For theatrical and VOD brands, most of the clips were
videos of medium duration (1-3 minutes). Peaks of
interest were noticed before a movie’s release date, both
6 months (Deadpool, Zoolander 2) and 2 months out
from the release (The Last Witch Hunter). Finally, a peak
of activity is also noticed at the point of release (Hitman:
Agent 47, The Fantastic Four).
HBO (Sense8, Westland, Vinyl) and Netflix (The Narcos,
Longmire) followed a similar strategy to communicate
about their new series. On the other hand, behind-the-
scenes and making-of videos were preferred to
announce new seasons.
Gaming brands tend to include gamers more and more
into the game universe. Thus, the best performing videos
in gaming showed official trailers together with in-depth
information and playthroughs that highlight the games’
specificities in terms of plot and design. Therefore,
gaming videos are longer on average than theatrical and
VOD videos.
Particular attention is payed to game design in order to
make the gaming experience as immersive and
realistic as possible. Gamers’ choices throughout the
game may have an impact on the content of the scenario
(Until Dawn) or result in customized levels and missions
(Super Mario Maker) for the player to achieve.
Gamescom, the biggest European videogame fair, was held in
August. It contributed to raise all brands’ activity (30 more
videos were published) but did not prevent interactions from
dropping (1.1M less interactions).
Whereas YouTube is typically dedicated to teasers and
addresses a large audience, Instagram is more focused on the
fan community. The presence of gaming videos on the latter
remained low.
SUMMARY
For the second month in a row, theatrical and VOD brands
saw an overall decrease in terms of views and interactions.
The best performance goes to Deadpool (20th Century Fox)
and its three trailers which gathered 25,7M views and 723K
interactions. Marvel and Universal Pictures surpassed Sony
Pictures while Warner Bros, which ranked 1st in July,
dropped to the 13th position in August.
HBO gained ground this month, as August was a particularly
favourable time for launching new series.
Views represent YouTube views as extracted from the Teads Labs; the interaction rate is calculated as the sum
of YT and FB likes, comments and shares divided by YouTube Views.

POPULARITY MAPPING
Bubble size : Popularity
Compared to July, the top brands remained the
same: 20th Century Fox, Marvel, Universal
Pictures and Disney. Warner Bros, which
performed really well in July, dropped significantly.
Reduced brand activity in August also provided
lower-listed brands with the opportunity to
improve their ranking. Thus, the best evolutions
go to FilmFour (+5), Anchor Bay, and Vertigo
Films (+4) but none of those brands exceeded the
27th position.
HBO’s performance was also improved. The
brand was the 3rd most active this month, and its
new series (Vinyl, Westland) were successfully
introduced to viewers.

•  20th Century Fox was by far the most successful brand in August, as the brand issued 8 out of the top 10 videos. In particular,
the 3 trailers for the action comics Deadpool all achieved top performances in terms of views and healthy interaction rates. The
film is set to be released in February 2016.
•  Paramount Pictures’s rather short teaser for the comedy Zoolander 2 stands out with a very high interaction rate.

The number of views was rather low for all brands, since the best video topped the ranking with only 1.7M views (vs. 3M in July).
HBO’s campaign for its upcoming series and new episodes, expected for the end of 2015, performed very well. Thus, 4 videos
published by the brand ranked in the top 10, gathering 86% of the views and 69% of the interactions in this ranking. On average,
series performed better than VOD movies, and trailers were published a rather long time in advance.
Despite a low number of views (200K), the official trailer for Netflix’s original crime and drama series The Narcos remains in the top
10. The series is to be released on October 28th. Finally, three videos out of Fox’s twelve extracts from its show So you think you
can dance made it to the top 10.

Disney was the most popular brand on Instagram this month, especially if considered together with Pixar. The top video
featured toys inspired by the Aladdin universe and gathered more than 8 times more interactions than all the other top videos
put together.
Netflix’s performance was as good in August as it was in July, with five of the brands’ videos appearing in the top 10. The
brand continued to build on a set of funny videos, as well as dedicating two creatives to its upcoming September
programming.

20th Century Fox gathered 46% share of views
(59K views), especially thanks to the three
Deadpool trailers. Fox Broadcasting, on the
other hand, gathered only 5% of share of views
with 199 videos published.
Warner Bros’s share of views dropped
dramatically (from 52% share of views in July to
3% in August). The brand had particularly
outperformed in July thanks to the trailers of
Batman VS. Superman and Suicide Squad.

The number of interactions dropped by almost
three quarters in August compared to July (from
4M to 1.4M).
Paramount improved its performance in
interactions, rising from the 7th to the 2nd position
thanks to one single video (teaser for Zoolander
2). Warner Bros’s share of interactions was
reduced to almost nil and the brand left the top
10.

