Energy efficiency is using less
energy to achieve the same
• Energy efficiency first: the energy you don’t
the cheapest.
• Save up to 10% on your energy bills by
implementing no-cost and low-cost energy
efficiency measures.

Electricity
33%
Transport
35%
Energy Use
18 www.seai.ie
ReduceYour Use: Heating and Cooling
 Air conditioning can double
your energy bill
 Heating costs increase by 8%
for every 1°C increase
 30% of heating costs are
preventable
 Turn off AC and open windows
 Cooling set to 24 °C
 Reduce heating by 2°C could save
€160 on a €1,000 heating bill
 Heating set to 19°C
 Seal draughts and fit spring-loaded
door closures
19 www.seai.ie
ReduceYour Use: Transport
 Is the journey necessary?
What are your options?
 Aggressive driving = 12%
increase fuel consumption
 25% reduction in tyre
pressure = 1.5% increase in
fuel use
 Additional weight = more
fuel used
 Encourage teleconferencing
 Shift to public transport, cycling or
walking
 Slow down! Reduce your speed from
120 kph to 100 kph = save 25% fuel use
 Check your tyres and maintain
accurate pressure
 Empty your boot, remove unnecessary
items and roof rack
20 www.seai.ie
ReduceYour Use: Appliances and Lighting
 Lighting can account for 40% of
a building's energy use
 One external flood light running
for 12 hours every night can
cost €250 a year to run
 46% of a business's electricity is
used outside of operating hours
 Get everyone involved, label switches
“Switch off”

room layout
 Consider installing lighting sensors
 Find your big energy users and check
settings and operating hours
 Switch off, use eco settings and power
saving mode

Editor's Notes

  1. Aine
  2. These are the partners that formed part of our steering group and advised us as we developed the Toolkit
  3. This is the homepage – with a prominent “get started” button to lead users straight into the carbon calculator tool
  4. The calculator will ask users for some simple information on their businesses – such as sector and size. It will then look for metrics in 4 categories – energy use, travel, materials and water. These should be readily available from utility bills or from Finance Departments.
  5. Limitations and necessary simplifications for travel and vehicle emissions.
  6. The calculator uses the metrics input to generate an estimated carbon footprint which displays as a visual representation of where the business’s emissions are arising.
  7. The tool then generates a targeted action plan to help the business address their emissions. This plan has 17 actions – all relevant to the information input by the user. They can be filtered by “Get Started”, “Embed” and “Strategic”. Where relevant, the recommended actions links to state agency funding and advice that can help implement the actions. Users can create an account, save their action plans and share with colleagues. Actions can be marked as complete, in progress and registered users can update their metrics once they have begun to implement actions to get an estimate of their carbon savings.
  8. The SEAI Energy Academy is an free e-learning platform designed to help businesses learn about how energy is used in their business. It’s the first step for any business on their energy efficiency journey and can be accessed 24/7 at a time that suits you. We encourage CEO’s and operational managers to join the Energy Academy, but anyone can join. Some businesses have rolled-out the Energy Academy to all employees as part of a sustainability initiative. Businesses can save up to 10% on their energy use through behavioural change techniques and you can learn about these on the Energy Academy. There are 24 modules available on the Energy Academy including decarbonisation for business, energy and climate change, solar pv, and electric vehicles.
  9. The next for businesses is to create an energy action plan. The Introduction to Energy Management Training is a free trainer led workshop that helps businesses embed good energy management practices. This workshop is two 1-hour sessions during which you will develop your energy action plan. As part of this training you receive a free Energy Management Guide and Workbook. These workshops are hosted every 2-3 months and you can check out the SEAI Eventbrite page for more information and to register for the next workshop.
  10.
