A NOTE FROM STAFF PARISH
North Hollywood FUMC Staff Parish Relations Committee would like
to extend our most sincere thanks and gratitude to Pastor Allison Mark
for all of her hard work over the last six months.
Pastor Allison came appointed as our Interim Pastor in January 2018
under difficult circumstances.  She did a fantastic job and added a sense
of needed stability at our church.  It has been a pleasure working with
her over this period of time and we wish her all of God's blessings as she
transitions into her new appointment.  We are sure that she will be well
received at her new church as she is truly passionate about her ministry
and doing God's work to make the world a better place.
Many Thanks to you Pastor Allison, husband Pastor Andy, Kaira and
Amara. We will miss you all.
We also would like to extend a warm welcome to our new senior pastor,
Steve Peralta! Pastor Steve comes to us with a number of skills that will
help us bolster areas of focus for us, such as building our youth ministry
and reinvigorating our worship. We look forward to advancing our
ministry with Pastor Steve, building on the strong foundation and work
that we have already been doing.
Currently, Pastor Steve is moving from his home in Santa Clarita to
North Hollywood, as well as, moving into his study in the church office.
We request that we give Pastor Steve time to settle in and become
familiar with his new church home. Please be sure to come to worship
and introduce yourself. The church office will be available to take
appointments for meetings with Pastor Steve in the middle of the month.
Pastor Steve, welcome to your new church family. We are excited to
move forward together with you in mission and ministry.
Blessings,
NOHO FUMC SPRC
HIGHLIGHTS OF WORSHIP
June 3 - Today was the Second Sunday after Pentecost. Pastor Allison shared the children’s message and
sermon this morning. Both messages were based on Hebrews 6:16-20 and her sermon was titled,
“Restoring Balance,” which was part of her Transitions Sermon Series. We shared in the sacrament of
communion today.
June 10 - This morning we celebrated Choir Recognition Sunday! Charles Minetree donned a suit and
bow tie and accompanied the choir on tuba. Patty asked the kids to assist with handing out gifts to the
choir. Pastor Allison gave thanks to all members of the choir, Jeff & Roger. Each member of the choir
received a bag of goodies and thank you note. Jeff and Libeck shared special music, singing a duet, “The
Prayer.” Sandy Flemming read scripture to represent the choir. Pastor Allison’s sermon, “Beyond The
Unknown,”was based on 2 Corinthians 4:13-5:1, which was about things we cannot see beyond the
horizon.
June 17 - Happy Father’s Day and the Fourth Sunday after Pentecost. All the gentlemen in attendance
received a special gift. Pastor Allison, Patty Kelsey, Andrew Esposo, David Eshleman, and Daniella Lake,
returned from Annual Conference in time to celebrate Father figures of all kinds with the congregation.
We had a special moment of privilege to witness to the baptism of our sister in Christ, Judy Palmer.
Scripture was read by new Dad, Cole Gerdes, who brought his newborn baby, Wyatt and his wife Tristen
to church today. “Big Things on the Horizon,” was the title of Pastor Allison’s sermon that was based on 2
Corinthians 5:6-10 (11-13), 14-17.
June 24 - It was a big Sunday today! This was Pastor Allison’s last Sunday in the pulpit and the service
was full of many special moments. We enjoyed special music shared by Jodie Bowman and Jeff Thomas,
who sang, “A Living Prayer,” in honor of her son, Sebastien’s baptism. We also welcomed new members,
Jesse Boone, Eddy Faulkner, and Scott & Tonya Peat! Patty Kelsey shared a moment with children about
the meaning of Aloha, not only as “hello and goodbye,” but also as a spirit and a way of life. Patty taught
the kids how to hold a lei when presenting it as a gift and then gave each child a lei and asked the children
to share a aloha, mahalo and hug to Pastor Allison. SPRC shared a word of thanks and presented Pastor
Allison with a card signed by the entire congregation and also presented her with a fresh orchid lei. Patty
Kelsey presented Pastor Allison with a handmade stole, made by Shirley Kurushima. The stole was made
with material from the newly refurbished bride’s room and photos memories of Pastor Allison’s time with
us. Pastor Allison floated off down the sanctuary aisle in her land speeder, down Tujunga to beautiful
luncheon followed outside on our patio courtyard. It was a wonderful time, filled with gratitude and
Aloha. So much love and appreciation was shared by all in attendance.

