STUDY OF ADOLESENCE
BEHAVIOUR IN THEIR NATURAL
SETTINGS-OBSERVATION
METHOD.
K.Thangavel,
Assistant Professor,
Thiagarajar College of Preceptors,
Madurai-9.
Meaning of Adolescence :
â€ĸThe word ‘adolescence’ comes from the Latin Verb
“adolescence” which means ‘to grow’. Adolescence begins
with the onset of puberty and lasts till the beginning of
adulthood.
â€ĸThe changes are so extensive that some people call this as
second birth.
â€ĸStanley Hall called this period as “Period of storm and
stress” a time when the individual is erratic , unstable and
unpredictable.
METHOD OF STUDYING LEARNER’S BEHAVIOUR AT THE
ADOLESCENT STAGE:
â€ĸAdolescent’s thought becomes more abstract, logical and
idealistic: they become more capable of examining their own
thoughts, other’s thoughts, and what others are thinking about
them.
â€ĸPsychologists use a variety of methods like observation,
interview, experimentation and case study to collect data.
INTRODUCTION
ī‚§ The observation method is most commonly used method in
behavioural science.
ī‚§ It is also a process of recording the behaviour patterns of
people, objects, and occurrences without questioning or
communicating with them.
MEANING
ī‚§ Observation means viewing or seeing. We go
on observing something or other while we are
awake. Most of such observations are just
casual and have no specific purpose. But
observation as a method of data collection is
different from such casual viewing.
DEFINITION
ī‚§ GORMAN and CLAYTON define observation studies as
those that “involve the systematic recording of
observable phenomena or behaviour in a natural
setting”.
ī‚§ MARSHALL and ROSSMAN (1989) define observation as
“the systematic description of events, behaviours, and
artifacts in the social setting chosen for study”.
Why to observe?
ī‚§ To study people in their ‘natural setting’.
ī‚§ It provides a deeper, richer, understanding than survey
work .
ī‚§ Observation enables the researcher to study groups of
people together.
Types of observation
ī‚§ Participant Observation.
ī‚§ Non-participant Observation.
ī‚§ Direct Observation.
ī‚§ Indirect Observation.
ī‚§ Controlled Observation.
ī‚§ Uncontrolled Observation.
Participant Observation
ī‚§ Here the observer has direct contact with the
group of people they are observing.
Non-participant observation
ī‚§ The researcher does not have direct contact
with the people being observed.
Direct Observation
ī‚§ Actual behavior are observed.
Indirect Observation
ī‚§ Result or physical traces are observed.
Controlled Observation
ī‚§ Behavior is observed under controlled
laboratory conditions.
Uncontrolled Observation
ī‚§ Here spontaneous behavior is recorded in a
natural setting.
Advantages of observation
method
ī‚§ Reliable and objective.
ī‚§ Natural setting.
ī‚§ Useful for young and shy children.
ī‚§ No need of equipment or tool.
ī‚§ Useful for individuals as well as groups.
ī‚§ Immediate detection of problems.
ī‚§ Most direct measure of behaviour.
ī‚§ Provides direct information.
ī‚§ Easy to complete, saves time.
Disadvantages of observaion
method
ī‚§ Subjectivity.
ī‚§ Less accuracy.
ī‚§ Interference.
ī‚§ Objective recording.
ī‚§ Lack of competency.
ī‚§ Unnatural situation.
ī‚§ Expensive.
ī‚§ Slow and laborious.
ī‚§ Biased.
ī‚§ Lack of cooperation from peoples.
ī‚§ Favoritism.