Six months before Deadpool’s theatrical release (expected on
the 5th of September 2016), 20th Century Fox published three
videos: an official trailer and two alternative versions. All of them
are already top videos, both in views and combined views and
interactions. The best one is the Red Band Trailer which was
watched over 25M times.

best brand in terms of activity, popularity and
performance. Rockstar Games and Ubisoft
respectively rank 2nd and 3rd. These brands
kept the same level of activity as they had in
July.
Electronic Arts and Namco Bandai entered
the ranking, respectively at the 5th and 9th
position, thus impacting lower-listed brands
which left the ranking.

TOP VIDEOS – COMBINED VIEWS & INTERACTION RATES

PlayStation published 5 of the 10 top videos. Nintendo comes second as the brand owns three of the best performing videos,
including a long creative (The Super Mario Maker Overview) showing how to play the game. All the other top videos were rather
short (2:30 minutes on average).
PlayStation’s three reveal trailers for Mafia III, Shovel Knight and Dark Souls III were the ones that triggered the most interactions.

•  Gaming brands still have a limited Instagram presence. The platform is mostly used by brands to keep special bonds with
fans.
•  Top videos from Ubisoft and Bethesda covered the Gamescom 2015 fair in Cologne, whereas Xbox celebrated its

59% of share of views. A quarter of the remaining
views are owned by Nintendo (25% share),
followed by Ubisoft which slightly improved its
position compared to July (reaching 8% share of
views).

As a result, PlayStation kept the first position

  • 7. Theatrical & VOD Gaming 32 BRANDS, August 2015 data: 12 BRANDS, August 2015 data: For theatrical and VOD brands, most of the clips were videos of medium duration (1-3 minutes). Peaks of interest were noticed before a movie’s release date, both 6 months (Deadpool, Zoolander 2) and 2 months out from the release (The Last Witch Hunter). Finally, a peak of activity is also noticed at the point of release (Hitman: Agent 47, The Fantastic Four). HBO (Sense8, Westland, Vinyl) and Netflix (The Narcos, Longmire) followed a similar strategy to communicate about their new series. On the other hand, behind-the- scenes and making-of videos were preferred to announce new seasons. Gaming brands tend to include gamers more and more into the game universe. Thus, the best performing videos in gaming showed official trailers together with in-depth information and playthroughs that highlight the games’ specificities in terms of plot and design. Therefore, gaming videos are longer on average than theatrical and VOD videos. Particular attention is payed to game design in order to make the gaming experience as immersive and realistic as possible. Gamers’ choices throughout the game may have an impact on the content of the scenario (Until Dawn) or result in customized levels and missions (Super Mario Maker) for the player to achieve. Gamescom, the biggest European videogame fair, was held in August. It contributed to raise all brands’ activity (30 more videos were published) but did not prevent interactions from dropping (1.1M less interactions). Whereas YouTube is typically dedicated to teasers and addresses a large audience, Instagram is more focused on the fan community. The presence of gaming videos on the latter remained low. SUMMARY For the second month in a row, theatrical and VOD brands saw an overall decrease in terms of views and interactions. The best performance goes to Deadpool (20th Century Fox) and its three trailers which gathered 25,7M views and 723K interactions. Marvel and Universal Pictures surpassed Sony Pictures while Warner Bros, which ranked 1st in July, dropped to the 13th position in August. HBO gained ground this month, as August was a particularly favourable time for launching new series. Views represent YouTube views as extracted from the Teads Labs; the interaction rate is calculated as the sum of YT and FB likes, comments and shares divided by YouTube Views.

Warner Bros, which performed really well in July, dropped significantly. Reduced brand activity in August also provided lower-listed brands with the opportunity to improve their ranking. Thus, the best evolutions go to FilmFour (+5), Anchor Bay, and Vertigo Films (+4) but none of those brands exceeded the 27th position. HBO’s performance was also improved. The brand was the 3rd most active this month, and its new series (Vinyl, Westland) were successfully introduced to viewers. In particular, the 3 trailers for the action comics Deadpool all achieved top performances in terms of views and healthy interaction rates. HBO’s campaign for its upcoming series and new episodes, expected for the end of 2015, performed very well. Thus, 4 videos published by the brand ranked in the top 10, gathering 86% of the views and 69% of the interactions in this ranking. On average, series performed better than VOD movies, and trailers were published a rather long time in advance. Despite a low number of views (200K), the official trailer for Netflix’s original crime and drama series The Narcos remains in the top 10. The series is to be released on October 28th. A quarter of the remaining views are owned by Nintendo (25% share), followed by Ubisoft which slightly improved its position compared to July (reaching 8% share of views).
