3. INTRODUCTION-Need for metro
• PublicTransport System is an efficient user of space and with reduced level of air and noise
pollution.
• As the population of a KOCHI grows, share of public transport, whether road or rail-based,
should increase.
• In cities like Kochi where roads do not have adequate width and which cater to mixed
traffic conditions comprising slow and fast moving vehicles, road transport can optimally
carry 8,000 persons per hour per direction .
• When traffic density increases beyond this level average speed of vehicles comes down,
journey time increases, air population goes up and commuters are put to increased level, of
inconvenience.
• With growing population and mega development plans coming up for this port city, the
travel demand is expected to grow steeply.
• With inadequate public transport services, passengers will shift to private modes, which is
already evident from the high ownership trends in the region. This will not only aggravate
the congestion on the city roads but will also increase the pollution level.
• Road-based public transport, therefore, can not meet this demand.

11. Strengths:
1. The company holds the monopoly to design, construct
and execute the idea of a metro rail transportation,
system in the city of Kochi.
2. No other company or organization exists in
competition with KMRL within Kochi for the same kind of
service in the city.
3. KMRL has the support from DMRC and BMRC
Weakness:
• KMRL is a young organization and an Organization which is still in its
project phase.
• One of the projects have been operational and hence the company
does not still have a source of income
• The constant change in policies brings about confusion at some
extend within the organization among departments.
• The chaos causes differences in execution within the offices which in
turn reflects in the work sites.
• The disability to handle deputation staff.
• .
Opportunities:
1.The organization has various other ventures like the
water metro project and the Kochi smart mission
project, the chances of profit margin increases.
2.Better boats, air conditioned for affordable prices are
a huge plus point in Kochi as the city is extremely humid
and, moreover at near the water bodies.
3.KMRL also takes up voluntary responsibility of
cleaning up the water bodies for the water metro project
and also does some CSR activities for the society.
Threats/Challenges:
1. A constant comparison to Delhi METRO could rust down
the specialties of Kochi Metro as the prior is well
established and running successfully.
2.The agitation by the civilians with regard to blocks at
roads due to the construction work of metro lines is also
defaming the organization and could affect the larger
outcome of the service
3.The usual mentality of the city's crowd of avoiding public
transport can also become a major threat to the
functioning of the service as profits would only rise with
maximum utilization of the rail service by the public
