OCCUPATION IN ODISHA
Occupations in Odisha is a result of various
developing Fields and areas. Some of them are:-

Odisha Steel
• Odisha Steel is an emerging sector that will supplement the industrial sphere of Odisha.
The developing industries producing steel will dominate the economy of the state. The
presence of raw materials in abundance in the region has resulted in attracting the big
investors to the region.
• In the year 2004, the government of Odisha had received 40 proposals for establishing
steel plants in Odisha. The large scale steel enterprises have opted to invest in the state
of Odisha.
• The reasons behind the sudden interest of the steel plants like TATA Steel and Ruia's
Essar Steel are the large iron ore deposits in the districts of Keojhar. The state mines 58
percent of iron ore which is an important raw material for making steel.
• Odisha has deposits of the other raw material required for the production of steel in
substantial quantities. The state also has a ready market for the steel products. Labor and
electricity in the state are cheap which account for a low cost of production. The
infrastructure of the state is also well developed that facilitates the industrial sector.
These factors have lured the reputed steel companies of the country to the state.
Odisha Education
• Odisha education comprises of the schools, colleges, universities and
technical institutes housed within the territory which provides
employment in teaching ,management , maids and skilled people.
• The schools of Odisha form an integral part of the education system of
Odisha. It provides primary and secondary education to the students of
Odisha. The colleges and universities of Odisha helps the students to opt
for higher degrees.
• Secondary education in Odisha falls under the Board of Secondary
Education. A study reveals that there were about 7,011 schools in Odisha
during 2003-04. It is evident that there were 3,556 Government High
Schools and 657 Government Aided Schools in Odisha. The research also
reveals that there was a high school in every 22.2 square kilometers.
Odisha Schools
• Odisha schools take care of the primary and secondary education of
the territory. Odisha possesses about 44,416 primary schools with 97
lakh teachers, which itself employs large amount of teachers.
• It is estimated that one can come across one primary school at every
3.5 square kilometers thus providing work to construction workers.
• In order to promote education in Odisha, the government of Odisha
has initiated Mid-day Meal Programme. The Mid-day Meal
Programme, which is operating since 1995, has largely worked
towards proliferating the education system of Odisha. It is said that
about 46.32 lakh children were brought to 51,931 schools under this
scheme. The dropout rate has also decreased in Odisha. There was a
decrease of about 1.5% in the dropout rates of 2002-03 and 2003-04.

• Odisha colleges provides facilities for higher education within the
territory. It is said that about

One can across a large number of colleges in Odisha that enables the students to
continue their higher studies within the state and also provides employment to
educators and trainers who are masters of their respective fields.

• These colleges keeps the students abreast with the latest technologies and thus
strengthen their future prospects.
Tourism
• Odisha is home to various World Heritage Sites and other monuments. There are
hundreds of temples dating from the ancient times. The Sun Temple of Konark in
Bhubaneswar and Puri is a World Heritage Site.
• Besides, there is vast seashore of 500 km that has world famous beaches where
one can enjoy water sports or simply bask in the sun.
• Chilka is a famous black water lake that is home to millions of species of birds
thus being a major tourist attraction. Dolphins are also seen here.
• Some of the major beaches here are Gopalpur, Chandipur, Puri and
Chandrabhaga. Besides that, you can also have a picnic on smaller beaches like
Aryapalli, Astaranga, Balaramgadi, Paradeep, Talasari and Ramchandi.
• The state is also known for its wonderful flora and fauna and the Royal Bengal
Tiger. The state is famous for its many wildlife sanctuaries.
Transport in Odisha
• Some of the National Highway that run though the state are NH5, NH6, NH23,
NH42 and NH43.
• There are also railways, waterways and airways in Odisha. Bhubaneswar railway
station is a major railhead in the state.
• Rail service is provides by trains like Konark, Rajdhani, Express and the
Coromondal express. Paradip is the only major port here, where import and
export take place.
• Odisha also has a domestic airport and is well connected to all major cities in the
state. Transport facilities are quite developed here. Due to the development
projects going on in the state and as the state is being recognized as a prominent
tourist destination, transport is being given greater significance and the
government is focusing on projects like international airports, etc.
Odisha Agriculture is the major contributor to the state's
economy. Agriculture is the chief occupation in Odisha.
About 76% of the total working population is engaged with
agriculture and agriculture related industries. The total
cropped area in Odisha is 87,46,000 Hectares and out of that
18,79,000 Hectares are under irrigation.
Odisha Agriculture
Odisha is one of the largest producers of rice in India. The state grows almost
one tenth of the total rice production of the country. Favorable climate and
presence of rich soils accounts for the flourishing agriculture of Odisha.