Pastor Steve Peralta has served in ministry for
over 20 years. He graduated from Fuller
Theological Seminary in 1998 and has served
churches in Huntington Beach, Santa Barbara,
Thousand Oaks, and Valencia. He loves to
preach, teach, and help people connect to
God. He has served on the Board of Ordained
Ministry for ten years and currently leads the
Theology Team for Full-Connection.  When
he isn’t pastoring, he is an avid cyclist, a lover
of good food, and a semi-capable guitarist and
vocalist. He enjoys the outdoors and
adventurous travel. He also has embraced his
inner nerd and love for the Star Wars
Universe.
As he gets to know NoHo, he hopes to help the
church grow in its faith and hear God’s call to
be in ministry to the surrounding community.
We have Good News to share in a world that is
hungry for love, wholeness, and a sense of
purpose.
Pastor Steve with Pastor Allison, Andrew Esposo, Daniella
Lake, David Eshleman, & Patty Kelsey at Annual Conference.
The Trustees are doing an inventory of
Church keys. If you have an "R" or a "K"
key and still need it, please tell Kathi Ellis.  If
you no longer need the key, please return it to
Kathi  818 761-2436.   Thanks!
On June 20, 2018, at the UMW Tea, we gave
a Special Mission Recognition Pin to Pastor
Allison Mark.  We appreciate her loving time
spent here and the gifts she shared with the
Congregation.   Aloha!

The Valley Cultural Center and Councilman
Paul Krekorian are presenting free concerts at
North Hollywood Park, next to the Amelia
Earhart Library, the 5 Saturdays in July as well
as Sat, August 4. The concerts feature a variety
of music with local talent opening each show
and the headliners immediately following.

The music will be enjoyable whether you have
heard of any of the local talent or the
headliners, but you have heard of Luis Oliart.
You know him as Director of the North
Hollywood Interfaith Food Pantry, but Luis is
also an entertainer. Luis and the Hinges will be
the opening act on Sat, July 28th, featuring
soulful rock and blues music. The headliner that
night is Lisa Haley & the Zydekats, the world’s
most beloved Americana/Cajun/Zydeco band.

The show begins at 7 pm so that night park
your car at the church north parking lot at 6:30
pm and walk with your friends up Tujunga to
No Ho Park.

You may bring blankets, low chairs (under 3 ft.
in height), tarps and pillows. You may not use
stakes to keep your blankets in place as they are
a safety hazard. No grills or open flames of any
kind are allowed in the park. Food and non-
alcoholic beverages are permitted and a variety
of food trucks will be ready at 6:30 pm. Please
keep animals tethered and respect your
neighbors by being mindful of your space and
the view of others.
By Patty Kelsey
We have formally organized a Visitation Team.
Our Shepards are: Nylean Rapinac, Lynn
Yoshizumi, Jodi Smith, Judy Palmer, Chuck Schafer,
Patty Kelsey, and our Pastor.
The team takes time to visit the homebound, send a
note or card, or phone call. Perhaps it is just to pick
them up and take them to a social gathering. All
contacts are logged to keep track of who is in need
and to make sure we spread the visits out to all who
are in need.

