2. Town of Pontecagnano
The town of Pontecagnano Faiano (also known simply as
Pontecagnano) is located in the south-east area of our region
Campania, approx. 10km away from Salerno.
Our area dates back to Roman times when the city of Picentia
stood in the place and was destroyed by the Romans after the
Second Punic War.
We have a river that surrounds our town, is called "Picentino"
in the north side.
This is a pic of our main
way to enter our town which
River Picentino flows
under the bridge.

3. The Town Hall
Since 1775, our town was formed by 3 sub-towns named Ponte,
Cagnano and Faiano and were all bonded together as a giant
neighborhood of Salerno.
After Burbons reign, during 1806 a small group of citizens of
Montecorvino and nearby create a movement to found our
autonomous town with 200 people living in it.
Our Town Hall was late founded after a Regio Decree on June 18th,
1911.

6. The old village of Faiano
Town's name derives from the word fajo, meaning beech in
Neapolitan, and is referred to a beechwood.
Located on an area rich of thermal waters, still known in
Ancient Roman era, the town counts a spring named Sette
Bocche (Seven Mouths).
Faiano is a hilltown that lies on the road linking Pontecagnano
(4 km). It is located below the Picentini mountain range and
the homonym regional park.
7. Our History / Museum of Etruscans
The area of Pontecagnano was settled as early as the Copper
Age(circa 3500-2300 BC), as testified by the archaeological
excavations of two sanctuaries and two necropolises. In the
9th-8th centuries BC remains belonging to the Villanovan
Culture, predecessor to the Etruscans, have been found.
The Etruscan center was perhaps called Amina and dated to
the 6th century BC. At the height of its power it ruled all the
land from Salerno to the Silaurus (Sele) River. It was known for
a temple of the Argive Juno reputedly built by Jason. Here, in
268 BC, the Romans built a new town, Picentia, to house a
nucleus of deported Piceni.
8. Why our town is famous?
Back in the old days Pontecagnano was a famous industrial
area for some old Italian companies.
We had CIRIO, a famous Italian canned tomato company near
the river Picentino now closed for breakdown and still today
we have D’AMICO, a food preserve company.
Also the town was famous for having one of the biggest
tobacco company in the Italy.
