2. Smart textiles can be defined as textiles that are able to sense
and respond to changes in their environment. Smart textiles are
fabrics that have been designed and manufactured to include
technologies that provide the wearer with increased
functionality. These textiles have numerous potential
applications, such as the ability to communicate with other
devices , conduct energy transform into other materials and
protect the wearer from environmental hazards.
3. Smart textiles are usually divided by their functionality
in 3 types.
The first generation ( Passive smart textile).
Can only sense the environment.
Such type of textile contains only sensors.
The second generation ( Active smart textile).
Can sense and react to the environmental.
4. These are sensors and actuators.
These are able to detect different signals from the
environment such as temperature, light intensity,
vibrations, etc.
The third generation ( Ultra smart textile).
Can sense, react and adapt themselves to
environment.
Cognition, reasoning and activating capacities
5. Sensing:
Basically, sensing is the function of transforming
a signal into another signal that can be read which
can be a real device or a person. Textile sensor in
the form of a belt fastened around the patients chest
and record the breathing rhythm
6. Data processing is one of the components that
are required only when active processing is
necessary.
Problems need to be overcome before
imparting textile material for this function are:
fastness to washing, deformation,
interconnections, etc.
Actuation:
Actuators respond to an impulse resulting
from sensor function, possibly data processing.
7. Stortage:
Sensing, data processing , actuation,
communication, they usually need energy, mostly
electrical energy.
For efficient energy management there should be an
appropriate combination of energy supply and energy
storage capacity.
9. Sports and Human Performance.
Personalised Healthcare.
Military/security.
Fashion/lifestyle.
Conclusion: Smart textile are the most exciting
innovation in the field of textile engineering. The
development of smart textile reaches far beyond
imagination.
