2. What is Pelvic Inflammatory Disease??????
It is infection in a woman’s reproductive organs. In 2013 about 88,000
women was diagnosed with P.I.D. This disease is often caused by
sexually transmitted infections (S.T.I). When left untreated it becomes a
disease that can cause problems for a woman to get pregnant, cause
complications during pregnancies, and long term pelvis pain. P.I.D can
come on fast and can be extremely painful with fever if it is caused by
Gonorrhea. ( Chlamydia can also cause P.I.D)
A woman can get P.I.D if bacteria move up the vagina to the cervix into
the reproductive organs. Many types of bacteria can cause P.I.D but the
most common are Gonorrhea and Chlamydia. You can also get P.I.D
from douches because they can push back up into a woman
reproductive organs.
3. Signs and symptoms:
• Pain in lower abdomen (this is the most common symptom)
• Fever (100.4F or higher)
• Vaginal discharge that may smell foul
• Painful sex
• Pain when urinating
• Irregular menstrual periods
• Pain in the upper right abdomen (this is rare)
4. How is P.I.D treated???
• Most cases that are not left untreated they are treated with
antibiotics
• Untreated P.I.D can lead to infertility ectopic pregnancy and chronic
pelvic pain
