4. Some Requirements for theAnalyst to be Efficient
One of the tasks of an analyst is supporting your end users
Like you didn’t already know that
They need to ensure that end users:
Have a working computer
Can log onto that computer
Have network access
Have the software that they need to do their jobs
Have access to printers and other network resources
Analysts don’t really care what tools they use to get this done, as long as the tools are easy to use,
meet their needs, and get the job done efficiently
Of course, the fewer the number of tools required, the better for them
5. EndUserSupport usingConfiguration Manager
Features of Configuration Manager that facilitate end user support include:
‘User to computer’ account lookup – users don’t always know the name of their computer
Computer properties – view the last time, and the method, that the computer was discovered
Client activity – view when the client last communicated with the Configuration Manager site
Client health information – is the client currently healthy, and has it had any health issues?
Hardware inventory – the ability to see the attributes of a computer, including software already installed
Deployment status – has targeted software installed, failed, in progress, requirements not met, etc.
Remote Control, Remote Desktop, Remote Assistance – whatever ‘tool’ is appropriate to access the end user’s
computer remotely
A very common support case for use of the Configuration ManagerConsole is to add an end user’s
computer to a collection that has a specific application targeted to it
6. EndUserSupport usingConfiguration Manager (2)
Of course, Configuration Manager has role-based security to help control what access any
administrative user, including the analyst, has in the console
Can implement security roles, security scopes, and collections to restrict access
The built-in security role “RemoteTools Operator” is designed for the analyst to use remote access
tools to connect remotely to a client
The built-in security role “Read OnlyAnalyst” is designed for the analyst to see, but not modify, all
objects and status in the site
Implementing proper RBA can help prevent ‘accidents’ from happening, or ‘exploration’ from
occurring
7. Cireson Remote Manage appOverview
The first ever Cireson app for Configuration Manager!
Features of the Remote Manage app include the ability to:
View computer information
Initiate the most common Configuration Manager client actions remotely
Initiate common client tools
Such as connecting to the client log folder or C$
Add and remove the computer from collections
SupportsConfiguration Manager’s role-based administration
View, repair and remove installed software
Install or remove software that appears in Software Center
View or install software updates targeted to the computer
View, start or terminate processes running
View and manage printers for the remote computer
View, start and stop services
8. Cireson Remote Manage appOverview (2)
Additional actions available include:
Remote reboot or shutdown
View RSoP from Group Policy
Launching remote consoles, such as Computer Management, EventViewer, User Management
Launch remote tools, such as Remote Control, PowerShell, Remote Desktop
Verify, repair or resetWMI
Identify system uptime and pending reboot status
Identify the logged on user
All without having to start the Configuration ManagerConsole
This reduces chances of accidents happening in the console
Also reduces the number of consoles connecting to the site database, thus improving performance and
reduces load on SMS Provider
And, maybe best of all, it’s FREE!
9. Cireson Remote Manage app Requirements
In order to use the Remote Manage app, the analyst requires:
Ability to access the Configuration ManagerConsole (don’t need to have it installed unless
you want to use the Remote Control feature)
Must be added as a Configuration ManagerAdministrative User in order to connect to
the SMS Provider
.NET Framework 4.5.1 or later
RSAT must be installed to use the “Group Policy” feature
Remote Manage app can be installed and used without RSAT if not needing to use the
Group Policy feature
Administrative rights to clients
In order to connect to a remote computer, the remote client requires:
Network connectivity, including name resolution
Windows Remote Management 3.0 or later configured
Enabled as well as allowed through any firewall
Also Remote Event Log access through the firewall
10. Installation of theCireson Remote Manage app
Installation of the Remote Manage app is very easy
It is a small download:
Only 3.5MB
It is a simple .exe–based installation
Simply run “Remote Manage app Setup.exe”
Can use “/S /v/qn” switches to make the installation silent
The .exe will extract theWindows Installer file and launch it
Register your user information
Designate the installation folder (defaults to
“Program Files (x86)CiresonRemote Manage app”)
Adds the “Remote Manage app” to the “Cireson” group on the Start screen
12. Using theCireson Remote Manage app
You can launch the Remote Manage app from the Start screen
It will then allow you to specify the site server (SMS Provider computer) as well as the Configuration
Manager client to query
You can also launch the tool from command prompt with parameters for the two computers:
ConfigMgrClientTools.exe client SMSProvider
Once started, the Remote Manage app has a lot of features that analysts can take advantage of in place of
using the Configuration Manager Console to support users
Not loading the Configuration Manager Console has many advantages:
Fewer computers to update when a new cumulative update or version is installed
Fewer consistent connections to the SMS Provider
Less chance of accidental changes to your environment
Less exploration of areas the user should not have access to
13. Demonstration

14. Remote Manageapp forConfiguration Manager HealthChecks
End of the year IT lockdowns are a great time to do a health check on your Configuration
Manager environment
Evaluate site stability, performance, effectiveness
Evaluate distribution and deployment statistics
Verify site and component status messages and logs
Validate expected number of clients are active and healthy
The Remote Manage app can help with the investigations regarding clients that you feel should
be active and healthy, however may not report as such
Can verify the client is online
Can connect to the logs share and initiate actions
Can forceWMI reset or repair
15. Summary