BEDSIDE ADVENTURE KITS
By Patty Kelsey
Your Missions Team has been supporting
Discovery Arts for 9 years by making
Bedside Adventure Kits!
Discovery Arts brings music, dance, art and drama to
children with cancer, serious blood disorders and life
threatening illness while they are receiving treatment.
For those children who are too ill to participate in the
group program, a Discovery Arts team member brings
the magic directly to their bedside for their very own Arts
Adventure.
Bedside Adventure Kits are custom packaged kits, filled
with a variety of age appropriate art materials and fun
creative projects. Each and every child receives a Bedside
Adventure Kit, additional kits are also provided to the
hospitals for children to enjoy when Discovery Arts is not
on site.
We will be making 100 boxes filled to the brim
with art supplies!

Podcast:
Our Fellow Church member and acolyte Daniella Lake is starting a podcast and needs your help! The
podcast is titled “Life Told By a Stranger”. In the podcast, Daniella has a chat with strangers and not
so strangers, and asks them all the same four questions about life. The purpose of it is to gain insight
on life from people who have had different walks of life. Sound interesting? Daniella invites all of you
to be on her podcast! Don’t be shy! Tell anyone who you think will be interested as well! See Daniella
Lake for more details and to arrange recording dates.
Annual Conference:
Cal -Pac Annual Conference was an amazing experience! It showed me a whole new side of the United
Methodist Church! It was interesting to see how the church is not just about worship but it is a social,
historical, and even political  institution. I was so happy to see how diverse our church is and how many
people it takes to keep it running. We discussed many topics from the budget of annual conference to
making certain churches historical sites. At Annual Conference, we voted on several different matters that
will have an impact on the United Methodist Church as a whole. It was really nice to see this side of the
church.
Another part of Annual Conference I enjoyed was being a youth lay voting member. I got to meet a lot of
youths my age and some even younger. It was fun to spend time with them and hear what they thought
about the conference! I definitely made some great friends and can’t wait to go back to Annual
Conference next year!

I’m almost halfway through my internship at
church and it has been a great three weeks.
From making the weekly inserts to making sure
everything is ready for VBS, being in the
church office has been a fun and new learning
experience. I’ve seen what it’s like to take part
in the church in a bigger way than I usually do
and I’ve enjoyed it so much. I’ve enjoyed
getting to know more people at our church and
working with the staff. It’s been a great way to
spend my summer!

