15. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) as leader
We can see his model at three levels:
Personal Leadership
People leadership
Task leadership
16.
17. Personal Leadership
Keeping your word
Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was known as Sadiq and Amin -
credibility and reputation management in today’s language.
Bill George writer of both books of Authentic Leadership and
True North focus on this ideology.
Promises are made to keep (Treaty of Al-Hudaybiyah).
Breaking promises is worse than lies (Hudhaifa R.A).
18. Personal Leadership
Use of your time
By being self-disciplined, he was the first to arrive when
hajre Aswad issue was to be resolved.
A civil war was about to break out.
This was how the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) prevented
a war from breaking out among the Quraysh by a
supreme demonstration of wisdom.
20. People Leadership
Motivating
It was transformational, not transactional.
People worked for free and gave their lives because they
believed in his mission.
“The best among you is the one who doesn’t harm
others with his tongue and hands.”
21. People Leadership
Leading
Was a leader without title: Hajre Aswad.
Would accept dissent:
1. Hazrat Umar (RA) during Hudaibia.
2. A sahabia whom he encouraged to marry a sahabi.
22. Emotional quotient
Persistence : Never lost hope, didn’t curse the people
who tortured him in Taaif.
Didn’t keep grudges : The woman who threw trash.
Forgiving : When the mission accomplished, he forgave
all conquest of Makkah.
Gradual self –regulation : With divine guidance,
introduced values, rules in a gradual manner-one bit at a
time.
People Leadership
23. Work–family balance
No job is worth taking if you have a failed marriage, or children are
ignored.
Created a fine balance of work , family, personal prayer time.
The Prophet once heard that one of his companions was fasting
everyday and spending all night in prayer. The Prophet made a
point to go visit him and advise him not to do this. Here’s what he
told him: “…I have been told that you stand all night (in prayer) and
fast all day.’ I said: ‘Yes (I do).’ He said: ‘Do not do that. Sleep and
stand (in prayer); fast and break your fast.

24. Task Leadership
Problem solving
The captives of Badr were asked to educate
children of Madina in exchange of getting
freedom from captivity.
Everyone in Madina, wanted to be the host of
Prophet S.A.W, when he reached but in order to
resolve the issue, the Prophet(S.A.W) left his
decision to his camel(Qiswa).
25. Task Leadership
Consultative decision making.
The trench was dug on the advice of Hazrat
Salman Farsi similarly at Badar, the Prophet
pitched the tents of Muslims army at lower side
so Hazrat Saad bin Moaz chose a better place
which was already known to him.
26. Task Leadership
Consultative decision making.
The spouse of Prophet(Umme Salma) on the
occasion of Hudaibia, proposed the Prophet to
offer sacrifice, shave his head and free himself
of Ahram.
27. Task Leadership
Allocating Work
He only had 23 years to develop a team which will
spread Islam in all parts of the world.
Strengths-based assigning : he picked what the best in
people, created the best job-person fit. Selected Moaz
Bin Jabal as the Governor of Yaman.
28. Task Leadership
Delegating
Hijrat : Ali (RA) to stay back, Abu Bakr (RA) to
accompany.
Appoint for potential : Ali (RA) for khaibar expedition.
29. Task Leadership
Appraising
After 10 years of serving him, Anas (RA) said : no
penalizing after a mistake was made.
This reminds us of getting rid of today’s performance
appraisal system which only works to highlight gaps.
