Igniting an Open Community

Editor's Notes

  1. This cake is closed education. Fires are burning, but independently. this small child can extinguish them all.
  2. Put those flames together and lose the cake, you get Open educational practices. Fires burn together brightly as one. Blowing on it only feeds it. That small child has no chance here.
  3. My work so far has been in trying to connect the pieces and plug people in to them. here are a few ways that could happen

  5. Little tidbits with links to more. In familiar categories. The community building is in the development of this. We want your stories, not just ours.
  6. Cutting or trailing edge tech. Always cutting edge uses of those tech. Try to get the ideas from someone out there, and give them credit

  8. Find a node in the network and suggest people plug in to it. Helen dewaard.
  9. OERs are not hidden so they don't fit the typical buried treasure stereotype but we want to show them more. Ex Open Textbook library, github free programming books
  10. When our open texts find a home we like to celebrate it. Pre-Post confed text being adopted in a few institutions.

Ontario Extend is an immersive, experiential learning opportunity where the participants are challenged to teach and learn with different modes and formats, to create and collaborate using digital technology tools, and to discern what approaches may be used to design significant technology-enabled learning experiences. The supporting modules are grounded in the framework of Anatomy of 21st Century Educators 6 modules grounded in the framework of Anatomy of 21st Century Educators (Bates, 2014). On own or sequential Central to all of this is the creation of a Domain of One’s Own. DoOO allows this whole thing to be holistic for you and community buildingfor everyone
  13. A module for each area of the 21st century educator. You’re a cargo train with some of these cars pretty full. Some may be emptier. The modules help you to start filling them up
  14. You are welcome to adapt the modules as part of a facilitated learning experience offered either online, in a face-to-face workshop, or a mix of both. We encourage you to explore the content, consider the resources, experience the activities and reflect on your practice. Just finishing up revisions from summer institute (Northern institutions) with feedback from them and beginning talks about next steps and how to deploy Open or cohorts or both. In your institution. It is community building itself
  15. Dailies/weekly have and will dip into each area. Often two or three. Dipping your toes in on a regualrish basis. See others. Connect with each other though seeing ideas and takes You do the work in your domain or just via twitter. Share it out There are the weeklies, but also the more in depth activities. These will feed an activity bank/ hub of extend activity

Student co-created text The open faculty Patchbook is us doing the same for faculty development A community quilt of pedagogy. Many patches written by individuals put together to create a manual that tries to cover most things to do with teaching in college Put out a list of skills like discussion.. group work… assessment… the basic things What came back were not tips for how to do this so much as the true stories of teaching. These stories included Bigfoot, bees. Tetris I'll tell you a little bit about a few of them
