A ‘poha’ or kelp bag. Used
in the ‘old days’, as well as
today, by one whanau from
Awarua, to preserve the
tītī (mutton birds).

Ko Takitimu te Mauka
Ko Murihiku te Whenua
Although our Whakatauaki refers to the Summer
(that we really didn’t have for many days!) the
harakeke and tikauka certainly had masses of
bloom this year. Some say it is a tohu (sign) that
the Summer will be good and that the Tītī season
will be a succes, the birds plentiful and fat.
On a haerenga (trip) to Piopiotahi (Milford)
recently I saw Tītī feeding on ‘kai’ while at sea on
the West Coast. They have been spotted locally
too. Amazing birds, the journey they make every
year and return to the Southern Islands to nest and
rear their young.