Odisha Fisheries
The Odisha Fisheries have emerged as one of the important components of the
economy of the state. With a coastline of 480 Kilometers of length, vast swamp
areas, numerous rivers and fresh water lakes, Odisha has a huge scope for
brackish water, inland and marine fisheries.
Fresh water fisheries in Odisha include 2,56,000 Hectares of reservoirs, lakes and
swamps, 1,16,000 Hectares of ponds and tanks and 1,55,000 Hectares of canals
and 1,80,000 Hectares of rivers.
Brackish or salt water fisheries in Odisha include 8,100 of backwater regions,
cultivated brinies adding up to 32,587 Hectares and 2,98,000 Hectares of
estuaries and 79,000 Hectares of Lagoons.
Odisha Industry
The Odisha Industry is going places with excellent industrial
infrastructure and presence of top national and international
companies. The state has witnessed an industrial upsurge due to
the favorable industrial atmosphere in the state. The state
government of Odisha has invited major industrial houses of the
country and abroad to invest in the state. It has achieved a
considerable amount of success and several prime companies
have set up their plants in the state.

  • 4. Odisha Steel • Odisha Steel is an emerging sector that will supplement the industrial sphere of Odisha. The developing industries producing steel will dominate the economy of the state. The presence of raw materials in abundance in the region has resulted in attracting the big investors to the region. • In the year 2004, the government of Odisha had received 40 proposals for establishing steel plants in Odisha. The large scale steel enterprises have opted to invest in the state of Odisha. • The reasons behind the sudden interest of the steel plants like TATA Steel and Ruia's Essar Steel are the large iron ore deposits in the districts of Keojhar. The state mines 58 percent of iron ore which is an important raw material for making steel. • Odisha has deposits of the other raw material required for the production of steel in substantial quantities. The state also has a ready market for the steel products. Labor and electricity in the state are cheap which account for a low cost of production. The infrastructure of the state is also well developed that facilitates the industrial sector. These factors have lured the reputed steel companies of the country to the state.

Odisha Education • Odisha education comprises of the schools, colleges, universities and technical institutes housed within the territory which provides employment in teaching ,management , maids and skilled people. • The schools of Odisha form an integral part of the education system of Odisha. It provides primary and secondary education to the students of Odisha. The colleges and universities of Odisha helps the students to opt for higher degrees. • Secondary education in Odisha falls under the Board of Secondary Education. A study reveals that there were about 7,011 schools in Odisha during 2003-04. It is evident that there were 3,556 Government High Schools and 657 Government Aided Schools in Odisha. The research also reveals that there was a high school in every 22.2 square kilometers.

Odisha possesses about 44,416 primary schools with 97 lakh teachers, which itself employs large amount of teachers. • It is estimated that one can come across one primary school at every 3.5 square kilometers thus providing work to construction workers. • In order to promote education in Odisha, the government of Odisha has initiated Mid-day Meal Programme. The Mid-day Meal Programme, which is operating since 1995, has largely worked towards proliferating the education system of Odisha. It is said that about 46.32 lakh children were brought to 51,931 schools under this scheme. The dropout rate has also decreased in Odisha. There was a decrease of about 1.5% in the dropout rates of 2002-03 and 2003-04.

  • 9. Tourism • Odisha is home to various World Heritage Sites and other monuments. There are hundreds of temples dating from the ancient times. The Sun Temple of Konark in Bhubaneswar and Puri is a World Heritage Site. • Besides, there is vast seashore of 500 km that has world famous beaches where one can enjoy water sports or simply bask in the sun. • Chilka is a famous black water lake that is home to millions of species of birds thus being a major tourist attraction. Dolphins are also seen here. • Some of the major beaches here are Gopalpur, Chandipur, Puri and Chandrabhaga. Besides that, you can also have a picnic on smaller beaches like Aryapalli, Astaranga, Balaramgadi, Paradeep, Talasari and Ramchandi. • The state is also known for its wonderful flora and fauna and the Royal Bengal Tiger. The state is famous for its many wildlife sanctuaries.
  • 10. Transport in Odisha • Some of the National Highway that run though the state are NH5, NH6, NH23, NH42 and NH43. • There are also railways, waterways and airways in Odisha. Bhubaneswar railway station is a major railhead in the state. • Rail service is provides by trains like Konark, Rajdhani, Express and the Coromondal express. Paradip is the only major port here, where import and export take place. • Odisha also has a domestic airport and is well connected to all major cities in the state. Transport facilities are quite developed here. Due to the development projects going on in the state and as the state is being recognized as a prominent tourist destination, transport is being given greater significance and the government is focusing on projects like international airports, etc.

With a coastline of 480 Kilometers of length, vast swamp areas, numerous rivers and fresh water lakes, Odisha has a huge scope for brackish water, inland and marine fisheries. Fresh water fisheries in Odisha include 2,56,000 Hectares of reservoirs, lakes and swamps, 1,16,000 Hectares of ponds and tanks and 1,55,000 Hectares of canals and 1,80,000 Hectares of rivers. Brackish or salt water fisheries in Odisha include 8,100 of backwater regions, cultivated brinies adding up to 32,587 Hectares and 2,98,000 Hectares of estuaries and 79,000 Hectares of Lagoons.
