Editor's Notes

  1. I LET THEM WORK ON SLIDE 8 ALL DAY. I GAVE THEM THE OPTION TO WORK IN THEIR GROUP THE WHOLE TIME, OR LISTEN NTO LECTURE. THEY DECIDED TO WORK IN YOUR GROUP. WE DID A CONCEPT MAP ON THE BOARD IN CLASS.
  2. Small group communicationHow many people? What is it?Small group communication is 3-9 people who establish communication as the essential process within their group. Overall goal: Group members pay attention to each other and coordinate their behavior to accomplish the group’s assignment. Many companies use self-managed teams which are groups of workers with different skills who work together to produce something or solve a problem. Inclusion: Humans in general have a need to belong. In public speaking many people feel insecure or vulnerable while presenting a topic, but group speeches will provide a sense of security and belonging. Affection: Need to love and be loved. With this group work, you will build a relationship or friendship that will provide emotional support.Control: The ability to influence our environment. Group work will allow you to accomplish the task more effectively, thus satisfying our desire for control.
  3. Responsibility: all group members should be sharing tasks of preparing, organizing and presenting the speech. Interdependent: All groups members are providing independent information that the group outcome depends on. Interactive: With group presentations, usually discussion among presenters and the audience is a little more free flowing. Coordinated: No only do you have to worry about your own material’s structure and organization, you need to be concerned with how your message fits with the context of the other ideas.
  4. On this slide I’m only going to touch on one skill, because this kind-of overlaps with the common elements of a group presentation. One skill that may be texted while working within your groups is conflict resolution. If you are having problems with a group member, you need to try to work it out within your group or with your group member before you talk to me – not because I don’t care, but because it is part of the process of group work.
  5. Divide the labor – this means that you may have people who take on an “expert roll” at different stages of the project. APA, transitions, intro, conclusion … also think about the labor that day – who is going to work the ppt, pass out handouts, etc.
  6. Symposium:Group members divide a large topic into smaller topics for coordinated ind. presentationsModerator – intro/conclusion, transitions, questionsPanels: Focus less on info between presenter and the audience, more on interaction Debates: Where a controversial issue or question is usually presented as a pro or con constructive presentations: you present for and against an idea rebuttal presentation: presenters respond to an argument raised by the opposing side status quo – challenging the way things are currently done