  • 1. First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood GOOD NEWS e-mail: nohofumc@pacbell.net JULY 2018 facebook.com/nohofumc1 www.nohofumc.com IN THIS ISSUE: • Welcome Pastor Steve • Annual Conference • Summer Events • Visitation Team GOOD NEWS is published monthly by First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood, California 91601 Phone (818) 763-8231 Rev. Grant Hagiya Bishop Rev. James Powell District Superintendent Rev. Steve Peralta Senior Pastor Congregation Ministers Jeff Thomas Director of Music Roger Eshleman Organist Nylean Rapinac Administrator Patty Kelsey Director, Program Ministries Tonya Peat Director, Outreach Ministries A NOTE FROM STAFF PARISH North Hollywood FUMC Staff Parish Relations Committee would like to extend our most sincere thanks and gratitude to Pastor Allison Mark for all of her hard work over the last six months. Pastor Allison came appointed as our Interim Pastor in January 2018 under difficult circumstances.  She did a fantastic job and added a sense of needed stability at our church.  It has been a pleasure working with her over this period of time and we wish her all of God's blessings as she transitions into her new appointment.  We are sure that she will be well received at her new church as she is truly passionate about her ministry and doing God's work to make the world a better place. Many Thanks to you Pastor Allison, husband Pastor Andy, Kaira and Amara. We will miss you all. We also would like to extend a warm welcome to our new senior pastor, Steve Peralta! Pastor Steve comes to us with a number of skills that will help us bolster areas of focus for us, such as building our youth ministry and reinvigorating our worship. We look forward to advancing our ministry with Pastor Steve, building on the strong foundation and work that we have already been doing. Currently, Pastor Steve is moving from his home in Santa Clarita to North Hollywood, as well as, moving into his study in the church office. We request that we give Pastor Steve time to settle in and become familiar with his new church home. Please be sure to come to worship and introduce yourself. The church office will be available to take appointments for meetings with Pastor Steve in the middle of the month. Pastor Steve, welcome to your new church family. We are excited to move forward together with you in mission and ministry. Blessings, NOHO FUMC SPRC
  • 2. HIGHLIGHTS OF WORSHIP June 3 - Today was the Second Sunday after Pentecost. Pastor Allison shared the children’s message and sermon this morning. Both messages were based on Hebrews 6:16-20 and her sermon was titled, “Restoring Balance,” which was part of her Transitions Sermon Series. We shared in the sacrament of communion today. June 10 - This morning we celebrated Choir Recognition Sunday! Charles Minetree donned a suit and bow tie and accompanied the choir on tuba. Patty asked the kids to assist with handing out gifts to the choir. Pastor Allison gave thanks to all members of the choir, Jeff & Roger. Each member of the choir received a bag of goodies and thank you note. Jeff and Libeck shared special music, singing a duet, “The Prayer.” Sandy Flemming read scripture to represent the choir. Pastor Allison’s sermon, “Beyond The Unknown,”was based on 2 Corinthians 4:13-5:1, which was about things we cannot see beyond the horizon. June 17 - Happy Father’s Day and the Fourth Sunday after Pentecost. All the gentlemen in attendance received a special gift. Pastor Allison, Patty Kelsey, Andrew Esposo, David Eshleman, and Daniella Lake, returned from Annual Conference in time to celebrate Father figures of all kinds with the congregation. We had a special moment of privilege to witness to the baptism of our sister in Christ, Judy Palmer. Scripture was read by new Dad, Cole Gerdes, who brought his newborn baby, Wyatt and his wife Tristen to church today. “Big Things on the Horizon,” was the title of Pastor Allison’s sermon that was based on 2 Corinthians 5:6-10 (11-13), 14-17. June 24 - It was a big Sunday today! This was Pastor Allison’s last Sunday in the pulpit and the service was full of many special moments. We enjoyed special music shared by Jodie Bowman and Jeff Thomas, who sang, “A Living Prayer,” in honor of her son, Sebastien’s baptism. We also welcomed new members, Jesse Boone, Eddy Faulkner, and Scott & Tonya Peat! Patty Kelsey shared a moment with children about the meaning of Aloha, not only as “hello and goodbye,” but also as a spirit and a way of life. Patty taught the kids how to hold a lei when presenting it as a gift and then gave each child a lei and asked the children to share a aloha, mahalo and hug to Pastor Allison. SPRC shared a word of thanks and presented Pastor Allison with a card signed by the entire congregation and also presented her with a fresh orchid lei. Patty Kelsey presented Pastor Allison with a handmade stole, made by Shirley Kurushima. The stole was made with material from the newly refurbished bride’s room and photos memories of Pastor Allison’s time with us. Pastor Allison floated off down the sanctuary aisle in her land speeder, down Tujunga to beautiful luncheon followed outside on our patio courtyard. It was a wonderful time, filled with gratitude and Aloha. So much love and appreciation was shared by all in attendance.

