I am not here to judge others. How they conduct their business is their decision. I am here to tell you that the “secret sauce” behind proposal pricing and invoice doesn’t exist at Orange Tree. We believe that we are only as good as our last background screen. Operating under this mantra creates a different experience for our clients.
Our pricing and our work are very visible to our clients.

We do not markup fees from our vendors. We call these fees “pass through” fees because that’s what they are – a cost for a search levied upon us and passed at the same cost to our clients. We define our services, scopes, and orders in plain language and do not bury deviations in the bowels of user agreements and pages of exhibits. We meet with our clients following the agreement cycle to comb through our proposal to ensure that our client’s day-to-day users of our services clearly understand what they will receive. We meet with our clients on the first invoice cycle to ensure complete accuracy and understanding of the billing.
To be completely honest, 12 months ago I assumed that all background screeners took this approach to business. Talking with hundreds of clients during this time, I have found out that this isn’t the case. I have learned of situations in which statutory fees have been marked up. I have seen terms specified such that “unlimited alias searches are conducted on the names the applicant provided and that additional names found by locator services will be billed at a la carte pricing.” I have seen commitments to conduct alias searches for criminal searches only to see invoices in which the aliases were run against the federal search but not the county. Finally, just last week I heard from a client who’s provider ran an OIG search only on the last name that the candidate provided and hadn’t recommended at least a last name alias search. I can assure you that healthcare organizations can ill afford to hire people who are on such lists. And, of course, none of you can.
What does this have to do with the industry life cycle? When it gets tougher to differentiate, tougher to win, tougher to grow the business, it’s been my experience that some companies look to different means for making numbers. A common way to do this is the “shell game”. Companies bury miscellaneous charges into their agreements.
There isn’t anything illegal with this approach to business. Buyer beware is the message.
