Within the central DC, Tempest built a repair lab with dedicated personnel to ensure efficient and transparent tracking, repair and reporting.

The biggest challenge Network Operators face today
is cost effectively maintaining their installed base/3G
network. When able to reduce the operating cost of
maintaining a network, Operators are able to continue
to expand and upgrade their network, ultimately
providing a better service for their end customer.
Some of the costs of maintaining a network are clear,
while others are hidden. Some of the hidden repair
costs include turn-around-time (TAT), reliability, yield,
and asset/inventory visibility, which greatly affect the
efficiency and integrity of the network. By partnering
with a third party OEM-alternative supplier for repair
services, Network Operators are able to maximize their
operating budgets.

2. The first phase of the solution involved
establishing an on-site repair depot inside
the central DC to bring third party repair
in-house for power plant components that
were no longer under the OEM warranty. The
next and much larger phase included the
expansion to include the National Operator’s
3G/UMTS RAN equipment, not only for out-
of-warranty repair, but also for use with assets
designated for re-deployment and re-use as
part of the Operator’s 3G harvesting program.
As this process was implemented, repair was
initially performed at the Tempest Repair
Facility in Carrollton, TX, until the volume at
the customer’s DC ramped up. The customer-
based central DC team remains under the
management and technical direction of
Tempest’s repair experts, to ensure quality,
high yield and the most current skills and
training are provided.
With a dedicated repair program in place at
the National Operator, the existing logistics
processes at the National Operator were
utilized. The centralized location of Tempest’s
repair lab in the DC allowed markets across
the country to send all their defective parts
to a single processing warehouse where,
after OEM warranty verification, any out-of-
warranty eligible components are repaired in-
house. Upon repair and testing, the central DC
processes shipments back to the originating
market, leveraging existing processes for the
return and repair of faulty equipment across
the United States, improving ship times and
simplifying logistics. Reporting became more
transparent as repair status was available at all
stages of the process.
Tempest’s proven repair program expertise for
third party telecommunications infrastructure
reduced the National Operator’s operating
expenses when they negotiated to move
hardware repair from the OEM to a third
party. With the saved operating expenses, the
National Operator was able to maximize their
budget and focus on 4G growth.
