SEAI Vision:
Creating a Cleaner Energy Future
Cleaner Energy Future:
Low Carbon – Sustainable, Secure, Affordable, Clean Energy
• Uses LESS energy
• Uses CLEAN energy
SEAI:
Leading the transition to Smarter and more Sustainable energy activities
What is Energy Efficiency?
Reducing the amount of energy needed to run your business
e.g. electricity, heating and finding more efficient methods of generating energy
needed for your more efficient ways of generating the energy needed
8. Energy Efficiency and Business
The average SME can reduce its energy bill by up to 30% by
implementing energy efficiency measures.
Typically, 10% saving can be achieved with little or no
capital cost.
Some investment may be required to get the remaining
20% but the payback is generally around 1.5 years for
many energy efficiency technologies.

Milks 200 cows per day on almost 250 acres
He decided to get a vacuum pump and a
milk pump system both with variable speed drives
“It’s friendlier to the environment, there is no oil in it, its
cleaner and it’s safer. It’s an investment the first day but
over four or five years it will have paid for itself and
after that it’s saving you a lot of money,” says Pat.

46. Introduction
Monasterboice Inn, Drogheda Co. Louth
Originally a coach house, Monasterboice Inn has been servicing
the road between Dublin and Belfast for over 200 years!
Cater for business functions and family occasions
Design and construction of a new 150 seat function room
and the design/upgrade of the existing restaurant building
47. Overall Aim
To design and construct a new
function room and upgrade the
existing building to deliver a new
restaurant with superior energy
efficiency whilst delivering the
required energy service to enhance
the customer comfort without
compromising customer
experience
48. Why did we do this?
• We want to do business responsibly using less fossil fuels and to
lower costs
• We realised that the stream running through our site would
need to be re- piped
• Our heating company Eurotech had the expertise to harness this
energy
• They recommended using a design-led approach to improving
energy performance alongside an EXEED consultant
49. How did we do this?
How it all began?
EXEED
Project Team
54. What else did we do?
• Smart controls were installed to manage the various
sources of heat and cooling.
• Hot air is extracted from the extractor fans and used to
heat water.
• Smart lighting used in conference and car park which is
lux level and sensor controlled
• The old gas boilers were replaced with heat pumps.
• High grade superior insulation throughout the building
• Triple-A glazed windows
55. Results
• Extended premises by 41%
• Increased turnover by 9%
• Energy costs reduced by 1.3%
• Approximate payback of 3.5 years
56. What’s next?
• Plans to build rooms in the same eco-friendly
fashion
• Our refrigeration units in the kitchen and the
bar will be cooled from the stream
• Promote the positive environmental impact of
our work with customers