  • 5. Pastor Steve Peralta has served in ministry for over 20 years. He graduated from Fuller Theological Seminary in 1998 and has served churches in Huntington Beach, Santa Barbara, Thousand Oaks, and Valencia. He loves to preach, teach, and help people connect to God. He has served on the Board of Ordained Ministry for ten years and currently leads the Theology Team for Full-Connection.  When he isn’t pastoring, he is an avid cyclist, a lover of good food, and a semi-capable guitarist and vocalist. He enjoys the outdoors and adventurous travel. He also has embraced his inner nerd and love for the Star Wars Universe. As he gets to know NoHo, he hopes to help the church grow in its faith and hear God’s call to be in ministry to the surrounding community. We have Good News to share in a world that is hungry for love, wholeness, and a sense of purpose. Pastor Steve with Pastor Allison, Andrew Esposo, Daniella Lake, David Eshleman, & Patty Kelsey at Annual Conference. The Trustees are doing an inventory of Church keys. If you have an "R" or a "K" key and still need it, please tell Kathi Ellis.  If you no longer need the key, please return it to Kathi  818 761-2436.   Thanks! On June 20, 2018, at the UMW Tea, we gave a Special Mission Recognition Pin to Pastor Allison Mark.  We appreciate her loving time spent here and the gifts she shared with the Congregation.   Aloha!
  • 6. By Lynn Yoshizumi   The Valley Cultural Center and Councilman Paul Krekorian are presenting free concerts at North Hollywood Park, next to the Amelia Earhart Library, the 5 Saturdays in July as well as Sat, August 4. The concerts feature a variety of music with local talent opening each show and the headliners immediately following.   The music will be enjoyable whether you have heard of any of the local talent or the headliners, but you have heard of Luis Oliart. You know him as Director of the North Hollywood Interfaith Food Pantry, but Luis is also an entertainer. Luis and the Hinges will be the opening act on Sat, July 28th, featuring soulful rock and blues music. The headliner that night is Lisa Haley & the Zydekats, the world’s most beloved Americana/Cajun/Zydeco band.   The show begins at 7 pm so that night park your car at the church north parking lot at 6:30 pm and walk with your friends up Tujunga to No Ho Park.   You may bring blankets, low chairs (under 3 ft. in height), tarps and pillows. You may not use stakes to keep your blankets in place as they are a safety hazard. No grills or open flames of any kind are allowed in the park. Food and non- alcoholic beverages are permitted and a variety of food trucks will be ready at 6:30 pm. Please keep animals tethered and respect your neighbors by being mindful of your space and the view of others. By Patty Kelsey We have formally organized a Visitation Team. Our Shepards are: Nylean Rapinac, Lynn Yoshizumi, Jodi Smith, Judy Palmer, Chuck Schafer, Patty Kelsey, and our Pastor. The team takes time to visit the homebound, send a note or card, or phone call. Perhaps it is just to pick them up and take them to a social gathering. All contacts are logged to keep track of who is in need and to make sure we spread the visits out to all who are in need. • 8. Podcast: Our Fellow Church member and acolyte Daniella Lake is starting a podcast and needs your help! The podcast is titled “Life Told By a Stranger”. In the podcast, Daniella has a chat with strangers and not so strangers, and asks them all the same four questions about life. The purpose of it is to gain insight on life from people who have had different walks of life. Sound interesting? Daniella invites all of you to be on her podcast! Don’t be shy! Tell anyone who you think will be interested as well! See Daniella Lake for more details and to arrange recording dates.  Annual Conference: Cal -Pac Annual Conference was an amazing experience! It showed me a whole new side of the United Methodist Church! It was interesting to see how the church is not just about worship but it is a social, historical, and even political  institution. I was so happy to see how diverse our church is and how many people it takes to keep it running. We discussed many topics from the budget of annual conference to making certain churches historical sites. At Annual Conference, we voted on several different matters that will have an impact on the United Methodist Church as a whole. It was really nice to see this side of the church.  Another part of Annual Conference I enjoyed was being a youth lay voting member. I got to meet a lot of youths my age and some even younger. It was fun to spend time with them and hear what they thought about the conference! I definitely made some great friends and can’t wait to go back to Annual Conference next year!   By Daniella Lake I’m almost halfway through my internship at church and it has been a great three weeks. From making the weekly inserts to making sure everything is ready for VBS, being in the church office has been a fun and new learning experience. I’ve seen what it’s like to take part in the church in a bigger way than I usually do and I’ve enjoyed it so much. I’ve enjoyed getting to know more people at our church and working with the staff. It’s been a great way to spend my summer!
