2. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SELF-CONCEPT
• Part of what is developing in children as they grow
is the fundamental cognitive part of the self, known
as the self-concept. The self-concept is a
knowledge representation that contains knowledge
about us, including our beliefs about our
personality traits, physical characteristics, abilities,
values, goals, and roles, as well as the knowledge
that we exist as individuals.
3. Physical charateristics – are an important
component of the self-concept, and they are
mentioned by many people when they describe
themselves.
Personal characteristics – is made up of
personality traits, the specific and stable personality
characteristics that describe an individual.
Social – for example, memberships in the social
groups that we belong to and care about.
5. Body
–Physical characteristics are defining traits or features of
a person's body. These are aspects of appearance that
are visually apparent to others, even with no other
information about the person. They can include a variety
of things. Hair and facial features play a big role but
aren't the whole picture.
Emotion
–Emotional experiences have three components: a
subjective experience, a physiological response and a
behavioral or expressive response. Feelings arise from an
emotional experience. Because a person is conscious of
the experience, this is classified in the same category as
hunger or pain.
6. Social
–Social identity groups are usually defined by some
physical, social, and mental characteristics of
individuals. Examples of social identities are
race/ethnicity, gender, social class/socioeconomic
status, sexual orientation, (dis)abilities, and
religion/religious beliefs.
Mind
–The mind is an abstract concept used to
characterize thoughts, feelings, subjective states,
and self-awareness that presumably arise from the
brain.
7. Spiritual
–The word “spirit” is derived from the Latin words
“spiritus” (meaning breath, courage, vigor, or soul)
and the word “spirare” (meaning to breathe).
Five characteristics of spirituality include: meaning,
value, transcendence, connecting (with oneself,
others, God/supreme power and the environment),
and becoming (the growth and progress in life
