Matariki
During Matariki we celebrate our unique place in the world.
We give respect to the whenua on which we live,
and admiration to our mother earth Papatüänuku.
Throughout Matariki we learn about those who came before us.
Our history. Our family. Our bones.
Matariki signals growth. It’s a time of change.
It’s a time to prepare, and a time of action.
During Matariki we acknowledge what we have
and what we have to give.
Matariki celebrates the diversity of life.
It’s a celebration of culture, language, spirit and people.
Matariki is our Aotearoa Pacific New Year.
Matariki 2014
• There are many different celebrations for
Matariki.
• Activity themes are offered here as a guide for
those wishing to celebrate Matariki.
• This framework represents the key themes of
traditional Matariki celebrations,however it is
in no way meant to undermine or replace
existing tribal celebrations for Matariki.
Papatuanuku
Te Whakanui: Our Home the Earth
• When the stars of Matariki were clear and bright it
was thought that the year ahead would be warm
and the harvest plentiful. When the stars appeared
blurred and hazy, a cold and lean year was
expected.
• Matariki is a time to prepare the whenua on which
we live.
• With Spring on its way, Matariki is the perfect time
to make plans for the land and for the new spring
garden.
• It’s also a good time to learn about the land and the
forest.
Whakapapa.
Pinepine te kura, hau te kura:
Acknowledge the family
• A focus on our whakapapa during Matariki
gives us a better understanding of who we are,
where we have come from and where we are
going.
• It is also a great way to bring whänau together
to share stories and knowledge.
Ranginui
Mauri tü, Mauri ora: Looking Skyward
• Matariki is one of many significant stars in our
southern skies.
• The night sky contains massive numbers of
stars, which were used by Mäori as a way to
calculate time and seasons, to navigate oceans,
to preserve knowledge and stories, to maintain
customary practices, and to inspire action and
achievement.
• It’s also a good time to dream, and to set goals
for the future.

Sharing and Kindness
• Giving is a part of many cultural celebrations
all around the world.
• Matariki is a time to give what you have to
spare to those who need it.
• It’s about finding something of your self to offer
others.
Hakari - Te Whakangahau
Känapanapa mai ana a Matariki
Matariki Shines on the New Year
• The first new moon after the rise of Matariki,
signaled the start of the New Year celebrations.
• Action songs, karanga and prayers.
• With the food stores full, feasts were held and
attended by prominent visitors.
• This night starts our New Year. It is a time to
gather, to feast and to celebrate the next year
together.
Matariki is a time to prepare; to learn, to share
ideas, and to celebrate the future.
He whakanui a Matariki

Matariki is a celebration of
culture, language, spirit and people.
