed on James Turner Street,
where these residents live. Other
locations are places where these
people try to make money. The only
locations shown are the place
where the protagonists live.
The opinions and everyday life
portrayal of people living off
benefits are the main focus of this
documentary. This gives a more
emotive tone as we are hearing
from people in the situation talk
about what their lives are like
4. OBSERVATIONAL MODE
The mode emulates the fly-on-the-wall
method in which the portrayal is meant to
look as authentic as possible, the camera
crew are as unobtrusive as possible. Besides
the instances of the characters talking
towards the camera, they go on about their
daily lives and relations as if they arenโt
being filmed, including the time Danny was
arrested. This mode is the most authentic
and real.
5. The documentary follows an OPEN NARRATIVE as the aim is just to make
people aware of what's happening, there's no distinct question that requires an
answer, its just a straight forward documentary portraying peoples lives. It is also
LINEAR as all the events that take place all follow a chronologic time frame.
6. I have learned that documentaries follow different modes which
they follow in order to not sidetrack the whole project, they also
have different purposes so the information placed in it is different
to other documentaries and the tone and overall feelings the
watcher has towards it are different. The codes and conventions
used as well as narrative structure used all have a major impact on
documentaries, whichever ones focused on have a major impact on
the end product of the documentary.
