2. Meaning of Adolescence :
âĸThe word âadolescenceâ comes from the Latin Verb
âadolescenceâ which means âto growâ. Adolescence begins
with the onset of puberty and lasts till the beginning of
adulthood.
âĸThe changes are so extensive that some people call this as
second birth.
âĸStanley Hall called this period as âPeriod of storm and
stressâ a time when the individual is erratic , unstable and
unpredictable.
3. METHOD OF STUDYING LEARNERâS BEHAVIOUR AT THE
ADOLESCENT STAGE:
âĸAdolescentâs thought becomes more abstract, logical and
idealistic: they become more capable of examining their own
thoughts, otherâs thoughts, and what others are thinking about
them.
âĸPsychologists use a variety of methods like observation,
interview, experimentation and case study to collect data.
4. INTRODUCTION
ī§ The observation method is most commonly used method in
behavioural science.
ī§ It is also a process of recording the behaviour patterns of
people, objects, and occurrences without questioning or
communicating with them.
5. MEANING
ī§ Observation means viewing or seeing. We go
on observing something or other while we are
awake. Most of such observations are just
casual and have no specific purpose. But
observation as a method of data collection is
different from such casual viewing.
6. DEFINITION
ī§ GORMAN and CLAYTON define observation studies as
those that âinvolve the systematic recording of
observable phenomena or behaviour in a natural
settingâ.
ī§ MARSHALL and ROSSMAN (1989) define observation as
âthe systematic description of events, behaviours, and
artifacts in the social setting chosen for studyâ.
7. Why to observe?
ī§ To study people in their ânatural settingâ.
ī§ It provides a deeper, richer, understanding than survey
work .
ī§ Observation enables the researcher to study groups of
people together.
15. Advantages of observation
method
ī§ Reliable and objective.
ī§ Natural setting.
ī§ Useful for young and shy children.
ī§ No need of equipment or tool.
ī§ Useful for individuals as well as groups.
ī§ Immediate detection of problems.
ī§ Most direct measure of behaviour.
ī§ Provides direct information.
ī§ Easy to complete, saves time.
16. Disadvantages of observaion
method
ī§ Subjectivity.
ī§ Less accuracy.
ī§ Interference.
ī§ Objective recording.
ī§ Lack of competency.
ī§ Unnatural situation.
ī§ Expensive.
ī§ Slow and laborious.
ī§ Biased.
ī§ Lack of cooperation from peoples.
ī§ Favoritism.
